I've recently done a bit of work on that, with a very recent version,
you can set IS_LAPTOP=True at the top of powermanage.py. This is a
workaround to allow powermanager to run, even if HAL reports that the
machine is not a laptop (in which case it exits by default).

I cannot reproduce this problem here. Changing the password, and then
trying to use this in a new shell does work here. (Note that you have to
open the shell you try in after you close userconfig, otherwise PAM's
caching apparently still has the old password.

S3 might be OK for LiveCDs, but I think HAL should disable hibernate on
the LiveCD. It does not make sense for individual applications to decide
whether hibernate is available, this really needs to be done in HAL,
