2012-07-27 Thread Andrew Brager
Sounds like whatever is displaying the image isn't being initialized
properly for whatever reason. "Reopening" it allows that function to
execute with the proper parameters. To sit on the page in the proper
place the coordinates of the image would have to be known and set
properly. If the images are "stacking" then they're all getting the same
set of coordinates. The trick is to figure out why.

For the laymen... the best analogy I can think of is to picture an
assembly line, with a conveyor belt. Empty bottles sit on the conveyor
belt. When you start the conveyor belt and the associated machinery
that fills the bottles with some liquid, the bottles are not aligned
properly so when the filling nozzle starts pouring liquid it misses the
bottle opening by just enough that it sprays onto the belt and spills
over onto the floor. By restarting the machinery at the exact moment
that the bottles are properly aligned it "fixes" the problem.

Kind of a lame analogy but like I say, the best I can think of at the
moment.

I generally have success accurately opening docx format files.
Occasionally I get one that I have to open MSO and convert to doc (2003)
or ODF 1.0/1.1. Usually it is some graphic layout that causes the
problem. This is known issue with LO and AOO.

docx file conversions are occasionally difficult because MS is trying to
push their proprietary MS Office and makes open the file accurately
problematic.

If you are using Linux, you might try Calligra Words (probably available
in your repository) to see if it is better at opening the file and
saving to odt.

This is possible - when I want to view a document from another
source in LO [and worked previously in OO],
I merely 'select all' then 'copy' then 'paste' ... many times,
the placement is off, but this can be fixed with a little time & effort.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Lost my spreadsheet

2012-07-27 Thread joto2036
Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply. I've inserted some answers to your questions as noted
below.

I do back up my computer about once per week.

Someone mentioned you have to go to Page to access your file. I went to Page
Preview and that brought the file back in.

I didn't have any problems with LibreOffice before. I used Open Office before.

Luckily, I have been also making a spread sheet for this same file on Excel
2007, for income tax purposes.

Thanks again.

create the format manually, but I understand the LibreOffice format
can't save user-defined formats. So my thought is to create a macro
which creates the format each time the spreadsheet is opened. The
user-defined Format Code is for a saved Style.

The macro records without incident and the date format is correct.
However, running the saved macro doesn't change the format. It seems
this should work. Thoughts? The recorded macro is as follows:

Hello,

The issue is a known one (AOO bug #66842). The office seems to support
some format codes that have no equivalent expression in the ODF standard.

It has been discussed in a productive manner here:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=53724
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=55344

I attached simple Basic macro to a demo document:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/download/file.php?id=14598

It links number formats to cell styles so the newly generated number
formats applies to all the cells where the style is in use.

Hope this helps,
A.S.

I'm uncertain of the proper method of labeling this as solved. But,
for my purposes it is and as I began the thread, perhaps [Solved] is
appropriate.

all of the programs listed below in webmaster-Kracked_P_P's post. In

use is to show the installed applications. When I do an upgrade, I
completely remove the old install using the terminal, and then do the
new install in the terminal. I use the following commands (This is for
the 64 bit 3.5.5.3 from LO):

Download LibO_3.5.5_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the

Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will give you the
folder LibO_3.5.5rc3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US
Run the following terminal commands to install it:
1. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*
2. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.5rc3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb

~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.5rc3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.5-debian-menus_3.5.5-3_all.deb

After this install, all of the applications below will show up in Dash.
To add them to the Launcher bar, simply drag the icons for the ones you
want to the launcher bar and place them where you wish to have them.
I've never had any issue with opening any of the applications.

I read several days ago that Unity is now available for Fedora and for

I still have Base listed, and working, in my Applications/Office menu
listing.

It shows:

LibreOffice 3.5
LibreOffice 3.5 Base
LibreOffice 3.5 Calc
LibreOffice 3.5 Draw
LibreOffice 3.5 Impress
LibreOffice 3.5 Printer Administration
LibreOffice 3.5 Writer

in that order.

SO
it could be the Repository version of LO and its "desktop-integration"
package, of it could be Unity's menu system.

As I said, I use MATE for Ubuntu 12.04 and I see Base in the menu.

