I don’t know the technicalities, but based on my research, maybe the arc input on the television does the conversion where it strips the video from the TV. I just started learning on this from this thread and research. RE: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results
Hello Gary, I received the new Apple TV 4K today and while I didn't try to connect it yet directly to my Arc, I did try to connect my old Apple TV HD (4th generation) to my Sonos Amp. Here is what I got when I opened the Sonos app, selected Bedroom (where my Sonos Amp is located) and then I selected "TV": We detected an issue with your HDMI connection. We'll help you fix it. Fix it button Close button So I double tapped on "Fix It" and the following screen came up: Let's get your Sonos Amp connected to your TV Continue button I tapped on Continue and the next screen came up: Turn on your TV, then plug the HDMI cable into the ARC port. Then I had the following 3 options: Connected to ARC button Can't find ARC button Close button So I tapped on "Connected to ARC" and after it said "connecting" for a few seconds, the next message came up: HDMI ARC not detected. Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the ARC port and your TV is on. Try Again button Close button No ARC port? You need to use an optical audio adapter. So apparently connecting an Apple TV directly to a Sonos device via HDMI simply won't work. One could argue that this is silly, but then again let's remember how extremely specialized this is to the visually impaired/blind customer base since I just can't see any sighted person at all wanting to do this. If they did and it actually worked they would have to use Voiceover in order to navigate their Apple TV and I really can't imagine a sighted person wanting to do this. In any case, all the music services are pretty much available directly through the Sonos app and when it comes to "listening" to TV audio I don't have to point out how pointless that would seem to sighted people. If you did have or buy a Sonos Amp then you would have an optical audio input available and I assume if you had an "optical audio converter" as the Sonos app suggests, you would probably be successful in getting audio from the Apple TV into your Sonos system. I don't want it bad enough to go out there and buy an optical audio adapter to try it, but in any case, since the Sonos Beam only has an HDMI input that really wouldn't be an option. I may at some point unplug the new Apple TV from my LG OLED TV and plug it directly into the Arc to see if I get the same message. But I am pretty sure I would and I don't have a lot of time until at least the beginning of the new year so it won't be any time soon. I guess if you really wanted to listen to Netflix, Disney, Prime Video or other TV channels on your Sonos Beam then you could always splay the content on your iPhone and then send it to the Beam via Airplay. Best regards and good luck, Sieghard -Original Message- From: 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com>> Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2022 10:28 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com<mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> Subject: Re: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results Well I picked up a SONOS Beam 2 last week and connected it to my APPLE TV 4K latest version. I set up the Beam and plugged it into the EARC port on my LG TV and it worked ok. I switched everything off and re-plugged the Beam into the HDMI port on the APPLE TV using the SONOS cable which they confirmed supported EARC etc. The results - nothing! I couldn't get a sound out of the APPLE TV, needless to say as soon as I re-plugged it into the back of my LG TV it came alive with Voiceover etc so the APPLE TV was working fine. I have been doing some GOOGling around and found an APPLE support article which seemed to suggest that you could plug the APPLE TV into a sound bar to get DOLBY Audio sound. When I had the APPLE TV plugged into the LG I had a look around the settings under video/sound but couldn't find any reference to immersive audio or DOLBY Audio. The article suggested that if this was the case your surround equipment settings needed checking. Presumably in this case this means the BEAM. Any suggestions? Re: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results
Hi Feliciano, I already know that the APPLE TV does not need to be connected to a TV as such since it works perfectly well plugged into my Meridian HDMI switch which fronts my surround processor regardless of whether the TV is on or off. I think it just needs to be able to "see" a device capable of handling a video signal at the other end. I've ordered one of the HDMI audio extractors and will give it a try with my NAIM MUSO which supports analogue and optical digital inputs. Thanks for your efforts as you say APPLE don't necessarily know all the answers especially when it comes to connecting to third party equipment. I'll let you know when I get the converter this weekend what happens. Hi, Just because Apple does not have a solution does not mean that there isn’t one. People have achieved many solutions with hex like converters. You can try the one that I mentioned in the email prior to this. RE: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results
