points have ever been made made, i'm with daniel's comment on this one (and
you know, in Denmark he has a radio show with 100.000 listeners every

ben sims is ok -imo. I recently downloaded a ben sims
live from fuse mix and it was decent. He just gets a
lil weird towards the middle of his set. sound like
dropping a bunch of ol and trancier tunes for a bit
but I guess thats just his style? I didn't really dig
that stuff. After that little segment, he played all
of his tracks.

5 DJ’s that have influenced me the most:

1. Jeff Mills
2. Richie Hawtin
3. Claude Young
4. Derrick May
5. Andre Guette (New Orleans)

By the way, I have noticed that many of you have mentioned Derrick Carter as
one of your top picks. I picked up a street tape by him about four years
ago in Chicago called “Dialogue.” In my opinion, it was one of the best
works that I have heard from him. Unfortunately, some guy in Miami decided
to borrow it (very long term) and it was the only copy I had. If anyone has
this tape, please e-mail me privately. Thanks. Alex. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

2000-10-07 Thread Phonopsia
It would seem Christian and I are obsessed with this contest. You have to
admit it's an awesome idea. And if this isn't the essence of the 313 lists I
don't know what is. We're sharing (musical) ideas about some of the best
artists in the greater Detroit scene.

This just in, the first people to review Redux 4 (Christian's newest remix
on acidplanet) and my remix (Groove Nonsense) both gave us 5 stars. I could
very easilly work on this for the next month solid at this rate even if it
will all belong to Plus 8.

Yes, it helps to know about musical structure before embarking on mixing -
how otherwise can one distinguish beats, bars and sections?

- wut? you actually just need to be able to count.

 Although I
haven't produced for a long time, I do gladly DJ. My original training is
classical (piano, various recorders) and some jazz (saxophone, piano), plus
some serious muso record listening, which means sitting around with your
mates and picking your favourite music apart into its minute details, such
as structures, sound textures and vocals/solos (never mind where the
samples come from) And that helps enormously in developing one's DJ
skills, from researching and shopping, to programming and the technical
aspects of mixing.

Re: [313] best dj???

2000-10-07 Thread Kent williams
You know I started to do the 'best DJ' thing and then killed my message,
for two reasons 1) since I work with a promoter and we book a lot of these
people, I don't want to leave anyone out, and hurt feelings. 2) I don't
really think that beyond the level of pure competency, DJing is such
a personal expression, that it's like ranking Van Gogh against Cezanne.

And it goes without saying that Mills, Hawtin, TP, Claude Young, etc are
at the top of the game.

But there's a whole slew of people who aren't as notorious, who are just
as good, arguably better. DJ Bone? Omigod. As Eric would say: OUT COLD.

In no order as well Twonz,Derek Plaslaiko,Traxx,Boo Williams,Ken Maier,
Carl Maier, Dietrich Schoenemann, Carlos Souffront, Kelvin Larkin,
T1000,Rolando,KHand.

And the best of my local posse are right up there. The fact is that
talent don't come with a pricetag -- the pricetag comes from marketing.
Justone bangs it, Mary Cuddahy bangs it, Moonrakker kills, DJ Alert is
arguably the king of the cold jackin Iowa DJs, Justone kills, Ryan Burn
rocks, Meshuggah is dope, E Dubble kills. and my best girl DJ Miche can
rock her living museum of vinyl like no other. Not only are these people
good -- in a perfect world they'd be playing at Tresor and the Rex too.

And for anyone I missed I'll namecheck you next time.

Susanne Brokesch is responsible for Sähkö 10, the (very spartan) Sil
Electronics : Tal-s 12" from 1995. She then released a brilliant album
on Disko B in 1997 called "Sharing the sunhat". Very minimal, with
unique textures and a lot of acoustic sounds, a richer sound that builds
on and improves her earliest recordings. This is a fantastic record and
comes highly recommended. She also made a soundtrack for a fashion show
by Sabotage Communications related designers Fabrics last year : this
was released as a 12" on Ego Vacuum - www.fabrics.at.

NO i didn't resample or outside edit ANYTHING for the first three tracks. i
don't know if you can do this with the express version of acid, but in the
big version at least there's volume envelopes ;)

btw. i like cubase a LOT more too (too bad version 5 is S unstable :( )

Acid Sucks but I like +8

2000-10-07 Thread Phonopsia
Well, having never used ACID (ahem) and never having done a remix I decided
I'd give it a try. I usually write all my music from scratch, and Cubase is
about 10,000 times more friendly than ACID, but I think my maiden voyage was
a moderate success. Of course I could be blinded by 6 hours of staring at
this damn screen too...

Check me out as Phonopsia at http://www.acidplanet.com

Song's called Groove Nonsense. Kinda in between techno and house. Call it
what you will. Maybe it's hard house?

2000-10-07 Thread Jorge Velez

Just listening to the various remixes of "Never Tempt Me". (Tresor 132)
The second track (Flowing Mix) by Thomas Fehlmann has its points but I
still

like the original best. Anybody have any comments about the CD?

If you're referring to the insanely slept on and badly (non?) promoted
SKYNET album, I personally
think it's mostly an awesome piece of gorgeous funky, melodic, deep techno.
Granted, a couple of the tracks feel like exercises

in "repeating the groove", but even those have a strange kinda
charm. I think it's one of the most slept on techno albums yet,
and it pretty much matches, and often surpasses, M500's DEEP
SPACE in its grooviness,

cheers,
j

Well this is pretty cool...like drexciya much? The first two tracks
tracks are a little off kilter rhythmically which is an acquired taste.

Terrorista is my favorite so far. Electro with what sounds like severe
abuse of a noise reduction plugin...

Catalysm is a nice electro track, kind of Aux88-esque but a little
more sinister, nice messed up vocal samples.

Someone with some cool gear at work, or better at exploiting their
computers than I am...
