[WISPA] A New WISPA Vice-President Has Been Elected

2008-12-23 Thread Jack Unger
WISPA's Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer)
are selected each year by the WISPA Board from currently serving Board
members. WISPA has been without a Vice President for the last few months.

At the December 11th Board meeting, the Board acted to elect a new
Vice-President. Three Directors (Tom DeReggi, Mac Dearman and Butch
Evans) were nominated and all agreed to serve if elected. Each received
three votes during the first round of balloting. After the three-way
tie, all three were asked to submit a statement to the Board describing
why they wished to serve as Vice-President. Prior to the second round of
voting Mac Dearman chose to endorse one of the other two candidates,
effectively making the election a two-person race.

A second round of online voting was held on December 22nd and 23rd.
Butch Evans received 4 votes and Tom DeReggi received 5 votes. Please
congratulate Tom on his new position as WISPA Vice-President and wish
him well as he steps up to the plate to help lighten the workload of
WISPA President Rick Harnish and the other WISPA Directors.

Congratulations to all and thank you to all three of these gentlemen for
the volunteer work that they do for WISPA members.

Jack Unger
WISPA Secretary

Re: [WISPA] Sky Pilot question

2008-12-23 Thread Tom DeReggi
My opinion differs. I think they are a really neat design. They enable the
use of higher power, due to the higher (7db) rules for Smart antennas.
I think they killed their viabilty for me, when they doubled their price,
after I already thought their price was to expensive by a factor of 2x-3x.
Only verticle pol, to take advantge of their smart antenna.

I have never tested compatibilty with Ubiquiti though. I do not know if that
works or not.

I've been told they're not that great, very expensive and ridiculously
simple setup (easy but insecure) by a couple of people.

I have no direct experience because of this, though.

Re: [WISPA] Multi-Mode Fiber Tools - Source

2008-12-23 Thread Tom DeReggi
It is NOT complicated with the Corning system.
We have trained all our technicans to do it, within 15 minutes. I was even
able to teach my 10 year old son how to do it, in equal time.

One of the biggest cost savings you can make is learning how to terminate
the fiber. It can be as easy and as cheap for us to run Fiber as Cat5.

However, Terminating Fiber takes care. Corning's self-tutorial manual is
very well written and easy to follow comparatively.
However, it is hard at first to understand vague terms, that leave room for
interpretation.
For example, if the statement was made "little or no light should escape
through the connector", exactly what does "no light" look like on the
connector wall?
For example, "Apply hard pressure to the", exactly what is the amount of
pressure is appropriate?
People are often afraid to break the fiber, and do not apply enough
pressure, not realizing that the tool has safety measures to prevent over
pressuring.
Because of this, it can be really helpful to have an experienced installer
show someone on staff how to do it, the first time.
Many local Fiber supply resellers will offer to give you a free
demonstration, if you buy the fiber termination kit from them.

The difficulty with Fiber, is understanding it, to know what to suspect, if
there is a problem needing troubleshooting. It also takes a significant
dollar commmitment, to purchase the Fiber tools and testing kits. It starts
at about $1000 for the kit. Testing can be done with a simple light tool.
However, to be more accurate and timely in troubleshooting, a light meter
can be purchased, but you just added another grand in costs.

My point is there is a skill to it, and some minor training is needed.
But it is NOT hard, with Corning.

You just have to ask yourself do you have enough need to do it, to justify
the learning cure, and tools.

If you offer a SLA to your customers over a fiber cable that is under your
control, I'd argue that you have no responisble choice to learn how to do
it, and be prepaired to do it, even if you were to decide to outsource the
termination of it the majority of the time.

The problem is, its not a simple thing to jsut say, "I'll go recrimp all the
cables and see if that helps". Every connector is $15. And every termination
takes 10 minutes. It gets expensive to make mistakes, and not understand the
technology.

If you take the time to learn it, it is much easier than you probably
expect.

The other issue is its important to fully udnerstand the types of cable.
Getting the right type for the job, goes a long way to make it easy. It can
be frustrating, when you are uncertain of something, and there is nobody to
ask.

2008-12-23 Thread Scott Reed
We use FAST-LC (or FAST-SC) connectors. You just need a cleaver.
Cleave the strand, push it in, press the release, test it, use it.
Take a look at
http://www.afltele.com/products/optical_connectivity/connectors/FastConnectors.html
There is a video and it is as easy as it looks.

I highly recommend Corning's Ez system. (no polishing needed). (That might
not be the exact name)

It is the easiest way to do it, and the most cost effective way to do it. It
is also very reliable to do it that way. The odds of a person making an
error polishing typical connectors is higher than the odds of the Ez crimp
not completing successfully and cleanly.

There are some drawbacks to the Corning Ez system, regarding outdoor
deployment. They don't make a metal or extreme temperature version of an FC
connector. They do however make a plastic water proof FC for typical outdoor
environments. They also do not include all the right size boots for
transitioning their FC connector to some types of typical all-exposed
outdoor type cable (meaning cable that does not require special breakout
termination or not inside conduit or NEMA boxes). They also make a extreme
temperature connector for all their other type conectors, such as LC, SC,
ST. There are standard methods for doing the transition from indoor to
outdoor, and doing outdoor terminations.

For all indoor use, I am not aware of any downside. It works great. To do
the Corning system, you need both Corning connectors and the Corning tools.
The one tool supports all connector types, with the exception that there is
a small insert for the tool (that needs purchased) for two of the connector
types.