Both Beam and Arc have only an HDMI input, the older Sonos Playbar and I believe the Playbase connected to the TV with an optical cable and I believe the small Sonos Ray soundbar also has an optical input. I should get my new Apple TV 4K this week so I'll also play around with it hooking it up directly to our Arc, but in our case it doesn't really matter since I practically never watch or listen to the TV unless it's with my sighted wife and then of course the TV is on as well. If a direct connection between the Apple TV and the Sonos Beam really doesn't work without a TV in between then the only option might be to have some sort of splitter which extracts the audio but then you still have to have something you can direct this audio stream to and unless you have another splitter on the Beam which allows you to hook up an optical cable from the first splitter then you may have to have a Sonos Port. The Port has rCA analogue inputs and outputs as well as a Coax digital input and output, but as long as you could get the audio into the Port, you could then group it with your Beam and play the audio from the Apple TV that way. But it would involve a significant amount of gadgets and fiddling around and to me it would not be worth it. Alternatively one could try to find out if a Sonos Amp which has an HDMI input could receive audio from an Apple TV if it were directly connected. Then Gary could put a Sonos Amp with either bookshelf speakers or in-wall or in-ceiling speakers into the bedroom. I can also test this since we have a Sonos Amp and in-wall speakers in our bedroom so before I put my new Apple TV in its final resting place inside my entertainment cabinet, I could certainly hook it up to the Sonos Amp and see what happens. Fort hat matter, I could try this also with our older first generation Apple TV HD, I believe they called it the fourth generation Apple TV and it came out in 2015 after the Apple TV third Gen was discontinued. I thought we already had the first generation Apple TV 4K, but when I checked the model number which is A1625 and I looked it up I realized we bought it in 2015 and it's just the apple TV HD. I now ordered the latest Apple TV 4K with 128 Gb of RAM simply because the price difference to the 64 Gb is not a lot and only the 128 Gb has support for thread networking which is the new standard necessary for Matter support. For those who don't know what Matter is they can read the below article from 9to5MAAC: Apple drops smart-home feature from base Apple TV<https://9to5mac.com/2022/10/18/apple-tv-4k-thread-support/> -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com<mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com>> On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2022 10:37 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com<mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com> Subject: RE: Apple TV without a physical screen - Results When we first got our Apple TV 3rd generation, I had to get an optical audio converter to get the sound to go through our then stereo receiver and not the TV speaker only. P

When we first got our Apple TV 3rd generation, I had to get an optical audio converter to get the sound to go through our then stereo receiver and not the TV speaker only. This was before we got Sonos products and a Smart TV and stopped using the physical Apple TV. I wonder if you need something like that to direct the audio through the soundbar? Though, I don't know what inputs the Beam2 has, if it is just the HDMI port, then that idea may not work. You should be able to get an HDMI to Optical adapter. Which soundbar do you have, is it a Sonos? If so it must be the older Playbar or the Playbase, those were connected to the TV with an optical connection. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Joney Owen Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2022 1:24 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Apple TV without a physical screen? Yes, it would work because that is what receivers are made for just as HDMI inputs on TV's are made for this. Anyways, I have a feeling with the secondor third generation Apple TV 4K you will be able to plug it straight into a Sonos Beam or Arc, but hopefully Gary will report back once he has picked up his Beam and tried it. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Kelly Ford Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2022 1:43 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Apple TV without a physical screen? Yes, they do have good deals for those who are not yet invested in Sonos. I was hoping to get the 20% off the new Sub Mini, but no such luck, the only deal I saw here in Canada is a little over 10% off and then you have to buy it with a set of Sonos One or Sonos SL speakers and I don't need them. Oh well, I think I may have some older Sonos One first generation speakers and I could use the 15% upgrade credit Sonos offers to buy a Sub Mini and then sell them since I currently have more Sonos speakers than I really need or use. -Original Message- From: 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2022 1:23 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Apple TV without a physical screen? RE: Apple TV without a physical screen?
