First show was 11/70 Fillmore East (Joni Mitchell guest appearance),
Most 70's New York / New Jersey / Long Island shows (including 6/71
Fillmore East shows w/ Lennon encore, Carnegie Hall, Felt Forum,
Capitol Theater, Brooklyn College...) and some 80's shows.
A buddy of mine saw some Garrick Theater NYC shows in the '60's.

[Zappa-List] First impressions on QuAUDIOPHILIAc

2004-11-06 Thread Guy

Listening to it merely in stereo, but on headphones.
I was initially disappointed when a previously released track came
on, but I loved the new mixes. I had forgotten how fantastic "Wild
Love" is. "Chunga Basement" is s cool. What an intimate sounding
recording and it also reinforces my opinion of Aynsley Dunbar as my
personal favorite FZ drummer. And Waka/Jawaka has a great mix too...
the horns removed from their doubling of Frank's solo, and his great
rhythm guitar track being more audible. And of course, the words
of "Drooling Midrange Accountants..", as pertinent today as they
were then.
Keep 'em commin' Dweez, but with longer runnig times please.

[Zappa-List] Anybody experiencing distortion on QuA's Rollo?

I get a crackling throughout Frank's solo. I exchanged the disc and
still have the same problem.
Listened through different speakers and it's still there.
I am listening in stereo.
Maybe it's too much quad Z guitar for just two speakers?

No. It doesn't occur between phrases. From the abrupt start, the big
band sounds fine (as does every other cut on the disc). The
crackling starts as soon as Frank does and continues (in varying
degrees) throughout the track as he plays.
DANG!

[Zappa-List] Classical Zappa on NY radio (internet too) tonight 11pm Eastern

2005-03-23 Thread Guy

http://wnyc.org/shows/newsounds/episodes/03232005

...On this episode of New Sounds, hear music composed by the late
guitarist and innovator, Frank Zappa. Listen to some of his dense and
demanding work written for the Ensemble Intercontemporain (and
commissioned by Boulez.) Hear The Ensemble Modern, Zappa's "last
band," from their recent CD of Zappa's works, along with brass
arrangements of Zappa tunes by the Meridian Arts Ensemble. Plus,
Frank Zappa spins Baroque composer Francesco Zappa's classical
pieces
on his Synclavier and the Finnish Ensemble Ambrosius plays Zappa's
music on Baroque instruments.

attempt to post scans of the program booklet (which I've been holding

[Zappa-List] Trying to ID a song

2005-07-09 Thread Guy
It's an instrumental, just two acoustic guitars (FZ and ((I
think)) "Bird Legs Youman").
It starts with Frank announcing the songs key (F) in a rather
exasperated/impatient manner,"e!".
It's a slow number with Frank playing some incredibly beautiful
phrasing and picking until the accompaniest's fingers get entangled
in
the strings and Franks asks "Getting tired?" and the other dude
says "Uh-uh. My fingers got stuck.".
Anybody know the song title and what recording it's on?

Sorry.
I haven't heard the song in years but I thought I recalled that when

musically).

I'm not up on all the Jeff Simmons messages here but.
besides a GREAT version of "Lucille" (my favorite) the rest of
the album stinks (IMO). It's worth having though for that recording.
Zapped is good.

Yes Glen,
it's the same song but done in a great '50's R&B style with cool horn
arrangements and searing guitar playing.

Hey folks! Where we at on this baby?
Or would anyone just like to make me a copy?
I have the Fillmore program from this show and I'd be happy to post
scans of it, if and when I finally get a copy.
Thanks.

"Is this to inquire about the status of the vine or who has it?"

Yes, status.
I know I was left on the list (after whom I do not know).
Since this vine may have disintergrated, would anyone care to burn
copies for me. I'd supply postage and blanks and can provide scans
of the original Fillmore program too if you're interested.
MOOOAH!

[Zappa-List] Wild Man Fischer documentary film "dErailRoaDed"

2005-11-04 Thread Guy
Opened yesterday in Manhattan. From a review in the NY Times by
Stephen Holden:
[Not everyone who watches this sad, disturbing film with its flashy,
animated embellishments will agree that what Mr. Fischer does is art,
whether outsider or any other kind. Some of the most extravagant
claims on his behalf come from Mark Mothersbaugh, the lead singer of
Devo, who compares Mr. Fischer to van Gogh. The dreaded word "genius"
is trotted out. Be assured, there's no sign of that.///
"One thing you've got to remember is that he actually is a wild
person; Larry is dangerous," Zappa declares in an old interview. Their
relationship ended when Mr. Fischer, in a rage, hurled a bottle that
barely missed striking Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit.]

[Zappa-List] My review of Mich.U's Joe's Garage Vine dvd

2006-02-09 Thread Guy
It's scarey trying to be a "critic" here ("...people that can't write,
writing for people that can't read...", not that that's this bunch of
folks here, but you know the quote and what I mean about me not being a
a "qualified"reviewer), but here's my take on what I've seen so far.

These students certainly get an A for effort and for their choice of
material. And kudos to the responsible parties in the school
administration for allowing them to put this show on!

