*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 41301 ***

I have the same problem I get constant messages in /var/log/messages

How I have managed to deal with it is to make sure I open a terminal window on
one of my desktops and just unloading and reloading the driver, which get's
everything working right again. It's a lot better then reloading X or
rebooting. It happens mostly in
Firefox, but I have noticed it in other apps as well. It would be nice if there
was an update from ubuntu since there seems to be a lot of people having the
same problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 286001] Re: [g45] Wishlist: Use native resolution of both monitors by default for login screen in dual-head setup

2009-08-11 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
The upstream bug report for the lid issue is
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11455 . From what I
remember the reason that this is not trivial to fix is that the methods
they have used to detect the lid status is unreliable on some computers.
This could result in the internal LVDS display being disabled even when
it shouldn't be.

Since the lid issue is being worked on upstream already, I suggest we
focus on the issue that the resolution is set to the lowest common
denominator (and sometimes even lower, see bug 404919) here. That is why
I have changed the title of this bug report and set the priority to
Wishlist; this is more likely a feature that we want to change than a
real bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379423] [NEW] Dual screen not working with Ubuntu 9.04 and intel 4500 MHD (on HP 6730B laptop)

2009-08-11 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello,
I'm using an up-to-date Ubuntu 9.04 on a HP 6730B laptop, together with a HP
docking station.
The video card is a intel 4500 MHD.
When I plug a second screen (Acer AL2223W), it is well detected (brand and
model).

Mirrored screen is working well but if I want to work with an extended
display, I have to log out and log in (which is boring because Plug in
and out of my docking station many times a day) to have the new
configuration take into account but the main problem is that the
external screen is not refreshed.

If I move a window, I can see like if there were hundreds of windows...

I really want to leave Microsoft for Ubuntu but I NEED an external
screen...

Thank you very much for your help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 405896] Re: [gm45] 3D image image ghosting

2009-08-11 Thread GreyGeek
Another anomoly has appeared on my SecondLife screen.

Also, a sold black line about 1/2 wide at about 3/4 from the right
margin of my 100X900 display, began appearing. First it was light grey
and somewhat transparent, but eventually it got solid black. Strangely,
other objects could appear on top of it and they would cover it. Other
3D accelerated programs, like Stellarium, do not exhibit that black
line. Only SecondLife.

Xorg.log (via dmesg) gave the following:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 316481] Re: Switching user twice causes hang

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

Switching user once, by either fast user switching or using the 'Switch
User' option in the standard Shutdown window, works OK for logging into
a second user. However, returning to the first user (by either fast user
switching or using the 'Switch User' option in the standard Shutdown
window) causes the system to hang with a blank screen. This also occurs
if the option to do Shutdown is selected when logged into the second
  user.

The above bug only applies to laptops i.e. it's OK on desktops. The bug
was on Gutsy and is still on Hardy 8.04.1 fully up to date.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399027] Re: xorg memory consumption

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 9.04
  Release: 9.04

Xorg memory consumption grows continuously with firefox usage. However,
after closing firefox xorg consumption is not decreased. A new firefox
instance will grow xorg memory usage further. Closing it again does not
reduce xorg memory usage. Eventually all free memory is used and it
  will start to swap.

The setup that shows this behavior has dual monitors and is using the
fglrx driver. My other setup does not have this issue with similar
  usage but only 1 monitor.

  Current usage is

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394779] Re: [Karmic] No window border and keyboard input after installing fglrx 8.620

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

As in the summary I got several problems after installing fglrx drivers
8.620 from karmic repo and test my Radeon 4850. After rebooting the
  desktop shows correctly but:

  * all windows haven't borders.

  * it is impossible to open more than one application at a time, it
occupies all the desktop (panel included); hitting crtl+f1 pops kickoff
but is useless with mouse or keyboard; krunner pops in front but quickly
goes behind the application. ctrl+f3 and ctrl+f4 not work. I can close
application only from File menu (if any, see System Settings)

  * all kde text fields aren't editable; gtk applications yes (firefox,
openoffice). The only kde application whose search text field is
  editable is KPackageKit (?!).

  * if I switch in a terminal with ctrl+alt+f1 I can't login since in my
user password there is a @ and AltGr not works.

  I've switched back to xserver-xorg-video-radeon.

I'm using last kernel, 2.6.31-1-generic, in karmic 64bit full upgraded.

