RE: In my case, the Seeing Eye GPS app is quite expensive.

2013-07-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kevin,

If your contract is done you can contact AT&T for official unlock
instructions, they are obligated by law to provide them and unlock your
phone. Once done your iPhone will work with any GSM carrier/SIM like
T-Mobile or MVNO's like Straight Talk. T-Mobile might be worth checking
into, I am in Canada and only know what I hear on the list and on Podcasts
like Today in iOS, but I believe they offer some less expensive plans.
Another advantage of unlocking your phone is that even an iPhone 4 when
unlocked has a higher resale value and is easier to sell.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Sieghard.

I'm not sure what I want to do yet. If the Treker Breeze does the same
things the Seeing Eye app does, it may be an option. As for using another
carrier besides AT&T, is that possible with my iPhone, which used to be with
AT&T. I also should have mentioned that I was outside of my 2 year original
contract, so it didn't cost me anything to get rid of the data plan.

Hi. thing is, my email is not set up. i don't know how to set it up

I have learned a good deal. But I have got the keyboard locked. it's
the thing left of the spaceBar. Well, it used to toggle locked and
unlocked; now it's just stuck on keyboard locked. any help appreciated.

Thanks.

RE: In my case, the Seeing Eye GPS app is quite expensive.

2013-07-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can as long as you either buy the phone outright or have completed your
contract. If you buy an iPhone at the subsidized price and commit to a year
contract then you can't cancel out of that after let's say 3 or 4 months and
switch to a prepaid plan unless you pay a huge penalty. I am pretty sure
Kevin either bought his phone or has completed his contract. When I bought
my first iPhone which was an iPhone 4 in 2010 I bought the phone at full
price for the same reason. I felt I stay with my relatively inexpensive
voice plan only, but I lasted about one months before I switched to a data
plan because to me having this fantastically accessible and capable device
only to disable a large amount of what it could do was not what I wanted.

Now, Kevin, if you are not under contract with AT&T then why not get a less
expensive plan from an MVNO like Straight Talk which may not give you 2 Gig
a month, but which will give you voice and some data for around $50 which
would most likely be more than enough for the small amount of data used by
the Seeing Eye app.

I guess in your case you also might really want to consider something like a
Trekker Breeze. If you end up spending $400 or even more a year extra for a
phone plan which you apparently don't need, then you could buy a Breeze for
that, it would be a one-time cost which means the Breeze pays for itself
after 1 year.

hi Kevin,

Were you able to cancel your data plan and keep voice service on your
iPhone? If so, I didn't know you could do that. I thought you had to have
a data plan if you had an iPhone.

Hi.

The following is a combination of a request and an observation. It's not
intended as a complaint. It's just to demonstrate that what's not too
expensive for some can be quite expensive in other cases.

My request to Sendero is to have the GPS information stored on the iDevice.
Earlier this year I canceled my data plan for my iPhone to save money. I
pay $25 for three months of phone service. If I were to reaquire a data
plan, my only reason for doing so would be to use the Seeing Eye app. For
most of you, who already have a data plan, you would be spending just for
the cost of the app, and your data plan can be used for other purposes. In
my case, however, the app would cost me something like $700, because I'd
have to purchase a 2 year contract from AT&T, plus the cost of a minimum of
a year for the app, and if I decide I don't want the app after the first
year, I'm stuck with an extra year of data that I probably wouldn't have
gotten in the first place.

That's my take on things. Again, I'm not complaining, I'm just throwing
another thought on things. I probably won't be purchasing the app for a
while, but I probably will get it, as well as the 2 gig a month data plan.
I can find other uses for the data besides GPS, so it will be worth it for
me.

Have a good day, and don't work too hard.

GO REDS!

Re: Bluetooth speaker

2013-07-07 Thread Elizabeth Campbell
Hello Donna I just recently purchased the Jawbone Jambox which is a small,
compact speaker. It is a bit more expensive, at approx $170, but it has
some features I really like, such as audible feedback when it is in pairig
mode, and sounds when the unit is turned on or off. It also gives a voice
announcemetn on battery life, and it also works well as a speaker phone for
the iPhone. I believe it also works with the Droidand Blackberry.
The Jawbone jambox can also be plugged in to your usb port on the computer
or the wall for charging. It can also be connected to the computer so that
you can update software for the speaker that improves audio quality and
also allows you to download all kinds of voices for your battery and
pairing announcements. I have been very pleased with it thus far after
using it for about a week.