Given Apple has a 30-day return policy you could always try it if you don't get a definite answer. My guess is that it would work. The only Sonos soundbars with an HDMI input are the Arc and the Beam, the smaller/less expensive Ray does not have an HDMI input. Do you already have another Apple TV with a TV connected and a Sonos setup elsewhere in the house? If so you could always whatever you want to listen to there and group any Sonos speaker you want even if it were just a single Sonos SL which I believe would be the cheapest Sonos speaker you can buy. If my TV wasn't mounted inside a cabinet with very little clearance which makes it more difficult to unplug things and plug them back in I'd try it because we have a Sonos Arc, but our Apple TV is connected by HDMI to the TV and then the Sonos Arc is connected also by HDMI to the eARC port of our LG Tv. I am most likely going to upgrade to the recently released Apple TV 4K as ours is if I remember correctly the first Generation Apple TV 4K which was released in 2017 with the A10X processor, then they released the second Gen with the A12X processor just last year and this year the third generation with the A15X CPU which I understand is very noticeably faster and of course it comes with the new remote. If I do I can try to connect it directly to the Arc before I put it in place and hide all the cables behind our cabinet. -Original Message- From: 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2022 9:58 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Apple TV without a physical screen? Re: Apple TV without a physical screen?
Hi, For what it is worth, I do have my Apple TV plugged into the HDMI port of my receiver. This is a Marantz receiver. This works fine with the Apple device and does not require my TV to be connected or on for the Apple device to work. The Apple device is the newest 4K unit. > On Nov 20, 2022, at 3:23 PM, 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone > wrote: > > Hello all, > > Thanks for the feedback. RE: Apple TV without a physical screen?
Hi again, So it would seem that you cannot plug an Apple TV directly into the HDMI port of a Sonos Beam or Arc. Here is part of an article I found on iMore: Can you use Sonos Beam with Apple TV? Best Answer: Yes! While the Sonos Beam doesn't work directly with the Apple TV, there is a workaround. Basically, you plug in the Apple TV to your TV via HDMI. Then, plug your Sonos Beam into your TV through the HDMI-ARC port, ensuring that HDMI-CEC is enabled (this allows devices to work better together). If everything is working as it should, the audio from your Apple TV should go to the TV, relaying it through the Sonos Beam. If your TV is older than five years or doesn't have an HDMI-ARC connection, you need to use an optical audio adapter included with the Beam. Question: So I can't just plug in my Beam to the Apple TV itself? Unfortunately not. The Sonos Beam must get plugged in through an HDMI-ARC connection, which even the best Apple TV doesn't have, but most modern TVs do. HDMI-ARC (Audio Return Channel) is a special signal unique to TVs and therefore gets a different label than a typical HDMI port. I forgot to check when this article was written, but another Google search indicates that the Apple TV 4K 2nd Generation which was released in 2021 as well as the newly released Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen do in fact have and support HDMI-ARC as well as e-ARC (enhanced audio return channel). If this is so a 2nd Gen or brand-new 3rd Gen Apple TV 4K may very well work if directly connected to a Sonos Beam, Arc or Sonos Amp. Just make sure you have an HDMI cable which is capable of this, the one which comes with your Sonos soundbar should be fine. Alternatively you can get these splitters/audio extractors where you connect your Apple TV to the audio extractor and it then has most likely even analogue outputs, but then you may need another adapter to go from the audio extractor to your Beam or you could of course get a Sonos Five which has a 3.5mm audio input or a Sonos Port which has both analogue RCA inputs (the old left and right, red/white) as well as Coax digital inputs. However, then you have to also connect powered speakers to the Sonos Port unless you in turn connect it to an existing receiver or amplifier which has speakers connected. What I am saying is that almost everything is possible, but it may not always be practical. -Original Message- From: 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone Sent: Saturday, November 19, 2022 9:58 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Apple TV without a physical screen? Hi all, Does anyone know if the Apple TV will work if it is plugged directly into a soundbar such as one of the Sonos devices rather than into a tv and thence to a soundbar? I am trying to create a TV sound receiver for a small bedroom and don't want a full sized TV screen as I can't see it anyway. I am suspicious that the Apple TV box will complain because it can't see a display device.. Thanks Gary -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. RE: Re: Apple TV without a physical screen?
If I understand this, you still need a TV? My cable company has something called Stream. I can get all the television I want using my iPhone. Since something has gone wrong between my router, my TV, and its remote, and since it takes from ten to fifteen seconds for the sound to come up for me to know if the TV is on, I like this choice, but would prefer something which could be used even if I leave Comcast. - Original Message - From: Matthew Bullis Date: Saturday, November 19, 2022 03:23 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Apple TV without a physical screen? Apple Accessibility is available 24/7 at 877-204-3930 I suspect the answer is that the Apple TV won't care, but short of just trying it, the good folks at Apple could answer your question quickly.