  Some logs/file below.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 389333] Re: [Mobility Radeon HD 3450][EEE 1000HV] fglrx does not work (EE Invalid Video Bios Signature)

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  hello there

i'm not sure if it is correct to file this issue, because i have found
similiar bugs in launchpad:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/355495
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/346028

but still, i get a different error message...

  but everything in order:
i own an EEE 1000HV, similar built to the 1000HE, but with a dedicated
Mobility Radeon HD 3450
i installed 9.04 with a live cd and updated the system
after that i went to the hardwaremanager and it showed me one possible
proprietary driver for my graphics card
i installed it, rebootet - and crashed! the only thing i got to see was at
first a flashing prompt shell which soon after changed into a green line on
top of the display...or sometimes into a double blurred green ubuntu logo

when i look into the Xorg.0.log (attached) then i find the Error EE Invalid
Video Bios Signature
normally this would meen that my graphics card is not supported, right? but i
know people using e.g. a Dell Studio 1537 with exact the same card and they
can use the fglrx (or even launchpad users:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/358064)

i've tried to install the fglrx by:
  hardware manager
  synaptic
  shell prompt
  envyng
ati catalyst 9.5 + 9.6 (installer as well as manually with craeting packages)

is it a ubuntu issue? or an amd issue? or is it a netbook issue? or even
  a OEM issue?

if you need any further logs or anything, please tell me
  cheers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352741] Re: Jerky DVD playback with desktop effects enabled in Jaunty using fglrx

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I've updated Jaunty today and thought I'd try playing a DVD. My laptop
uses an ATI Radeon HD3200 chipset and the video playback is choppy and
uses high CPU. Also, maximising the window or switching to full screen
in Totem causes X to crash.

If I disable Desktop effects, the playback quality is acceptable. I've
attached the output of lspci -vvnn which I hope helps to get this
  resolved.

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the
original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to
reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against
the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 388240] Re: real player 10 consistently segmentation faults in Jaunty

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: libx11-6

I have two machines -- current one Pentum dual core and another atom
  based netbook running eeebuntu.

On BOTH machines Realplayer 10 started crashing right after I
upgraded to Jaunty. On one machine I upgraded from whithin ubuntu
(using the gui). On the other one it is a totall new install from CD.
My point is -- the bugs looks like it is independent of how upgrade was
  made and the processor.

Now I have a subscription service that needs me to use Realplayer 10.
Realplayer 11 works just fine. Only realplayer 10 has this issue. I
  got he player from

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396046] Re: Using xfix in restore modus, kills the grapic on ATI system

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Description:Ubuntu 9.04
  Release:9.04
  AMD/ATI radeon 3460 AMD/ATI radeon 2xxx

Using xfix in restore modus leaves the computer unable to use xorg at
  all.

This is what is suppose to happen: Xorg capabel of running with about no
3D acceleration, by dragging in vesa or something else.

  This is what happens:
It skullbashes the config, by using generic output all over the place. Which
screws over the grapics.
Which results in hal being ankward along with a crash of the computer that
its done on when attempting to start xorg. However, this only applies to the
computer, ssh and about every other way of remote controlling still works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402206] Re: DetectableAutoRepeat is broken

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

XkbSetDetectableAutoRepeat doesn't have any effect; when autorepeating,
keys are still sending both KeyPress and KeyRelease messages, even
though with DetectableAutoRepeat set they should only keep sending
  KeyPress events.

This bug affects at least windows programs running under Wine that need
to ignore autorepeat, such as World of Warcraft.

There are two open bugs under bugs.freedesktop.org

  http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22515) about

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399821] Re: [i845] karmic fails to initialise display on boot. 2.6.31-3 + drm + Intel 845G

2009-08-11 Thread Twig
Hi,

Just to clarify: The mainline kernel works fine. I can test the latest
mainline but it won't be for a day or so.

None of the Ubuntu kernels work since rc2. All patches which I've
applied have been to the Ubuntu kernel source (by downloading the linux-
source package). I hope this is the right way of doing this.

I've tried the patch I mentioned and also those suggested on upstream
bug 22980 at comment #7 (although I'm not sure how to apply the third
patch as it doesn't seem to be a patch to the kernel source code).

All kernels boot correctly if I pass the nomodeset parameter.

Thanks,
Twig.

Hi Bryce,
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code.  ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/.  If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system.  Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this
 testing.