Hope this helps.

hi Kevin,

Were you able to cancel your data plan and keep voice service on your iPhone?
If so, I didn't know you could do that. I thought you had to have a data plan

2013-07-07 Thread Chuck Dean
Such is the way of life. Some things we can afford and some we can not. 6 years
ago I bought a maestro /Trekker, which was the only GPS solution for visually
impaired people, and I paid fifteen hundred dollars for it.
Now we have a GPS app that only cost seventy dollars a year. Who knows what the
future may bring.
Hang in there!

In my case, the Seeing Eye GPS app is quite expensive.

2013-07-07 Thread Kevin Minor

GO REDS!

Rating Apps

2013-07-07 Thread Gary Petraccaro
I was asked whether I wanted to rate a couple of apps and wasn't sure how to
do it. How do you do it?
Also, I have the whip app from Big Bang and a recent update added music to
the one element which I use for fun and ruined it imho. What's the best way
to tell them this and try to get the previous incarnation?

Thanks.

Re: Taking Navigon offroad?

2013-07-07 Thread Tom Frank
I haven't found any way to take Navigon off road. As a matter of fact, I cannot
even set up a route in advance since my home is 550 feet from the main road and
Navigon will only give me the first instruction.

Have you tried Ariadne GPS??It's a fantastic program that I use often. I use
it to mark points of interest around the lake where I vacation so I can figure
out where i am when kayaking. It will give you straight line distances.

Free accessible Financial Calculator app: EZ Financial Calculators

2013-07-07 Thread Esther
Hi All,

I wrote up this app description in response to an AppleVis forum request for an
accessible financial calculator app that could calculate compound interest. It
seems to have been buried, and perhaps even gotten lost due to the change in
dropping Twitter notifications for comments at the time. Since this was an app
I just looked up to reply to a question, and not something that I use myself, I
didn't post this as an app directory entry. there may be better solutions, and
hopefully someone who regularly uses these kinds of calculators can either
submit a better suggestion, or else post the results of using this app. On the
other hand, in case there are any list members looking for accessible financial
calculators for compound interest, loans, return on investment, etc. I'm
appending my post below the App Store URL link.

• EZ Financial Calculators (free) by Bishinew Incorporated
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ez-financial-calculators/id494170744?mt=8

The free app, EZ Financial Calculators by Bishinew Incorporated, appears to
have the features you want.  This app lets you perform a variety of different
financial calculations, with the option of emailing the results, and also
accessing additional tables generated from your inputs, such as a table of
interest and balance listed by number of months for the period of your compound
interest calculation. This free app is ad supported, but the ads are
unobtrusive, and only appear at the bottom of the screen.  There is a paid
version of the app that will also do stock and bond calculations, but the free
app should do everything you want. There is one unlabeled button, the first
element on the screen, that is an info button for options to send email
feedback or access the developer's web site.  Accessibility of the various
financial calculators was very good, except for the generic calculator, whose
buttons were labeled by column and row position instead of functions.  You'll
want to use the default iPhone calculator instead.

When you launch the app you are on a screen with heading "Financial
Calculators" that lists different types of Financial Calculators you can
select. Flick through the list to the fourth entry, which is "Compound Interest
Calculator", and double tap.  The format of the calculator template is to list
items with corresponding text fields that you fill in, along with buttons to
"reset", "calculate", or for options to be set, such as the compounding method
(set to "monthly" by default, but double tap to select other options). The
onboard keyboard that comes up in the bottom half of the  screen for text
entry is similar to the dial pad for the phone: there's a nine-pack of numbers
1 thourgh 9 in the first three rows, and the bottom (4th) row has the period,
"0", and delete key in the bottom right corner. The input key action can be set
to either standard typing or touch typing by setting the rotor to "Typing
Mode".

