[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1074250] [NEW] nvidia-current 295.40-0ubuntu1: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build
Public bug reported: This is a resppnse to a second of two crash report popups I encountered on starting Lubuntu after several months. I don't know if it's a duplicate of the first. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1074249] [NEW] nvidia-current 295.40-0ubuntu1: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build
Public bug reported: I started this version of Lubuntu for the first time in several months. I guess the nvidia driver tried to update itself (without my say-so) and failed. Update Manager is concurrently informing me there's a system upgrade to Quantal Quetzal available. I plan to try the upgrade after I file this report. I'm a relative noob, just having fun, but I hope this helps. I'm assuming the "crash report" popup info will automatically attach itself to this? [Ubuntu-x-swat] Fwd: Intel/ATI hybrid systems bug
Hi, There is currently a bug on hubrid intel/ati systems in quantal, making fglrx drivers unusable for these systems. You can find the details in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer-updates/+bug/1068404 The problem seems to be coming from a regression in the intel driver and a workaround is to revert the culpit patch, as described in the comment #44 of the bug report. Could someone please review my patch (you can use directly my PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/ppa/+packages?field.name_filter=&field.status_filter=published&field.series_filter=quantal Moreover, there is another bug in the 10fglrx file of the fglrx ubuntu package that breaks switching to the igpu. A fix for that is also included in my PPA (in both fglrx packages). I am not sure if this is the appropriate lists for any/both bugs, so please let me know if I should contact others for that. Public bug reported: In the system settings 'Brightnes and Lock' I have the screen swith set to 'never' and the screen shuts off at 10 minutes. I don't know how to fix the problem. Nick, you were right. I figured out that I was probabily forgetting to unload the fglrx module after changing it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071050] Re: Dell Precision M6500 with NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M crashes when using OpenGL screensaver

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1074063] [NEW] Very slow composition with ATI 9100 IGP and Quantal
Public bug reported: After a clean Quantal installation in a Toshiba A75-S229 notebook, Unity runs VERY VERY slow, including several seconds to just draw a warning box or the shutdown box. CPU burns-out to 100% (And the multithread secondary cpu got overloaded too). Any DM that uses Composition show this issue. Tested with Cinnamon. Cinnamon2d just dont run and keep as Cinnamon 3D. A workarround (Not well a workarround but a "Way to survive") is run Cinnamon and in a gnome-terminal run "metacity --replace&", but this kill Every window management, forcing me to use the terminal to launch applications. Tryed Quantal version of Xorg and now testing without success xorg- edgers versions. The fglrx driver existent in ppas and oficial repo dont support this board, since the last catalyst driver supporting it v8. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal
Well, that is interesting on several fronts. The new driver does what I need, so I will stick with it. I am retired and not much of a computer user. People using development suites may have trouble, and this is, as far as I am concerned, an ongoing problem with the driver which, all things being equal, will sort itself out in the future. @madbiologist: Fair winds and following seas. I have been out of the development world for twenty-odd years now, and am completely out of touch with the inner workings. Getting a driver working with mesa must be quite a challenge. The last time I was involved in writing drivers was in the 1960's for mechanical things like paper tape readers, printers and document handlers. It was nice to be able to go and poke the hardware. When you get done with this, if ever, you will most certainly have an article for the journals (Does Software Practive and Experience still publish?). Keep up the good work, and try not to damage what we have so far. