having exactly the same problem here - requires fast fingers! either using the physical button on the drive or "ejecting" on the icon has the same effect - disk comes out and shoots straight back in again - comedy dvd drives! :\ Pete Check out the blog @ http://thelondoneer.blogspot.com -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

In reply to multiple posts... 1. I use the dvd drive allot, I view/burn many dvd's and if it is going to re-insert it on eject then not on. 2. I still have another 2 machines running with 8.04 (xbuntu) and 8.10 (with some issues) but this is my main pc and the issues I have had since upgrading on Thursday/Friday mean that I need a more stable OS. So far today I have tried (via live cd's) another 7 distro's and at the moment I have installed a x86 version of Mint (another 'buntu off shoot) , one of the main reasons for dropping x64 version was when ever I wanted to install something not in the repo's I HAD to compile it and usually there were issues, at least with the x86 version I have a chance to find a .deb file, or the compilation will succeed. (I have no problems with compiling the s/w but when there is cast issues I don't have the patience to fix them anymore. When I started coding 30 years ago this wasn't a problem ;-) but I haven't really done any programming in the past 8 years.) As a developer I believe that the beta testing is for getting rid of issues like this, One of the reasons I left M$ OS's behind was the issues in Vi$ta, after spending 10 years supporting M$ os's I had enough when I would switch on the pc and not have any networking... I then switched to Ubuntu and have mostly been pleased with it since then. 3. the screen saver issue, I don't know what is causing it, I have disabled the SS and so far it is behaving, the video card on that pc is the intel 915 onboard (so far my only pc running 8.10) I may come back in a month or so and see if the issues have been fixed. As to reading the release notes, who these days RTFM's? K -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] more issues with 8.10
Am I the only one who is quick enough to remove the CD befor the tray closes? Or perhaps my DVD drive is a sjuggish mover! My classification for this bug is 'irritating'. The importance of fixing bugs like this quickly is to protect Ubuntu's reputation. Thank you. The fact that some people use their optical drive whilst others rarely touches it shows me that it's by no means a release critical bug. If it was a crucial component like the CPU didnt work under Ubuntu then yes, I'd class that as critical. However the fact is that a) it's in the upgrade release notes, which links to the bug, b) the bug not only describes a workaround but a solution so c) there is a more effective solution that described in the release notes. Take a moment to read the entire bug report and comments and you will see that this is much less of an issue that people are making out. I'm not arguing that the CD isnt an essential item or that it doesnt matter that it doesnt work, but the fact that it _does_ work, and it _is_ possible to work around this issue. Hello Alan, Alan Pope wrote: > I'm quite staggered that you think an entire OS release should be > delayed for this! I personally use my CDROM drive once in a blue moon. A lot of people still use optical media on a regular basis, for example I use it to make inexpensive off-site backups of my Ubuntu system and watch DVDs on my computer and laptop. The optical disc drive is also almost essential if you want to encourage widespread prorogation of Ubuntu as it also enables proprietary software manufacturers (such as game developers) to sell there products for the Linux platform in shops and reach a large audience - without the optical disc drive the only effective distribution medium for software companies is via the internet which does not yet reach a large enough proportion of average consumers to make it sufficiently profitable. Re: [ubuntu-uk] more issues with 8.10
Just to build upon Alan's note about adding yourself to an existing bug, in a recent Ubuntu news the Launchpad guys had introduced a new "Me Too" tab to enable developers to gauge the quantity of users affected, without having to wade through lots of me too type notes. Obviously if you wish to add further detail to an existing bug, you would still need to follow the normal process. To be honest, I'm going to be sitting with the Heron for a little while yet as from Mark Shuttleworth's original description of where he wanted Ubuntu to go, lots of new things were going to be added to this release, especially as it's also a catch up release after the LTS Heron, so I was kinda expecting a number of naughty things happening from initial release! Re: [ubuntu-uk] more issues with 8.10
Hi, I am having problems with the installation of 8.10 as well. I installed it yesterday onto my laptop and as soon as the desktop appears it crashes. I cant get it to work at all. Is this something to do with my laptop, if so, will it work on my laptop, if not how do I revert back to 8.04? Thank you for your help. Hardy is robust and only six months old, which, by the release cycle standards of some distributions and operating systems, is positively bleeding edge. If you find the inevitable bug-squashing and glitch-hunting that occurs post new releases to be tiresome, you can just stay with the previous release for 6-8 weeks or so, until the most irksome issues are dealt with by the updates. Some people enjoy life on the bleeding edge, others need more stability. The previous release is always there to cater for the latter ;) Roger -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] more issues with 8.10
Sorry to hear you are having problems... but the the great thing about linux world is that you can just "try another disctro". In fact I would encourage everybody to play around with other distro's too, even if your ubuntu installation is working fine! [ubuntu-uk] more issues with 8.10
Since I installed 8.10 64bit as a fresh install, when I eject a cd (using right click eject) it immediately closed it again before I have time to remove the cd. Due to the high number of issues I am going to be removing it and trying a different distro. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