So, for example, you'd enter the "Principal Amount", "Monthly Deposit",
"Period" of your calculation (in months), and "Annual Interest Rate %" into the
text fields, optionally change the compounding method by double tapping the
"Monthly" button, then double tap the "Calculate" button that is below the
"monthly" button and just above the "3" key of the onboard keyboard. The
onboard keyboard will disappear, and if you flick right you will be able  to
read the interest amount and maturity value.  Further flicking right gives
access to an "Email" button, that allows you to send the results of your
computation, and an "Interest Table" button that accesses a screen which lists
a table with 3 columns for the months, interest, and balance for the period of
your term calculation.  Double tap the "Back" button in the top left corner to
return to your "Compound Interest Calculator" screen, and then double tap the
"Home" back button in the top left corner to return to the home screen with the
list of financial calculators.

There are a large number of financial calculators listed, so you will want to
use the "Edit" button in the top right corner of the screen to reorder the list
so that the calculators you most frequently use appear first.  Double tap the
"Edit" button, then flick right to the calculator you want to list first (e.g.,
the compund interest calculator).  Following each listed financial calculator,
there witll be a button along the right edge of the screen to reorder the
position of that calculator.  VoiceOver will say, for example, "Reorder
Compound Interest Calculator, button, draggable; double tap and hold, wait for
the sound, then drag to rearrange."  When focus is on that button you can do a
double tap and hold gesture anywhere on the screen. Without lifting your finger
from the screen,  move it up.  You'll hear a plinking sound as you pass the
previous entry, and VoiceOver will announce "moved above Loan Calculator", or
whichever entry you pass.  While in edi

Hi Alan,

Apple has made it very easy to delete single songs, entire albums or the
music from an entire artist from your device. All you have to do is open the
Music app, select your view, e.g. Songs, Albums, Artist etc. then find what
you want to delete and flick down or app with a single finger. Voiceover
will say "Delete", then double tap once anywhere and the item is gone.

Apple has implemented the Action Rotor feature here just like in the Mail
app, so when you flick up or down you change the rotor from Default to
Delete and once delete is selected a single finger double tap will do the
trick. After this the rotor automatically goes back to the default behavior
which means if you double tap on another song, it would play that song or,
if it's an artist or album, it would open it.

Prevent iPod's, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically" in Edit,
Settings and the Device tab of iTunes Checking this or not has no effect on
what is being synced. What this does is simply prevent any iDevice from
starting a sync when it is connected to the computer which is the default
behavior.
There is another option when you have your iPhone or other iDevice
connected, it is under the Summary tab (which is the default tab) and it is
called "Open iTunes when this Device is connected. If you deselect this,
automatic syncing for that particular device will be disabled, but if you
only have one iDevice then that is the same as if you select the option
under Preferences, Device tab to prevent automatic syncing of all iDevices.
Below is the official explanation from Apple along with the link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1764?viewlocale=en_US

If you've set up automatic syncing, iTunes syncs your device by default
whenever you connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
If you don't want iTunes to sync your device without being prompted, you can
change this setting.

You can prevent unprompted syncing for any specific iPod, iPhone, or iPad;
or for all iPod, iPhone, or iPad devices you connect to your computer.

To prevent unprompted syncing for a specific iPod, iPhone, or iPad:
1. Connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
2. In iTunes, select your device (below Devices).
3. Click Summary, and then deselect "Open iTunes when this Device is
connected."

To prevent unprompted syncing for all iPod, iPhone, and iPad devices:
1. In iTunes, choose iTunes > Preferences.
2. Click Devices.
3. Select "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically."

If this checkbox is selected, any connected iPod, iPhone, or iPad won't sync
without being prompted.
To sync your iPod, iPhone, or iPad when unprompted syncing is disabled,
connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer, and then choose File >
Sync "Device Name" in iTunes, or click your device (below Devices) and then
click Sync.

OK, back to a bit more info from myself:

What is actually being synced will be determined by whether you check "Sync
entire music library" or "Sync Selected artists, playlists and genres" which
can be found after you connect your device, click on it in iTunes (or select
it from the sidebar if you have it enabled) and check the Music button/tab.
If you now tab through the selections you find these options. The "Sync
selected artists, playlists and genres" also allows you to select alubums
even though albums are not mentioned.