Sorry for not replying before. The problem is that my CD/DVD writer
has gone kaput. If you promise to take this issue upstream and
hopefully get them to support it, then will invest in the CD/DVD
writer for the i845G box and test the karmic image 4 which will be
there most probably by the week-end.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 197639] Re: [fglrx] xv output not available for video playback

2009-08-11 Thread prash_n_rao
Waldeck's method works for me too. Video does not flicker for me now.
There is a bit of tearing now and then, though -- in both, windowed and
full-screen mode. CPU usage remains high too - about 30% for mplayer. I
guess this is what makes the video freeze for a moment when I am
switching applications or starting new ones.

called out in the PCI ID files in /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 254908] Re: [HD 3470] Installation Problem

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

I've Asus M51Se240DV notebook which uses ATI Radeon Mobilitiy HD 3470
Graphic card and 3GB DDR2 RAM. In both of installations, 64bit and
32bit, it gives an error and drops to console. It cannot start X server.
I couldn't remember all of the error message, but it is about X server.
The graphic card cannot be identified by the X server. I've tried to
change Driver option to mesa and ati but it again doesn't work. Also,
I've tried installation with alternate cd, however, it cannot start
after the installation and dropped to console. I've googled internet,
but i couldn't find anything working.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399821] Re: [i845] karmic fails to initialise display on boot. 2.6.31-3 + drm + Intel 845G

2009-08-11 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Thanks Twig. Based on your information, if the mainline kernels are
working fine it would seem this is an Ubuntu specific regression that
was introduced. Thus, applying any patches to the Ubuntu kernel won't
likely help. Let's try and narrow down the Ubuntu specific patch that
introduced this issue. First, if you can boot back into the 2.6.31-2
Ubuntu kernel which works fine, I need you to look up and tell me the
specific Ubuntu kernel version being used. You can find this by doing:

cat /proc/version_signature

Likewise if you can boot into the 2.6.31-3 Ubuntu kernel which fails and
again look up and tell me the specific Ubuntu kernel version being used
that would be great. That will at least provide the specific window of
patches which introduced this issue. We can then work on narrowing down
the specific patch.

Below is just a list of all Ubuntu specific patches between 2.6.31-2.15
and 2.6.31-3.19:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393129] Re: Corrupt screen, HP Brio, Matrox G100 (display: NEC LCD1860NX and others)

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-mga

Corrupt screen, HP Brio, Matrox G100 (display: NEC LCD1860NX and others)

HP Brio, Celeron 300MHz with 256Mb ram
  On board Matrox G100 2Mb
NEC LCD1860NX flat screen (native resolution 1280x1024)

[update] When I filed this originally I reported 8Mb video (possibly as a
result of
reading HP Brio reviews), but I now believe it to be 2Mb.

I have also tried a CRT display and had identical symptoms,
so I doubt this problem is specific for this screen.

The attached photo shows the display on first booting after
installing Ubuntu 9.04. It looks similar to a TV that's
lost the horizontal hold, and is also displaced a little to
the right and down. Although some features can be made out,
the content is shown as if 3 copies are overlaid in vertical
  stripes.

The next attached photo shows this more clearly, taken after
logging in blind. Note how, in the top panel, the time is
  visible in 3 places.

I found that Puppy and Mepix do not exhibit this problem.
The next experiment was to take the xorg.conf generated by
the Puppy wizard and reduce it to the following, replacing
  the empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf with:

  EndSection
   end of xorg.conf

This still did not fix the display. Neither did changing
  /etc/gdm/gdm.conf GdmXserverTimeout=10 to 25 (following
advice in bug #319363). But making both changes gave a
  good 1024x768 display.

I downloaded an iso of Karmic alpha2 and installed this.
The symptoms were identical. However, now the change of
GdmXserverTimeout=10 isn't needed, though the change of
  xorg.conf still is.

The G100 2Mb should be able to produce 1280x1024 resolution
with 8-bit colour. Since this is the native resolution of the NEC
display, this is what I would prefer.

I'm happy to run any tests, and do complete reinstalls of any
distro. I also have various other displays available that I
  could try.

Though due to other commitments it may take several days for
  me to respond.

I have dumps of the /etc and /var/log trees from most of these
experiments; they're rather large, so you may prefer to ask for
  specific files.

In case you're wondering, no, the Brio isn't my regular desktop.
But it's a nice compact little box to take along to LUG meets.
Such machines are often discarded these days, yet are adequate
for disadvantaged people wanting very basic facilities. This
is likely to be their first exposure to Linux, so it's important
that Ubuntu works for them without intervention.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 365943] Re: Mouse cursor jumps when two fingers are used

2009-08-11 Thread nh2
0.99.3-2ubuntu5 (it is in the X Updates PPA and Karmic, right?) causes
the same problems as stated in #4 on a Samsung NC10 and a Dell Latitude
2100. Both touchpads become almost unusable as when moving the finger
faster than snail speed, the cursor just stops moving and continues only
in small jumps, as if it had hung up somewhere.

