I've reinstalled mandrake 9, and now the modem works; however, the symptom (being able to surf for awhile, then for some odd reason not) remains. This happened with Redhat 8 as well ... I'm testing an old machine with Mandrake 9 -- it has an ISA internal 56k modem, and DOES NOT have that symptom..