For Shannon it sounds like the proper selection would be the second one.
once that is checked, you can tab to where you get a treeview of your
playlists, artists, genres and albums and you can now arrow through these
lists and check anything you like. Assume you have 3 Dire Straits albums,
"Dire Straits", "Love over Gold" and "Brothers in Arms", you could check
Dire Straits in the artists treeview and it would then sync all 3 albums. If

Re: Bluetooth Headset Recommendation

2013-07-07 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, good question and sorry I forgot to mention that. Both M50 and
Samsung hm1700 get around 10 - 11 hours. But of course if you have Voice
Over chattering away all day it will be less. Charge time is about an
hour for a full charge from what I can tell. Oh, another thing I forgot
to mention is that the Plantronics M50 will display its battery
percentage on the iPhone screen, but the Samsung HM1700 will not.

Hi all, here's what I have, but note that this may not fit Mike's suggested
requirements.

Plantronics M50. This is a single ear- headset and it allows Voice over to work
when you are on and off a call. It's very light and comfortable and I could
wear this all day with no ear fatigue. The battery life is excellent, but the
call quality in my opinion leaves much to be desired. However let me state that
as yet, I haven't come across a Bluetooth headset which satisfies me in the
phone call quality department. The thing which I don't like about this one is
the volume can be a bit low if you are in a noisy environment. You have to
sometimes jack your phone up to 100% as well as the headset. When you do this,
the battery on both devices will drain more just so you know. Also, the
call/answer button is located right on the main part of the headset body, on
the outside of your ear. So, if you want to make an adjustment while on a call,
you might accidentally press the button and hang up on the person. I mainly
like this headset for listening to audio such as Voice Over telling

me which street I'm on using Ariadne, or Blind Square's voice telling me
information I need. I listen to audio books as well while on the bus. I don't
wear a headset at all when crossing streets. Sometimes the voice call quality
is so bad that I simply turn it off, and put the phone to my other ear when
talking. From what I can tell, this one only comes in black.

Samsung HM1700. Now this one is almost the same as the M50 I just described
above, but with the following differences. It comes with a standard round plug
for you ear, which fits me the best. If I use one of the 3 included
replacements, then it doesn't fit me as well and I'm constantly adjusting it.
Somehow the M50 has this right for my ear, but if your ear is shaped just
differently enough, the M50 might not fit right or might cause fatigue, with
this 1700 I have the choice of more than one ear plug, and so this might be
good for people with this kind of concern. Now, again, if I use the default
round one which doesn't stick out at all, it fits in my specific ear just fine
with no fatigue, but I do have to adjust it more than the M50. What I like
about this one more than the M50 is that the volume is louder. I don't have to
have my phone on max volume in order to hear things at a comfortable level.
Also, the call/answer button is located on the top edge, not the main body, of
co

urse, depending on which ear you put this in, it might be the bottom edge. In
any case, if I'm on a phone call and need to adjust the things, chances that I
will accidentally hang up on my call are less than with the M50 I think. The
body of this one is slightly bigger than the M50, so it will be more
noticeable, but that is ok with me. The call quality is sometimes good,
sometimes not so good, but the same is true for the M50 I think. The Samsung
HM1700 comes in different colors if you care about such things. Grey, red,
blue, ETC. I got the Blue one because it matches my mood and the color and
theme of my phone.

Both of the headsets I mentioned above will charge with a micro usb plug. So,
it's pretty standard here. Also, both have excellent talk time, and both are
small and will easily fit in a small carrying pouch or pocket. Both can be warn
on either ear, and both are usually under 30 dollars on Amazon. Below are links
to each headset below as well as a link to an excellent carrying pouch.

Re: Are YOU Using the LookTel Recognizer?

2013-07-07 Thread Traci Duncan
TapTapSee is the best app right now, but I've only been using it for a couple
months.

I also found bar code scanners to be easier. Apps such as red laser & consmer.
If one has a general idea where the bar code is, it is fairly painless to
figure out what the product is. Even as far as different flavors of yogurt, or
I have water bobble filters and the bar code told me the colors of the filter.

As far as kCups, TapTapSee rules in this category! :)

I don't use as much anymore, but I use to use VizWiz often. It was usually
helpful in identifying products.

Lol, I wish I could exchange an app. Looktell recognizer for look tell money.