I use MATE so I have the "best" looking GNOME desktop that looks and
acts like the GNOME desktop that I use for my desktop's 10.04/GNOME
system. I use the 10.04 system as my default system and wanted any of

looks/works like I want it to do.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for that information. I was aware of that. I have two concerns with
using it. First, it may update me when I don't want to be updated, like from
3.5.x to an early 3.6.x. I generally don't go to a new LibreOffice series until
the second beta has been finished, so for the 3.6 series, it would be 3.6.2.
The other concern is in the past I had issues with OpenOffice releases in the
Ubuntu repositories, and just seemed to have better luck with the ones directly
from OpenOffice/LibreOffice.

Any thoughts or comments about my thoughts would be appreciated. I'm assuming
the ppa you are speaking of is in the Ubuntu repositories and it is the Ubuntu
version.

However, running the saved macro doesn't change the format. It seems
this should work. Thoughts? The recorded macro is as follows:

Hello,

The issue is a known one (AOO bug #66842). The office seems to support

It has been discussed in a productive manner here:

I attached simple Basic macro to a demo document:

It links number formats to cell styles so the newly generated number

Hope this helps,

You did not mention what OS (operating system) you use. Windows
perhaps? If so, which one?
It may be something happened when you have this spreadsheet opened
which deleted your data in the spreadsheet. It is also possible that
something caused the spreadsheet to become corrupted. If this is the
case, others may should able to tell you how to possibly salvage your
data. The spreadsheet file is a zip file. This means that information
about the file can be extracted from it.

Re: [libreoffice-users] starting Base - works for me

2012-07-27 Thread Don C. Myers

Hi,

As I understand it, Mint uses the Ubuntu software center. The default LO
install in Ubuntu does not include base. If the user wishes to have base
installed, you would add that to the Ubuntu installation from the
software center. If I install from a direct LO download from LO, I have
all of the programs listed below in webmaster-Kracked_P_P's post. In
Unity, there is a launcher bar on the left side of the screen. The top
button on the launcher bar is called dash, which has multiple uses. One
use is to show the installed applications. When I do an upgrade, I
completely remove the old install using the terminal, and then do the
new install in the terminal. I use the following commands (This is for
the 64 bit 3.5.5.3 from LO):

Download LibO_3.5.5_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the desktop.
Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will give you the
folder LibO_3.5.5rc3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US

Run the following terminal commands to install it:
1. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*
2. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.5rc3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb
3. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.5rc3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.5-debian-menus_3.5.5-3_all.deb

After this install, all of the applications below will show up in Dash.
To add them to the Launcher bar, simply drag the icons for the ones you
want to the launcher bar and place them where you wish to have them.
I've never had any issue with opening any of the applications.

I read several days ago that Unity is now available for Fedora and for
Mint for those who would like to have it.

Hi,

Right - if you already had Base installed then an update will include
it.

Can you check Synaptic and verify that Base is installed. I think Ubuntu
and clones do not always install Base by default.

Please, when you are asking questions, compose a new email rather
than replying to someone email. Your email came in the midst of four
emails: three were discussing Base, and the four was yours that had
nothing to do with Base. This is because I tell my email client to
thread the emails. So do many of the other members of this list. This
groups the incoming emails (original and replies) by the original subject.
I have composed your original email including your subject. Now
this will be seen as a new subject and any replies will be threaded with it.
Now to answer at least part of your question: background images
for OTT documents. You need to open the Page style of your document, and
enter the required data in the Background tab. Then save the document as
a OTT. It should be saved in the user folder for LibreOffice.
Information on how to change the page style of a document is discussed
in the Writer Guide for LibreOffice available at

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications.
Changing the page style should also solve your other problem as well.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer loses format of MSOffice2007-Doc (watermark, embedded image, format etc)

2012-07-27 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I've often found that even tho images appear to have vanished they are still
really there somewhere.  That gives at least 2 opportunities;
1.  Edit and save without trying to find the images and then see if the images
apparently re-appear in the right places when the edited file is opened back in
MS Office 2007/2010
2.  Hunt around the edges of the pages and move any images you do find anywhere
to see if the other images have been hidden underneath as they tend to get
piled-up on-top of each other.

