Rosemary,

I am the guy who has restored lots of Macs and given them away to needy people 
and students.

Getting a bit old @ 82+ but still working.  I would welcome the chance to 
restore it for someone else.

Download sites such as Softonic have a large button or big green arrow to 
download what a person is led to believe is what they are after…..turns out to 
be a piece of software which is definitely not wanted.

Hi,

I have a few Macs needing an upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard.  I cannot 
find an upgrade download for this.  Anyone help me with a disk or a copy for my 
flash drive?

USB modems

I am hoping that some member(s) are using, or have recently used,  a USB modem 
on a PPC Mac.

I have a nice collection of G5 PPC towers to distribute and cannot find a USB 
modem which will run on PPC Macs.  Any ideas for me?  Virgin had one, but no 
longer sells or supports USB modems.

Hi Ronni,

I have a few G5 towers.  I also bought a couple of the Apple USB modems, but 
they look as though they need a phone line to connect.
PPC machines are getting to be a bit like me….still work OK but can’t handle 
the latest technology.   I get very few donations of intel machines.

Hi,
I am prepring an old Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 for a welfare recipient.

She will want to buy a USB modem.  They are cheap enough; around $20.

I bought one from videophone, but it doesn’t like 10.4.11 or 10.5.8. PPC

RAM for old Mac

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can help me with some vintage RAM for a Powerbook G4 I 
have set up for a welfare recipient.  It is SDRAM PC133U-333.

I have a couple of bags of vintage RAM, but no SD laptop RAM.  The laptop 
already has 2 X 256 sticks and I am hoping to find a couple of 512s,

I followed your instructions, but the mouse key was off and I changed nothing.  
Just now tried the numerical keypad and it now works

Thanks for your input, but I really don’t know how it happened as I had made no 
changes to preferences.  Computers will rule the world; fortunately after I am 
gone.

Strange keyboard problem

today I noticed that the numbers on my extended Mac keyboard are not working.   
 The numbers in the QWERTY area work still.I have changed keyboards but the 
same problem occurs.I have tried the keyboards on other Macs here and they 
work fine.

Repaired permissions, but still nothing.

Any clues for me on this problem?

Elements 6 simply would not open.  I uninstalled it and tried to install it 
again, but even though I haven’t assigned a password to that iMac it would not 
complete the installation. bootstrapper.dmgassetssetup notice saying ’setup 
wants to make changes. Type in your password to allow this’.  Tried all my 
passwords ( I am 75) and my google password, to no avail.

I’ll just use another Mac for Photoshop tasks.

I am turning into a bit of a luddite.A couple of my Macs running 10.6.8 run

Ronnie,

it’s not a biggy as I have PS Elements 6 on several other machines on my 
network loaded with working Elements 6 and can use one of them and email myself.

I did notice that the Photos app took over from iPhoto, but after a short look 
at I am reasonably happy with that.

My long-term project restoring Macs for needy people is stuck at the PPC G4/G5 
level and Adobe’s Flash player is no longer supported (or rather it's that 
older Macs are no longer supported).

FYI, I have a work around to get over the Flash problem with PPC Macs, if your 
prob. is with using a PPC Mac.

noisy power supply in MirrorDoor Mac

Hi,

hoping someone might have an old Mirror-Door tower in a shed which might have a 
quiet Power Supply.  The one I have is a nice machine for some needy person, 
but the power supply fans are very noisy.

Another problem I have with a lot of PPC machines I have refurbished is Adobe 
not supporting PPC machines with its Flash program.  I have found a workaround 
from a fellow in the U.S., but am a bit peed off that like me, old stuff gets 
unsupported.

Ronni,

update on noisy fans in G5 tower.

I had reset PRAM and PMU and with a compressor blew out any dust inside.  The 
fans start up loud and die down as the OS appears on the screen, then get loud 
again without opening any applications.   The air coming out the back of the 
tower is barely warm.

It is a quad G5 and nice and fast.  If I can find someone who is need of a good 
fast machine I think they will put up with a bit of noise……it aint that bad.

noisy fans

Hi all,

I am preparing a nice PPC G5 tower for distribution (liquid cooled model).  The 
fans are very noisy and I have not been able to find a fix on the net.  Both 
pieces of software I have will not run on this machine.

Any ideas for me?

from the iMac I use for work.  I won’t do an upgrade of iTunes again.   When I 
googled it there seems to be plenty of people who have lost their library.

 Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash

 the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further 
 housekeeping. 
 
 In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes 
 Library files. 
 Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. 
 Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename 
 the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. 
 
 Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions 
 from your library.
  
 When you get it all working make a backup!

Help please

One of the many Macs donated to my project is a G5 PPC tower, but the 
specialised power cable is missing.   It differs from the normal power cable by 
having the contacts horizontal rather than vertical
If any list members has one of these cables I would be happy to receive/buy it. 
 

All Macs donated to me go free to needy folks. None are sold or given to 
friends or family.

My ongoing project to give Macs to needy people has slowed somewhat as I have 
run out of machines.  The demand is still there from a couple of welfare 
organisations and I get requests to help out almost 
weekly.

