It is  generally-accepted troubleshooting principle these days that if  
your computer begins exhibiting problems after an incremental update  
from Software Update, that downloading and applying the larger "Combo"  
update form Apple's website can be an instant fix. For my own part, I  
have never had to do this. Every incremental update has always worked  
successfully first time.

Hi...

I'm thinking you mean 'delta' update. Delta being shorthand for 
'change' (as in delta-v for change in velocity). The Delta update 
only includes the changes from the previous version. Having a smaller 
update means it takes less time and bandwidth for everyone to 
download it.

That would be the "alpha" update, which is the smaller update from 10.5.3 to
10.5.4.
Generally (as a rule) you're better off with the larger update, as it's got
everything mixed together.
(And you find most people who have problems have done just the alpha update
and not the combo update,...)