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040 Title: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1058040/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Hi, I have the same bug (complete freeze, no mouse & no keyboard after a few seconds, no ssh, automatic reboot sometimes 2 or 3 minutes later) and here are some details which might help. First my configuration (it's a desktop computer): Processor: i3 Board: Asus P7P55D Graphics: Nvidia GT940 Ram: 6GB Sound: external card Audio Kontrol There is a dual boot with windows on two different HD. I tried to install one after another Linux Mint, Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu Studio (for several different reasons), and here are some remarks about all this: - Things are much worse with Mint (because of cinnamon? Or because of the version of the kernel? gnome-shell under Mint was better at least). Even the live Usb froze several times. - Things are worse with gnome shell than with xfce or gnome 2. - I am now under Ubuntu 12.10 again, with Unity, and I discovered that JACK was one of the major problem (I tried to install Ardour & Co). Especially, during the installation of Jack when the system asks if you want to "enable the real time" (can't remember the exact message), choosing 'yes' is a really a bad idea, it can make the system freeze instantly. Now that I have said "no", things are much better overall. - Problems are arising usually when something is involved with the sound, with the graphics, or with the disks (partition of the disk, importing a big folder in rhythmbox...) Something seems wrong with drivers anyway... I'll try to use the internal sound card instead, and perform other tests with cinnamon and gnome-shell to see, but the major problem is that there is not a standard procedure to make the system freeze, as other people pointed out. I hope it helped, G On Thu, 01 Nov 2012 01:16:49 - Christopher James Leaf wrote: > It seems that an upgrade to 12.10 worked for me, because it >has the new > kernel 3.5. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073933] [NEW] Xorg is tremendously unstable
Public bug reported: Xorg crashes far too easily. Just now it crashed while running "disper -s" (as a command shortcut). This is not systematic. Often I run "disper -s" or -S without xorg crashing. Other times xorg crashed without doing anything particular. I experience more than a couple of xorg crashes a week, this is unbelievable. Linux is known for its supposed stability. This should be on of the topmost priorities in Ubuntu (and any linux distribution). A xorg crash is a DISASTER, one can loose hours of work. Xorg must be rock-solid. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal
No to be a downer, but my experience with the open source is so poor that it is close to unusable for me. I work with eclipse and I keep on loosing the window, at first I tought eclipse was crashing but all processes were there, is just the windows that were gone from the desktop. Unity is really really slow, windows managment is also slow to move, close and resize. In other terms, it is worth going back 12.04 rather that staying with this open source driver. I didn't even try any 3d game as the performance is so bad I am not even willing to see it go worse.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal
@John Winterton - You are half right. CPU overhead is higher with the open-source radeon driver than with the closed-source Catalyst (fglrx) driver. However the ATI/AMD GPU is used as much more than just a presentation device - most of the 3D calculations and rendering (including parts of Ubuntu's Unity desktop) are done on the GPU. Most of the excess heat produced by the radeon driver compared to the fglrx driver is produced by the GPU. Although there is some basic power management in the radeon driver - see http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo#radeon-KMS_power-management - not only does the dynpm method not work on some hardware, when it does both it and the profile method only reduce heat and increase battery life partially when compared to the fglrx driver. That said, there is some work going on to reduce the CPU overhead of the radeon driver. Some improvements were made in Mesa 7.11 (used in Ubuntu 11.10) for both the r300g driver for old hardware up to and including the Radeon X1000 series GPUs and the r600g driver for newer hardware from Radeon HD2000 series and later. There was at least one improvement to the r600g driver in Mesa 9.0 (used in Ubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal") - see http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=c76462b45f1e3a0aa2ee7971191e30e8a5f52015 - and already another in the development tree for the future Mesa 9.1 - see http://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/commit/?id=e73bf3b805de78299f1a652668ba4e6eab9bac94 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1058040 Title: fglrx-installer not working with HD2000-4000 "legacy" cards in Quantal To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/1058040/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073724] Re: Pointer barriers have gaps along the edge of the screen
