If I use xmail to handle mail from two or more domains, should I use "aliasdomain.tab" or "Domains.tab". I cant tell from the docs. Users are the same. [xmail] SMTPGW and SMTPFWD
I am wondering if there is a way to tell if xmail is actually processing correctly via these tab files. I find that if I put "gateway.isp.com" as the outgoing mail server in Microsoft Outlook, I get mail delivered to gmail. If I put: "gmail.com" [tab] "gateway.isp.com" in SMPTFWD, or "gmail.com" [tab] "@gateway.isp.com" in SMTPGW The mail gets bounced. Same is true of aol.com and netzero.com. [xmail] Re: Dynamic DNS
Thanks for the reply. Haven't thought through it completely, your suggestion might be a nice Xmail enhancement (option for bounced email to be retried through another named relay server). I admit I'm not a email expert but more of a general networking guy, but his sounds like an interesting solution. Looking back through the archives, I found that I am not alone. There are lots of messages from people who don't understand the difference in smtpgw.tab and smtpfwd.tab and don't know how to set them up (I'm still struggling). There is no really good tutorial on relaying and forwarding. That is more the problem than the docs for the tab files. Now that all the big dogs are coming up with clever ways to keep SPAM out, it is a challenge to get mail through legitimately. More and more ISP are refusing to issue static IPs and that is a real problem for business who run their own servers. The ISPs want the hosting business. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David Lord Sent: Monday, April 30, 2007 4:03 PM To: xmail@xmailserver.org Subject: [xmail] Re: Dynamic DNS On 30 Apr 2007, at 8:33, Edmonds, J.B. wrote: > The smptgw.tab is just what I am looking for (granularity). [xmail] Re: Dynamic DNS
The smptgw.tab is just what I am looking for (granularity). I don't know how to tell whether to use "Login", "CRAM-MD5" or "Plain" for the relay server. In debug mode it doesn't show the actual interchange between the servers (or I don't know how to see it, this would actually be useful to log all of it). I also cant tell if its actually working? It doesn't appear to be since the response back is exactly the same once I configured the tab file and userauth\smtp file. It is unclear as to when to use smtpgw.tab or smtpfwd.tab to route outging through an ISP's server. I don't need to route everything, just some domains that block me directly.=20 It would be nice if in the docs that there was a lead paragraph for each tab file that gave its purpose and normal usage. Some are self explanatory and some are puzzling for a guy like me who only delves into this when I have a problem. [xmail] Dynamic DNS
Excuse me if this is a worn out topic but until recently I had no reason to follow this. I am a network admin for a 1500 member non-profit who has run its own web and email server for over 10 years. We recently relocated to a Verizon area in the states that has only DSL available and Static IP is NOT available. We decided to use DynDNS as our solution and it works fine for web services. It works OK for email EXCEPT we cannot deliver mail to AOL, Verizon, Comcast and Netzero customers, as they apparently block dynamic address IP address ranges. If any of you have been, or are in this situation, can you provide me some possible solutions. I have investigated relay via DynDNS and SMTPAUTH but they charge by the recipient and one newsletter distribution a month approaches the cost of having our domain hosted by a commercial provider. I actually considered this option until I see buried in the hosting sites and agreements a disclaimer that they will not guarantee email delivery to AOL and Verizon. We have lots of members with AOL, Verizon, Comcast and Netzero accounts. The obvious solution is to move the server offsite but this doubles the cost of service. Do you have experience with relay service providers and recommendations? [xmail] AOL and Netzero
I know there have been discussions on this subject but I cant find them in my archives. I am getting mail bounced from AOL and Netzero. Appears to treat me as SPAM and bounces the mail. I have reviewed all the documentation and I don't use SMTPRELAY. My users are authenticated via Outlook. Seems to me I remember that there are some setting to be changed or entries to make in a tab file to make AOL, etc play nice. Can someone help me out, or point me to the right place? This past week I built up a new Windows XP workstation and decided to move my Xmail server to it. I am running 1.22 and installed 1.24. I moved or re-created my TAB files, etc. When I went to install the service and run it, I get an error message that the program failed to load. Thinking I had a bad executable, I downloaded the files again and replaced all of the EXE and DLL files in \bin directory. Same error. Doesn't get far enough to generate a log or do anything. I copied the 1.22 "xmail.exe" file and the service starts perfectly. Replace it with 1.24 and it fails. I have not seen any reports from others with this problem. Thanks. Just what I needed. We now deliver less than 10% of the SPAM that used to get through. Put the files into a single dir. I made one called glst, and put it in mailroot. On Windows, don't worry about the database for glst. It takes care of the creation and management of the database. it will be in the same dir as the glist.exe. (Make sure the folder has appropriate write permissions) Its important that you create a regular AT (scheduled) job to run the database cleanup periodically. The glist instructions describe the glist.exe switch you need to use pretty well. Look at the file filters.pre.data.tab, and make required edits so that the data in there is correct for your system. "!aex""X:/path to glist folder/glst" "--mfile" "@@FILE" in order to be recognized, the filters.pre.data.tab must be in mailroot dir. glst.conf stays in the glist folder, but should be customized as you see fit. See the documentation for explanations of settings. Here is our conf file. Thanks to at least three other folks on this list for sharing much of these settings, and making our work much easier. I suspect there is a way to turn it off. Either a registery hack or setting somewhere. Outlook, particularly, is pretty customizable if you know what you're doing with it.