I have been running this project for almost 15 years and have distributed an 
estimated 500+ Macs to families, students, young mums etc.  I feel that it is a 
worthwhile project both for the recipients and my old brain.


So, if list members have any older (at least G4) Macs in the spare room or 
the shed, I can make good use of them.

I give my assurance that any donated machines will not be sold, or given to 
family or friends.

Thunderbird

Do any listers use Thunderbird?   I like it except for one annoying 
feature which I have not been able to fix.  It has an Inbox scoll bar 
across the top which replaces the regular inbox/mail in tab.
Most annoying when I have to scroll back through all the emails in to 
get to inbox.


Has anyone heard of a way of deleting the scrollbar function?

iBook battery

I have been given an iBook for my project.  The battery is U/S. I am 
happy to buy a reasonable battery if any listers have one in a discarded 
iBook no longer operating.

The Error 9813 alert occurs when there is an issue with the root

running the exact same version of Mac OS X as your computer,

I have just had a request for a computer for a very needy family.  I 
recently placed 15 Macs in similar situations and unfortunately have 
nothing suitable for this mum at the moment.  Her daughter is about to 
start high school and needs a machine for studies.   I am hoping that 
someone on the list has one (preferably around 1GHz or better) no longer 
needed.

out driving today and I found the exact same model on a roadside 
pickup.  I have removed the power supply and will test it tomorrow.   I 
have another mate who has one in working condition and may be able to be 
talked in to letting me have it if the power supply I have removed is U/S.

I had mine repaired today @ Garden City by some young Chinese guys with 
a business name of /iworkshop./ Screen replacement cost $98.
They are also in Perth City, Northbridge, as well as Garden City. Less 
than an hour to do the job.

PowerMac 7200

I am trying to refurbish a 7200 for a fellow lister.  It works, but a 
few of the plastic bits, such as the start button have plastic cancer.  
Does anyone have one of the beige boxes sitting around which would have 
the same basic bits that is destined for landfill?

Ronni,

sorry I didn't let you (and others) know which suggestion finally fixed 
the problem.

I had previously installed that firmware update and there are just a few 
icons on the desktop.

I followed your last suggestion of having the desktop Sort by name and 
Cleanup by name and all is well.

iMac woes

My 27 iMac  ( OS 10.7.5 3.1GHz i5) displays a screen flash when I drop 
a file onto the desktop.

I am not alone with this problem.  Google shows numerous examples of the 
same problem on different OS. I have not yet determined which files 
or folders cause this problem, but it is a bit worrying as I have never 
seen this before on the hundreds of Macs I have restored.

Has anyone experienced this and is it something that has a fix?

Dead eMacs

Hoping somebody has had a similar experience and I can save a few eMacs 
from landfill.

These few machines will not start up. When the start button is pressed 
they make a clunk sound, but nothing more.  I have replaced hard drives, 
RAM and battery to no avail.

Any ideas for me before I salvage speakers, HDrives etc and take a trip 
to the tip.

guys who seem to do all sorts of repairs on the spot.  Might be worth 
going there for a look.

Thanks for your efforts Geoff, but I did get the printer working which 
saved me a lot of workaround stuff transferring data from his PPC 5200CD.

If he has any more problems I will give him a G3 iMac slot loader and a 
matching printer and he can transfer his data on floppies to the iMac.

am helping my Canon i560.   The Canon has a driver for OS 9, however the 
Performer 5200 doesn't have USB:-( .

printers which has an OS 9 driver.  It is a Canon i560 which has 
separate ink tanks (without chips) that are cheap as chips from Hong Kong.

I have decided to give him one of my own Canon printers which has an OS 
9 driver.  Stylewriters are a bit clunky and past their use-by date.
It is a Canon i560 which has separate ink tanks (without chips) that are 
cheap as chips from Hong Kong. I have been refilling the tanks for years 
and of late, using the HK tanks and I know it will serve him well.

Mike,

I have been restoring and recycling Macs for 11 years.  They go to needy 
folks @ no charge.

Without '/looking a gift horse in the mouth/' I am now restriction 
myself to minimum of G4s or G3 iMacs with a slot load CD reader.  If you 
have something like that I would be most interested in taking a look at 
your collection.

Stylewriter printer

I have been asked to help a chap get his Stylewriter printer working 
again.   He uses a 5200 and the Stylewriter as a word processor.  It 
seems as though it has given up the ghost.

I am hoping that someone on the list has a cache of old Mac gear which 
includes a Stylewriter; and who might like to donate it to me for this chap?

He loves his set-up and wants to keep it all as he knows it.

VOiP with Vivid Wireless.

I am with Vivid Wireless and was using VOiP but gave it up as it was 
unreliable; echoes, sometime good,sometime poor reception.

Is anyone on the list using VOiP with Vivid Wireless successfully?

Ken,

  I refurbish older Macs and give them away to needy folks, but these 
days people are only interested in machines with an Airport card.  I do 
do early slot-loader iMacs which I load with OS9 educational software 
and if that is what you have I can use it/them.  I also gift any older 
digital cameras and printers which have carts which can be refilled by me.