Rob, you sure got that right. Well worth the 30 dollars even though I bought
Fleksy and Braille touch too. The app has been a steep learning curve for
me, but I finally can put fingers mostly in, the correct places. I am still
apparently not consistently spacing with my finger straight as I will get a
line space instead of a space and when using the dot mail sequence I will
open up the form before I want to. However even this is getting better. Love

Re: Nascar race audio

Also, you could use Tune-In radio to listen to the MRN feeds or the PRN network
works fine too.
I haven't found the Nascar too difficult to work with... Just have to get used
to it, cause the layout is a little tricky.

Re: Mbraille

2013-07-07 Thread Regina Alvarado
Rob, you sure got that right. Well worth the 30 dollars even though I bought
Fleksy and Braille touch too. The app has been a steep learning curve for me,
but I finally can put fingers mostly in, the correct places. I am still
apparently not consistently spacing with my finger straight as I will get a
line space instead of a space and when using the dot mail sequence I will open
up the form before I want to. However even this is getting better. Love this
app!

Hello everyone, I finally downloaded the mbraille app, the free one. I
have already purchased tbraille touch and just hate to put out the money
for another braille app. It appears to me, that there is really nothing to
be done with the free version except twitter, and getting the feel of the
keyboard. Am I missing something or is there more to be done with the free
version? I would love to be able to write in contracted braille, but I
might just have to wait. Can you use the clip board with the free

RE: email rools,

2013-07-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I believe when you set up a rule to move a message that there is a checkbox
to "Delete from Inbox" or something like that and you have to check that. If
you don't I believe whatever label is applied to your message, but it also
remains in your Inbox. You will have to log into your gmail account online,
find your rule, edit it and look for that checkbox. I don't use gmail, so I
can only repeat what has been said.

Hi, since you use gmail, this is going to be the best way to do what you
ask. Simply setup labels on the gmail site http://mail.google.com/mail/h
and then set up filters so that viphone messages or whatever are
assigned the proper label. Labels in gmail are like folders. You can
make it so messages to viphone skip the inbox and have the viphone label
applied. The iPhone sees labels from gmail as folders.

Hope that helps.

I wouldn't mind a QR code generating app. I also wouldn't mind a usable bar
code scanner (of which "RedLazer" isn't). I use Omobe for a lot of text

that its slow and can't cope with pill bottles. I have seen similar problems

them can do all the work needed.

I imagine Tracy probably meant Tap Tap See and Talking Goggles although
Talking Goggles has been removed from the app store right now. The developer

A suggested use for audio labels.

2013-07-07 Thread Sandratomkins
HI,

Having been reminded of Audio Labels, by the recent discussion re labelling
boxes for a move, I bethought myself "Hmmm, I remember thinking when this first
came out, there could be many and varied uses for it", but in the intervening
months/years, I forgot all about it. So, here goes with a suggestion for its
use, hoping to spur more inventive thought.

So, you have time on your hands. You have that huge CD collection that you
have always meant to label, but have never got round to it. You don't have
access to a pair of functioning eye-balls. So, how to complete the task?

Answer: you need 2 Apps.
1. QR Code Reader.
2. Audio Labels.
plus an internet connection.

1. Choose your CD and scan the back for the bar-code using QR Code Reader.
2. Now you have the name of the CD and artist, Google for the track details.
(there are loads of sites out there with this info). Then snip the appropriate
details/track list and copy to clip-board.
3. Scan the bar-code again using Audio Labels. Click on "Description" (now it
might not be called that, I don't want to lose my place by opening the app just
now, but it is obvious anyway). Now, you can chose to just add the name/artist
into the Title edit field and then, in the details page, paste the track list
you got from the net. and, voila! Next time you use Audio Labels to scan the
CD, you will have the title/artist and, with a couple more taps, all the track
details!

And all done with your iPhone and, i think I am right in saying, 2 free
apps! And all done without sighted help.

I should say that I tried using prizmo/Text Grabber for the info, which
could also be pasted into the Audio label, but, thus far, find the results of
scanning CDs less than inspiring, often needing several attempts and, in the
end, not as good as taking it from the net.

Actually, the potential of Audio Labels for us is vast IMHO, any thoughts?

Scanning Sandy.

Re: Mbraille

2013-07-07 Thread Chris H
You can write and edit in both uncontracted and contracted Braille and
send the text as a tweet. I believe the clipboard works too but didn't
play with the free version enough as had spare credit to use so I
upgraded to the full version.