** Description changed: - I have a multiple monitor setup and the pointer barriers seem to have a - small (~1px) gap at the edge of the screen. For example in gnome-shell, - the panel has barriers on either end, If I move the mouse towards the - hot corner (top-right corner of screen) it inevitably just slips over - the top of the barrier and onto the next monitor. + [Impact] + On a multiple monitor setup there is a small gap above the pointer barriers, that allows the mouse to slide through past the barrier, via the edge of the screen. + + This a particular issue on gnome-shell, since the pointer barriers are + used to trap the pointer inside the panel/tray when activating hot- + corners. + + [TESTCASE] + 1. run gnome-shell with atleast 2 montiors in horizontal configuration, 2nd monitor to the right of the primary + 2. move mouse towards top-right corner of primary monitor. + + Pointer should get trapped in the corner of the primary monitor, however + it will actually just side over the top of the barrier. + + With fix in the attached branch, the pointer is correctly trapped. + + [Regression Pontential] + Should be minimal, I have tested under gnome-shell and unity and all hot-corners/sticky edges appear to be working correctly. + + + === Original Bug Report == + I have a multiple monitor setup and the pointer barriers seem to have a small (~1px) gap at the edge of the screen. For example in gnome-shell, the panel has barriers on either end, If I move the mouse towards the hot corner (top-right corner of screen) it inevitably just slips over the top of the barrier and onto the next monitor. This bug introduced by the '500_pointer_barrier_thresholds.diff' patch. I have rebuilt the xserver without this patch, and the barriers behave as expected blocking/trapping the mouser pointer in the top corner of the screen. - ProblemType: Bug - DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 + ProblemType: BugDistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.10 Package: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.13.0-0ubuntu6 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.5.0-18.29-generic 3.5.7 Uname: Linux 3.5.0-18-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia .proc.driver.nvidia.gpus.0: Error: [Errno 21] Is a directory: '/proc/driver/nvidia/gpus/0' .proc.driver.nvidia.registry: Binary: "" .proc.driver.nvidia.version: - NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 310.14 Tue Oct 9 11:52:41 PDT 2012 - GCC version: gcc version 4.7.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) + NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 310.14 Tue Oct 9 11:52:41 PDT 2012 + GCC version: gcc version 4.7.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) .tmp.unity.support.test.0: - + ApportVersion: 2.6.1-0ubuntu6 Architecture: amd64 CompizPlugins: [core, composite, opengl, compiztoolbox, decor, vpswitch, snap, mousepoll, resize, place, move, wall, grid, regex, imgpng, session, gnomecompat, animation, fade, unitymtgrabhandles, workarounds, scale, expo, ezoom, unityshell, dbus] CompositorRunning: None Date: Thu Nov 1 08:04:55 2012 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: quantal DistroVariant: ubuntu ExtraDebuggingInterest: Yes GraphicsCard: - NVIDIA Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] [10de:0622] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) -Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1073876] [NEW] 1680x1050 resolution has wrong clock value?
Public bug reported: Under ubuntu 12.04, the 1680x1050 mode worked perfectly on my Asus VW222s LCD screen. VGA card: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10) After upgrade to 12.10, the resolution appears chopped on the right, I can't see about 300 pixels. While tweaking monitor's OSD settings I found setting "Clock" that was at 50. When reduced to 0, I gained about 150 more pixels, but the rest of the pixels are still not visible. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1073876 Title: 1680x1050 resolution has wrong clock value? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966631] Re: [sandybridge-m-gt2] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x7a000003 with Google Maps(WebGL) in Chromium
I also have this issue with my Intel-I7-2600 based PC. The board is a original Intel one. With Ubuntu and Unity or Gnome (even Gnome in 2D mode) i get random lockups of the complete PC. It does not matter if i do anything or if i just leave the PC alone. If i do not login to Gnome or Unity the PC does not hang. So i tried XFCE4 and there i do not get any lockup as well. Just from time to time i get the crash of the script mentioned above. This lets me assume Gnome and Unity cannot handle these GPU lockups but XFCE does. Just the current window hangs for some seconds short before the error message appears. BTW: I am running 3.6.2-030602-generic at the moment because i had several kernel-oops with the original 3.2 kernel of Ubuntu 12.04LTS with this PC (also after updates). These do not occure with 3.6.2. You can find the details in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer-updates/+bug/1068404 The problem seems to be coming from a regression in the intel driver and a workaround is to revert the culpit patch, as describedin the comment #44 of the bug report. I am not sure if this is the appropriate list for any/both bugs, so please let me know if I should contact others for that.
