[I have missed that comment somehow]
Anyway, now the problem seems to have disappeared - I was using compiz without
the window list in the meantime, and I think there were several updates in the
meantime. I have removed debian-menu (along with the menu package), but this
doesn't seem related to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-get source gnucash
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cd gnucash-2.0.0/
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ patch -p3 /home/aleander/Desktop/Changeset14761.diff
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dch -i
[modified the version for better synaptic experience :]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo debuild
[after some time...]
That was just an upgrade related to some big library change. If I
understand correctly, the bug is upstream and would require UVF
exception or something similiarily nice.

There's only one thread in gnome-panel. I have identified gnome-panel as
the exact program, but it's the window list applet that causes the
slowdown [disabling it causes the problem to go away]. I attached a gdb
session to it and made several backtraces while the gnome-panel got
slow. A new note:
Oh. Sorry for long reply times - the bug is hard to reproduce, sometimes
the window-list works correctly for many hours and sometimes it starts
to get flaky after 30 minutes, and I still can't see how it is connected
with what I do on the machine.

Gnome window list causes gnome-panel to eat
Can this possibly be related to Bug #55462?

Doesn't seem so. I know that bug and I have used a workaround mentioned
in the comments (I have menu-xdg installed).
When I strace -p the gnome-panel and switch workspaces I see lots of
open(/usr/lib/X11/locale/common/xlcUTF-8.so.2, O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)

I don't know if that's a new bug or something exposed by installation of apport:

bonobo-activation-server crashes
The problem began around the same time as the bug Bug #56118. I am using
mail-notification with evolution, which may be the source of the
problem.

Oh, almost forgot that lspci -nvv doesn't report verbosely the vendor and model
(it's possible to check that, but I can submit it anyway):
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 UART (rev 01)
That's the wifi card installed on Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop, type 0768-31G.
