Solved.  Essentially, you need to set up and mount the usb file system 
and set the right permissions.  I've written a note about how to do this 
derived from various HowTos, and will post it if anyone's interested.

I'm now able to update my TomTom Go in virtual WinXP.  Phew.  (Pain in 
the proverbial, seeing as the Go runs on GNU/linux but TomTom only 
offers a Win-based updater. :-(   )

Sadly, seamless mode doesn't seem to work - although I can still see the 
WinXP task bar, the main window itself is reduced to a narrow strip 
across the lower part of the screen.  I wonder if this is a problem with 
the way the graphics card (an ATI Radeon) is handled?

More importantly, the USB handling is not operational, despite applying 
the fix given in the FAQ on Sun's VB site.  Any ideas, anyone?

Otherwise, I'm very impressed with VB.

Don't forget to try out seamless mode as well - windows key + L - set the
windows task bar to autohide as well as you'd be fooled into thinking all
the windows progs were running native

(Folk here who've used virtualisation for ages may have forgotten the 
sheer gleeful delight you get the first time you see WinXP running 
inside a window on your Ubuntu box. :-)  )

WinXP has now done its updates.  I've got Guest Additions installed; 
and I've also activated the usb (disabled in Gutsy) as per 
http://virtualbox.org/wiki/User_FAQ (section labelled USB on 
Ubuntu/Gutsy).  Now to install some antivirus and a firewall.  Then good 
to go on the two apps I have to use Windoze for.  (Am I imagining it, or 
does WinXP actually run *faster* in VirtualBox than I remember it doing 
on the PC?)

I have added Radio 1 and 2 to Rhythmbox quite easily. The address for 
the Radio 2 feed is mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio2/ just add that 
as a radio station and it should play fine.

I noticed this but it's only really ideal if we can launch a station
(e.g. Radio 2) from a launcher and play it in a media player on our
desktop. Everything else I listen to in Rythmbox (as controlled by a
Cairo Dock applet). If listening to the BBC Radio Stations could be
integrated to this then I would tune into Radio 2.

As it stands I don't think it can easily be done which means BBC Radio
2 don't have me as a listener. I think similar applies to a lot of
FOSS users.

It might be worth upgrading to the newest kernel in Hardy which is 2.6.24-19

Aha, there's the problem, virtualbox-ose-module-generic will have
installed -19.  You can install the right kernel number manually, it
should be, virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.24-18-generic and uninstall the
-19 kernel modules. If using Synaptic, I would do a "mark for complete
removal"

When I try to start a virtual machine I get the message headed Failed to
start virtual machine br. Underneath the heading it starts VirtualBox
kernel not installed. 

Using Synaptic I installed virtualbox-ose-module-generic but this made
no difference. Could it be because the kernel on my laptop is 2.6.24-18
generic?

Cheers Mac, no worries, glad that you got it running.  need to track
down who looks after the VB repos and see why the kernel modules have
not been updated to the new kernel version in Gutsy :-)

Quick word of advice, when you have your virtual windows installed,
install the guest additions (found in Devices ->Install Guest
Additions) as this will give you improved video driver functionality
(the windows display resolution will adjust to your window size) and
the ability to run "seamless mode".

I have given up trying to get VirtualBox working. I am not as
knowledgeable as many of you but I think the problem lies in the kernel
and it is beyond me. It seems to me that VMware is well worth having a
serious look at, there is a 30 day free trial available.

It should work in Hardy without too much trouble, don't forget you can
also try the binaries directly from Sun (free as in beer)

Reading around this topic, it seemed that there is a packaging problem; 
  but I don't know enough to see whether that's the issue above, or 
whether I've done something that caused this build to fail.

Anyway, I've just tried to 'purge' my previous attempts, and had another 
go with

sudo aptitude install virtualbox-ose virtualbox-ose-modules-generic

But towards the end of the installation I still get

Setting up virtualbox-ose-modules-2.6.22-14-generic (6) ...
  * Starting VirtualBox kernel module vboxdrv  FATAL: Module vboxdrv not 
found.
  * Modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why.


Given the trouble I'm having installing virtualbox on this machine (and 
potential issues about USB and networking), I'm going to research this a 
bit more, and either try setting up virtualbox on my Hardy machine, or 
checking out the VMware alternative.

I agree, Alan.

My first distro was actually Lycoris (formerly Redmond Linux) which
was one of the first attempts to make a "Windows-esque distro"... soon
my near neighbour Martin "Santa Claus" Wheeler was on my doorstep with
a SuSE box set which he sold me for £15, siting that the manuals were
worth that alone.  Never really liked SuSE much and eventually settled
for Red Hat 9.

Had never managed to get certain things working, though, and that used
to really bug me.  One day at a LUG meeting somebody brought along a
copy of Warty Warthog and we tried installing on my laptop -
remarkably everything worked out of the box, which blew me away!  I
also discovered I preferred Gnome to KDE and have never looked back.
