Derrick May & Eclipse in Lansing last night
Before I became known as a DJ, I was known for being a good dancer. Back in the days of Detroit's own Music Institute, I use to enjoy dancing to the sounds of Derrick May because he didn't just play records. Instead, he created music with music. He created rhythms with pre-recorded rhythms. When I arrived in Lansing, Michigan last night, I had no idea that Mr. May was going to take me back to those good old days. Simply put, DERRICK put on (what we as DJs use to call back in the day) a clinic, and schooled everyone on how to properly bang out some techno. He made me want to go out and buy at least 3 records that he played last night. Not just for the records themselves, but rather in the way Derrick presented them. It's the way a DJ presents the music to the audience that makes the difference. I use the Bill Cosby classic example to illustrate my point ... imagine that you are in a restaurant waiting to enjoy your favorite meal with all of the trimmings and side dishes that make your mouth water in anticipation of what delight your tongue will soon enjoy. As the wait staff approach the table with your dinner, you can smell the pleasant scents of this delicious meal. However, when the waiter or waitress places the meal on the table, you discover that your delicious meal has been served to you on a garbage can lid. The question now is, do you still feel like eating? How can you eat after that? My point is this . . . YOU CAN OFFER THE VERY BEST, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT'S THE PRESENTATION THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE! Too many times, DJs play some of the hottest tunes, but still don't move the crowd. Why? Because the music itself cannot stand alone. If this were the case, why pay DJs at all? Clubs could save enormous amounts of money on just playing CD compilations all night. When you go to a party or club event, you expect to hear great music. You don't expect to have it presented to you on a garbage can lid. Last night, Derrick showed how to properly SET THE TABLE and SERVE THE MUSIC to a HUNGRY audience! I watched & listened to Derrick's set at the DEMF, and on that summer night he certainly showed the world why he is a world class DJ. Last night, Derrick showed a 1000 people in Lansing why I use to dance all night to his sets at the Music Institute. The only other musical highlight for me was watching & listening to Eclipse bang the box! Again, it's all about the presentation. I've seen Eclipse do his thing several times before, but last night he was certainly at the top of his game. Great set last night fellas! Way to bang `em out Detroit style! Many thanx & much respect to my friends & fans of the LANSING CREW who made me and my friends (TONE & TRACKMASTER LOU of SCAN 7) feel so welcomed last night! peace & respect, TP p.s. No disrespect intended to other DJs, but just because you can scratch and / or possess other turntable skills doesn't necessarily mean that you can rock a crowd. It's all in the presentation! By the way, I hope someone recorded these sets last night!
who stole the soul?
Okay so Friday night, Motor Lounge, Richard Humpty Vision played and there was reportedly a capicity crowd. Saturday night D Wynn played and there's was like 300 people, tops. What's going on? Re: [313] Q about Detroit, Richard Harvey...
Actually there are no specific "anti-rave" laws like Chicago's, there's a draconian police force though. Although enforcement is very inconsistent, depending on what precinct the party is in, who happens to be patrolling that night, and whether or not the Chief of Police has a hard on for parties that week. He's been pretty busy fending off calls for his resignation lately, though. I just got booked to play a "rave" in Detroit, but I hear that there are very tight "raving" laws there. Any input? Also, is Richard Harvey really Ritchie Hawtin? I ask this because when I was listening to de9 on that new Microsoft player, the whole first half was either Ritchie, Richard or Jeff according to the track titles on the player... thanks, darw_n "create, demonstrate, toneshift..." http://www.mp3.com/darw_n http://www.sphereproductions.com/topic/Darwin.html http://www.mannequinodd.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Also, is Richard Harvey really Ritchie Hawtin? Nope. And there's no 't', BTW.

Greetings Earthling... THE PARALLAX CORPORATION PRESENTS: -COCADISCO II- The South-West of Holland, just another day in the year 3000. Cocadisco, the new and improved formula. 313: Did anyone else see Derrick May tonight?
Hey all, I am finally home and starting to chill out, but, call me a sheep or something, but I am still in awe of seeing Derrick May tonight at the Electronic Music and Image Festival in Lansing. My year has probably been made, because I was able to see Derrick spin in such a small venue (the sound was good, and he was only MAYBE 6 feet from me). The weather was great, and he played a great set in my opinion. He started with some old school, into some jazzy detroit house, back to old school, and then some seriously beautiful tracks at the end. Every time that I can see the man play Strings of Life, I know that I will be having a smile on my face for a long time. I suppose that I am biased in rating this event, since Derrick is my all time fave-DJ, but I certainly hope that somebody else on this list saw his set, and thought that it made for a great night too. Re: [313] some toneshifting tracks...
the automobile is the most hideous acoustical environment. the bass people hear is the bunching up of sound nodes which can't escape the small space- especially if you use the trunk as a speaker cabinet - thanx.H.A.L. May collaborations
Strings of Life by derrick was also co-produced by Carl Craig. Just for the record, Carl Craig co-produced "Strings of Life '89," not the original cut. -d