We do almost all our jobs as LC. But take note that SC connectors are 25%
less expensive and the connector type that you should use really depends on
the gear you plan to connect. Recent Intel and Cisco uses LC, but SC is more
common in other brand gear, low priced gear, and used gear.

Re: [WISPA] Multi-Mode Fiber Tools - Source

2008-12-23 Thread Tom DeReggi

Re: [WISPA] Potential Dr.'s office asking about our network and HIPAA?

2008-12-23 Thread reader
Some general rules we followed, when setting up a doctor's office with a
remote access setup...

1. Physical security - all machines behind locked doors. No monitors
visible from any public area. No routers, switches, or ethernet plugs in
unlocked or insecure areas.
2. Network security - We did single IP NAT at his office. He wanted to
tunnel to home, so we set up a tunnel to his home, but it only works on his
specific laptop. He abandoned this, decided to not work at home :)
3. Data security - this they were lacking.. He now transports his data on
files that are zipped with a password, on a thumbdrive that's encrypted with
a password, and his laptop requires biometric authentication to run.

Further, we explained to him that emails between offices were fine... IF
encrypted. So, now they zip and password the communication files they email
to each other.Images, etc, the same.

If you wish to share data between ANY two points, secure tunnels are not
necessary, but the data itself should be secured no matter what else you do.
No communication on the internet should be considered non interceptable,
therefore security starts with encrypting data right at the source.

The HIPAA rules seem complex, but I found some medical consultant sites that
broke it down a little more and it's not all that complex, if you start with
the idea that the data itself should be encrypted ,and the network itself
should be physically isolated and secured. We ran ethernet out to the
wireless cpe outside, but it does double nat with a router inside so even
that segment is isolated from the inside network.

Now, this was a very simplistic setup, to be sure, but the philosphy works
when scaled up and meets every aspect of HIPAA's requirements.

Re: [WISPA] Multi-Mode Fiber Tools - Source

2008-12-23 Thread jp
I'd suggest a class.

We don't put connectors on or do ends. I've taken a class on it, and
it's tedious.

We chop a pre-made and pretested patch cord in half and splice it to
the ends of the cable run. This requires a fusion splicer and
heat shrink sleeves, wipes, cleaver, and a couple different strippers.

Yes. The newer firmwares have inband management support. However, you need a
VLAN aware device to make the connection, as Inband management requires a
VLAN assignment.

Re: [WISPA] Potential Dr.'s office asking about our network and HIPAA?

I believe that HIPPA puts the responsibility on the Dr., not on the
carrier. You, the carrier, do not have to do anything to carry his
data. This was discussed about 1 year ago on one of the lists and the
last I heard, this was the agreement.

Re: [WISPA] Potential Dr.'s office asking about our network and HIPAA?

2008-12-23 Thread Mike Delp
John,

If he is connecting to one of his other offices or providers inside of your
network, then you can set up some tunnels to encrypt his data. If he is
connecting to someone outside of your network, then he has a tunnel from his
endpoint to the other endpoint, and it is encrypted across your network and
also across the Internet. If he has no Tunnel, then he is in Violation of
HIPAA. If he has a tunnel, then he does not need any encryption from your
network. You can transport his tunnel just like the rest of the Internet.
The Internet is not encrypted, and if he is relying on you providing
encryption to the Internet, then he is exposed once he leaves your network.

The Internet is routed, and you can get to any working IP address across the
entire network of networks. There is no bridging on the Internet. That is
how your local routed network is accessible.

If the Doctor isn't encrypting medical-related data with SSL or VPN before
it leaves HIS network, he's violating the HIPAA guidelines. How often does
a doctor use a public wi-fi network to check on charts & labs from the
hospital via a website? The SSL is what makes it compliant, now if you're
talking about point to point (office to office) he may want to get a VPN
router.

his information across our network until it leaves the NOC. How do you guys
do network security? Vlans? PPPoE? What can we do to ensure that we can
comply with HIPAA standards for potential clients like this?

Thanks in advance.

[WISPA] FW: Kernmantle Rope

2008-12-23 Thread Dustin Jurman
But you need to go with what your safety device states to ward off any
liability.

Certified slings usually carries a nice variety of rope up to 2000 feet and
safety devices.

Re: [WISPA] Kernmantle Rope

2008-12-23 Thread lakeland
You are lifting guys with rope and you are looking for the lowest price?

You are lifting them with a man rated hoist right? Because it is the only
federally approved method regardless of what type of safety backups you put in
place.

You are leaving yourself and your company really exposed legally. Not to say
the least what you are exposing your guys to.

A 500' climb is no bif deal to anyone who climbs. Even my fat ass can do that
in 30 minutes or so.

Don't take shortcuts

Re: [WISPA] Kernmantle Rope

2008-12-23 Thread lakeland
Depends on what you mean by lifeline? If you are doing a controlled decend
(repel) you should be using 1/2" Kernmantle at a minimum. We use 5/8". In
addition you are required to have a 5/8" rope grab line (usually
polyester/polypropelene mix) as a "just in case"

When buying Kernmantle look for rope that is a name brand, made in the USA and
preferably meets NFPA standards.

Do not buy any rope made in China for life safety.

For hauling something other than a bucket, double braid (non-kernmantle) is the
rope of choice