I dug the "mixed media" aspects (stage and video and live music).
The band was really quite good and pulled off some decent covers of the
tunes ( Joe's Garage, Cathlic Girls, Wet T-shirt Night come to mind),
but when the lead guitarist attempted long solos...well, look what he
was going up against. He shouldn't have tried.

I'm not a big fan of "interpretive" dance. I thought the choreography
was pretty poor (in fact, it looked like I choreographed it. If you
knew me and my attempts at dancing you'd know what I mean. It was that
bad.) But give me seven or eight attractive young ladies dancing around
in short plaid skirts and white knee socks and I'm happy!
Their Lucille can mess my mind up any ol' time!

I think the production values cheapened (not in a good way) by the Sy
Borg segment. I have a feeling a different production designer took
over at that point (or they just ran out of money). When I think of
what could have been done for "...a magical pig with marital aids stuck
all over it,... wires, pliers, tires...", and what they ended up
with,...geez, not even a "...little leather cap and trousers..." for
Gay Bob.

Well anyway...

That's as far as I got watching it.
Hope you liked my little "review".

[Zappa-List] Re: New To Group with Questions-

2006-03-20 Thread Guy
Just a little "Zappa/Varese" sidenote.
At a Carnegie Hall show (don't remember if was the Mothers or Grand
Wazoo), a buddy and I gave Frank a Varese LP at the start of the show
and Frank said (something like) "Ahh, Integrales and Ionisation. Very
cool. Thanks for the album." He handed it off to Bald Headed John who
stayed very close to Frank as we approached the stage.

[Zappa-List] Re: Frank Zappa/Grace Slick?????????????????????????

2006-03-24 Thread Guy
The show with Joni's appearance was my first FZ show (Fillmore
program scans in photos section). As I remember it, while reciting
this thing about Penelope with the band playing one of Frank's
beautiful two chord vamps behind her, Joni said "...I fuck the
sea.", then started some nice harmonizing along with Mark & Howie as
Frank soloed over it all. I'd LOVE to hear a recording of that show!

[Zappa-List] Felt Forum with Bianca?

2006-03-24 Thread Guy
My buddy and I were reminiscing about some old shows we attended and
he said that the NYC Felt Forum show where Frank brought out a woman
named Bianca to do some singing, was one of the best FZ shows he had
seen. I have a vague recollection of Frank coming out in a long,
black, straight hair wig and saying he was "Cher Bono Allman".
Is there a recording of this show to be had?

Thanks very much SOFA!
I've looked at the Orphaned Vine List and I've searched a bit but
haven't been able to find it.
Does anyone have it handy and would they like to send it to me
and/or start another vine?
I'll keep poking around in the mean time.

Thanks to all for the replies and efforts.
The show I attended (with Bianca) was the 31st.
I'd be interested in aquiring both (but definately the 31st).

[Zappa-List] Re: VO Felt Forum Halloween '76 - update

2006-04-03 Thread Guy
Re: the "Cher Bono Allman" quip...
I was at a couple of Halloween Felt Forum shows so I'm not positive
it was the '76 one. Sorry to get you all worked up ;^)
My buddy remembers the '76 show as being a great one (in his humble
opinion) so I'd like to get him a copy regardless of the quality.
I shudder at the thought that we may know the knuckleheads yapping
throughout the whole show (I pray it wasn't us).
Thanks for all your efforts on this!

2006-06-02 Thread Guy

[Zappa-List] Re: Please wait VO - Zappa Halloween QuAUDIOPHILIAc DVD audio discs burned to CD Audio

2006-06-04 Thread Guy
That's understandable and reasonable Jim.
I do own these and have been bothered that I can't play them
anywhere other than my livingroom.
So I'm OK with keeping it to other A-DVD owners just looking to dub
to a different format for convenience.
If I recieve these, I'll follow that path.

[Zappa-List] VO Halloween and QuAUDIOPHILIAc cd format

2006-06-07 Thread Guy
These two DVD-AUDIO DISCS converted to cd.
Vine offered to purchasers of the original DVD-A discs seeking a more
convenient format for listening pleasure.
This is offered on the honor system. Honor thy MOTHER(and thy father
too also)!
This offer is also dependent on approval by board mod. Ya mine SOFA?

was plenty of room. This will be a Zappa List exclusive ;-)

one direction for too long; sometimes it’s as if they’re moving
in all directions at once. There are hints of jazz-fusion and
psychedelia, along with Zappa’s beloved doo-wop. They even make a
brief stab at the Turtles’ "Happy Together" as part of the groupie-

[Zappa-List] Re: VO: MOI Fillmore West 11-06-70 (Audio CD)

2007-01-07 Thread Guy
Disc received. Thanks John K.
This is a great show (IMHO) and the audio quality is superb.
Vaudeville shtick notwithstanding (whatever the fuck that means), I
love this era of The Mothers, and George and Ian and Aynsley and
Frank and even Jeff play great here. Too bad it ends prematurely. I
saw them one week later (11/13, my first Frank show) at the Fillmore
East (photos of program are in the photo section here) and I
remember the audience not responding at all after "Penis Dimension"
and Frank getting pissed and walking off stage and being
cajoled/pushed back out on stage(by Herbie Cohen?/Bill Graham?).
Anyway...
I'll send this out to John G in Kansas in a day or two.