Regards from
Tom :)

Well just on the outskirts of NZ largest city I am 500m from the
roadside exchange box thing. The analogue line went out when it rained
and ADSL was next to useless. The national fibre trunk of the second
largest telco goes past the door but they won't tap it for me. I have

I was referring to trunks and phone systems. There are still plenty of
analog "POTS" lines in use, even in Canada. At the other end of your
analog phone line is likely a digital phone exchange. From that point
on, the entire phone network is digital and has been for many years. In
my own home, I have a standard phone, which is connected to a voice over
IP (VoIP) box which connects to my provider over the cable TV network.
The call quality is better than it was when I connected to the central
office over "twisted pair".

[libreoffice-users] Re: Date format macro.

2012-07-27 Thread Andreas Säger

I'd like to create a macro for a user-defined date format (H:MMa/p). As
examples, 7:00 AM would display as 7:00a and 3:33 PM as 3:33p. I can
create the format manually, but I understand the LibreOffice format
can't save user-defined formats. So my thought is to create a macro
which creates the format each time the spreadsheet is opened. The
user-defined Format Code is for a saved Style.

The macro records without incident and the date format is correct.
However, running the saved macro doesn't change the format. It seems
this should work. Thoughts? The recorded macro is as follows:

Hello,

The issue is a known one (AOO bug #66842). The office seems to support
some format codes that have no equivalent expression in the ODF standard.

It has been discussed in a productive manner here:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=53724
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=55344

I attached simple Basic macro to a demo document:
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/download/file.php?id=14598

It links number formats to cell styles so the newly generated number
formats applies to all the cells where the style is in use.

Hope this helps,
A.S.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Confluence Word doc export

2012-07-27 Thread Paul Keir

Hi,

The problem document referred to in my earlier email can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8bUb5ZVQs7iNUthMGs4Ry0xSnM
Like LibreOffice, Google Docs also cannot view it, though a link is
provided to the original file, at the end of the line starting:

"You can also try to download the original document by clicking"

Many thanks,
Paul

First off, I was thinking of the international trunks. Analog
systems are so obsolete that it would cost more to maintain them then
to replace. However, even domestically, the same still applies. I
don't know if you're referring to New York City or New York State,
but even assuming the city, Canada has about 4 × the population, or
16 × that of NZ, but the area of almost 10 million sq Kilometres is
close to 40 times that of New Zealand, yet the analog phone system is
long gone here.

BTW, I've worked in the telecommunications industry for most of my
career and it's been over 30 years since the last time I saw an

I live in the "county seat" of Chemung County in New York State. We
are a city, but not a big one, unlike the "county seat" 50 mile from
here. They are 10 time bigber than ours.

There is a program where the government is pushing broadband access
for most of the US users, but it does not mean that access is cheap.

What I would love to see is fiber to the homes instead of fiber to a
"node" somewhere in the 4-6 block area and then have coax to the
home. That is what here for our cable-modem system. Our DSL system
goes through the phone line, but it can be more expensive. They want
you to have a "regular" non-digital phone line with them before you
are able to get their service. So even if you want a digital-phone
service, you will be required to have a regular one as well. I have
my broadband downloading [only 120 MB/s uploading do to cable issues],
digital phone, and TV digital cable service from the one company. It
cost less this way, but is still cost a lot out of my budget.

I would love to see a cheaper solution in my area. With an
inexpensive broadband service, I could add a third-party digital phone
service and also watch most of my TV shows via the streaming video
services [free mostly, but paid sometimes]. I could cut my budget for
those services down to about a third of what I am currently paying.

What we need is the political boost for allowing competition in our
market instead of having one cable company and one phone company.
There is no competition to keep the rates down.

This is not possible. If you want to open MS Office with exactly preserved
formatting, then you must use MS Office. Preferably in the same version in
which
document was created.

LibreOffice is free (as in freedom) office suite, not MS Office documents
viewer.

[libreoffice-users] Writer loses format of MSOffice2007-Doc (watermark, embedded image, format etc)

2012-07-27 Thread Miriyala, Vasu
Hi Forum,

Appreciate your pointers or help on how to open the MS office word files in
writer while retaining the format of original intact. Currently Libre when
opening MSOffice-word2007 docs loses water mark, embedded image, images
inserted thru "insert features of word 2007" etc

Thanks, Vasu