A note: That two-finger-hopping is what I would have expected to happen
- most notebooks I've used running Windows Synaptic drivers do behave
exactly like this. I never knew it was a bug ;-)

If there is a patch to make the pad working again, I'll be glad to test
it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387929] Re: no mobility powerset

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd

Hi I have this problem, I have an asus F3jp with Ati Radeon Mobility x1700.
  I install ubuntu 9.04, but I can't install catalyst 9.3 cause xorg1.6 work
only with catalyst 9.4.

Catalyst 9.4 is only for now HD video card and so don't support my video
  card.

There isn't problem with GUI or Compiz, RadeonHD open drive don't have
powerset! so my video card work full power always!
This make my battery life short and make my laptop very noisy (cause full
speed fan) and HOT!! VERY HOT!.

Anybody know how set the power of my video card low? I don't need all
video card power. For youtube and some film i think minimum power is
  enought!

  On ati driver was powerset...

  Sorry my English!

2009-08-11 Thread Dominik
This doesn't work in Jaunty for me. The key commands works in the system
console.
System informations placed in bug 412097. I use a Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook.

xev output of pressing alt + prnt (sys-rq):

KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x401,
root 0xab, subw 0x0, time 4840031, (160,113), root:(167,166),
state 0x0, keycode 64 (keysym 0xffe9, Alt_L), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x401,

How can I do the workaround (using another interface)?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397420] Re: jaunty, xserver crash on startup, toshiba tecra m1

2009-08-11 Thread Hanns Fuerniss
I didn't try 9.10 alpha3 yet, but with kernel update to 2.6.28-14.47 it works
mostly, means, while booting nearly 95% of the cases the kdm-login (x-server)
starts Korrektly. only sometimes the message you're running in low graphics
mode and ... appears. Then I solve the problem by choosing console login in
the click-box - and after some magical seconds while typing my login (on tty2)
... appears the kdm-login and everything seems normal. weired but working. I
would set this to 95% solved if possible :-)
It does not seem to be an xorg-server-problem. wrong package I think. (still
hal is my suspect)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412169] Re: Easystroke doesn't like Up or Down

2009-08-11 Thread Tom Jaeger
This is a known bug in xserver-1.6. Since it's unlikely to be fixed
upstream, I've added a workaround to easystroke (commit
50e3ed900f41af0468d981d7d5075abe489eb509), so we'll need to update
easystroke in karmic to 0.4.7. You can install it from the easystroke

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 287428] Re: Menu key emits XF86WakeUp on Thinkpad X61s

2009-08-11 Thread thedward
It appears that it is a hotkey-setup problem. If I comment out
the following line from /usr/share/hotkey-setup/ibm.hk then my
menu key works as expected:

setkeycodes e05d$KEY_WAKEUP # Fn-click (Press release with
no action), observed on R52

This setting is presumably useful for folks on some models, so
simply commenting it out by default is likely not the correct
solution.

I can promise to take the bug upstream, but can't give promises that
upstream will give it attention; they seem to give less priority on 8xx
issues.

But note that it is also possible to create a USB LiveCD on a USB key.
I don't have the directions at hand but they should be googleable.

Sorry for not replying before. The problem is that my CD/DVD writer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411542] Re: OpenOffice.org 3.1 Impress Very Slow

2009-08-11 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Jono,

Hmm, to treat this as an Xorg performance bug, we need some more
specific data to go on, although I'm not sure what performance data can
be gathered from openoffice. My vague guess would be that this is some
intermediate library between openoffice and X (cairo??). But maybe we
can just push it upstream and see what they suggest.

But to start with can you please run 'apport-collect 411542', which will
attach the various data we need for X.org bug reports?

Also, are you able to reproduce this bug in any other applications
besides openoffice? That might help in identifying the cause if it is a
shared library or something.

2009-08-11 Thread Alberto Milone
@nh2

Please follow these steps so that I can see what's happening:

1. Enable the universe repository and refresh your packages list.

2. Download and install the deb package of synaptics-report (which
works on hardy, jaunty and karmic) from this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~albertomilone/+archive/ppa

3. Press CTRL-ALT-F1 to go to the 1st terminal (you'll see only the
command line) and log in.

4. Type the following command:

sudo synaptics-report

and follow the instructions which the program will give you.

5. Press ALT-F7 to go back to your desktop environment

6. Look for the synaptics_report.log file in the same directory in which
you executed the synaptics-report command (usually your home directory)
and attach the file.
