If you are taking about the metapackage dovecot-postfix the answer is
yes, the package will integrate dovecot sasl server with postfix for
SASL authentication, by default will work for local users.

I'm attaching the patch for this issue. As for SMTP-AUTH, dovecot-
postfix doesn't allow authentication over unencrypted protocol. So,
telneting to port 25 won't give you anything, but you can try this:
openssl s_client -connect localhost:25 -starttls smtp
and then run ehlo hostname.

Public bug reported:
the installation of dovecot-postfix inserts '/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -c
/etc/dovecot/conf.d/dovecot.conf -n -m ${EXTENSION}' into main.cf of
the postfix config file as the 'mailbox command'. Unfortunately the
config file location that dovecot defaults to is
/etc/dovecot
This should be fxed for lucid. Thanks for the bug report.

chuck

That's a spec to try and take this integration simplification further.
Unfortunately neither Ivoks nor myself ended up with a lot of time to work on

Well, not everything is there, but:
-postfix that will do that
automaticaly, or they can even have dovecot-postfix with their own
changes in separate configuration file (exactly the same as apache2 or
amavisd-new)
Commit 67:

I agree. Not dovecot/postfix related, but the extra dhcpd.conf (in a different
directory!) for the ltsp config is a major source

Just my two cents... I would agree on the confusion part of the extra
dovecot-postfix.conf config file... It's an attempt to make the servers
more user friendly, which I'm not sure is needed... if somebody wants to
