GORGEOUS. But the over-run of long names, however, destroys all that
work that went into making it look so good in the first place.

As for enlarging the login box dynamically… We've had a very
reductionist apporach to the login experience. Minimalistic layout,
alignment with Unity, no user pictures. There's richness to the
behaviour though – the login carousel moves vertically, in other words,
it's all on rails and very stable.
Out of curiosity, looked into how Mac OS X Lion handles long names and
it turned out that they're rather inconsistent…

As another example see Facebook - my name is "Robert Ancell" everywhere,
but in the URL it is http://www.facebook.com/robert.c.ancell i.e.
robert.c.ancell. It has to be this because there are limitations in
what can be in a URL, but it wouldn't make sense to show
"robert.c.ancell" anywhere in the
Mika, the short name is the username of the user - it's a short word
used to uniquely identify the user. It has a limited set of characters
allowed, baically a-z, 0-9 and _ or -. (i.e. no spaces or non-latin
characters). This is entered at user creation time, see the User

Would it not make more sense to dynamically enlarge the width of login
box if the user has a long name?
Just a suggestion - sorry if I'm being stupid.

Thanks for your insight Chris, very useful!
Sorry I misunderstood your surname with middle names. That highlights
the fact that in in general we have a number of people with double
surnames (like Rhys Jones, Kamstrup Erlandsen, García Rodríguez)
depending on language and culture.
Shortname is a

Right, this is an interesting bug to resolve!
Depending on the width of the login box there's a limit on how many
characters we can display in the name field. Thus, some sort of
truncation and/or abbreviation mechanism is needed.
Chris, how would you prefer your name to be treated in such case? I
