Re: [313] mispress
Mispresses mean that they pulled out the wrong metal mother for one side or the other (or both). You can't press an already pressed record on one side, as was implied. No wait a second, I have gotten old disco records in which there was a new track laid onto an old disk. The disk was grinded down on a side with an old track, and re-used. Now how they did this is beyond me, It would seem that the record was etched as opposed to pressed... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.mp3.com/stations/clevelandunderground http://www.mp3.com/darw_n http://www.sphereproductions.com/topic/Darwin.html http://www.mannequinodd.com

Yes, can i can't wait to see the video of the ad, surely ford could make a downloadable version. It is a shame that Juan does not have a website. OK, this may sound a bit weird but, one of my favourite 'non 313' techno tracks would have to be 'Fokuz' by 2000One on (steffan robbers) eevolute records, i just had a look at the Ford Focus banner ad at the FOX site and i saw the words 'focus 2001 which reminded me of that track. http://www.eevolute.com/eevo003.html anybody else remember that track, it came out in 1992 (and i finally managed to track down a copy a couple of years ago)? Suburban Knight
Well it was quite a great set, quite a lot of old material was covered through his very zany mixing style, starting with some New Order - going through some classic UR, Red Planet to early Tresor stuff and even dropping some classic electroesque ala Cybotron, Aux 88 and Fix. The crowd was quite small but dedicated. And who can ever forget those wild facial expressions whilst he was in the mix. My highlight was when he played Seawolf, followed by Nocturbulus Behaviour. Huge sound for a relatively short guy, James Pennington really rocked the floor here in Perth last Saturday. Don't miss him if he plays around your neighbourhood. One other Q I have is - when was the last time he played Detroit? How often did he play...? A_Zed
mispressed Barada CD
hmmmeveryone's mispressing stories seem to center on vinyl, but I have a copy of the Barada album Strategies for Deeper Design which is some rock'n'roll stuff of bad quality, and it's not just a matter of the wrong CD put in the wrong case, the CD even has the Barada inking on it. This CD was released through Virgin so I assume it's one of their acts on the CD. Tosh
mispresses
Yeah, I just got the forthcoming Blake Baxter 'Dream Sequence III' EP on Tresor, but I think it's a mispress. Instead of any decent house or techno, there are just three incredibly predictable, plodding and dull disco-sampling tracks on there. Oh, hang on a minute...

To come to think of it: is that even possible when mastering is concerned??? Or was I dreaming...? That's quite possible, if the spiral groove of the first track are spaced wide enough, you can fit a second spiral inbetween. NSC can do it (X2 technology), for instance: in the last two years, there have been several EPs The Swarm, Suburban Knight - Nitestrike on UR, Gerald Mitchell's Groove within a groove on 430 West, an Ectomorph release on Interdimensional Transmission, etc. I've heard that there are also one or two EPs on the French Poumtchak label that have it, but I've never seen those ones. IMO it's very nice from a technical achievement point of view, but to spin it, it's a bit unconvenient, not to mention downright disastrous when the needle skips in the middle of a track :) Otto
Mixing speeches and music
Peace.. I just wanted to know who started the tradition of mixing speeches with music, in particular, the Martin Luther King speeches, I know Felix still does it, but who was the first person that started the concept? It also reminds me of when I used to mix some of the Holy Ghost tracks, they have very nice spoken samples and breaks in the middle of the tracks..which make the mix very interesting.. Re: [313] Mixing speeches and music
Well, Frankie Knuckles did it a lot, as did Ron Hardy, but Tyree is largely credited with kick starting a movement with it when he found some records in his mum's collection of speeches by a preacher in Chicago and started absolutely caning them. I suppose Frankie Knuckles is the originator, though. yeah that's Thomas Brinkmann. it's on his Max Ernst label, i believe there are quite a few of these. max ernst is the heavier(sounding) counterpart to the Ernst label. the Ernst stuff from what i've heard is way more chill, all of the Ernst records are named after girls. there are lots of them too, i think one for ever letter of the alphabet actually. IMO this stuff is excellent, buy on site! hope this helps:) -Original Message- From: Waiter, James [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 05, 2000 2:50 PM To: '313@hyperreal.org' Subject: [313] brinkmann 12 i picked up a new 12 with no info on it except for the marking max.E 6. the guy at the store said it was thomas brinkmann, but does anyone have any more info? track titles, label, etc...? thanks, jim - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] the creator
I have the original (or at least the oldest copy that I know of) of the Jack speech on a sample record from around 89ish... But I *think* it sounds exactly like that guy who did the poetry at DEMF after D.May... any confirmation on that? I always wanted to know the story behind the Jack speech... darw_n create, demonstrate, toneshift... http://www.mp3.com/stations/clevelandunderground http://www.mp3.com/darw_n http://www.sphereproductions.com/topic/Darwin.html http://www.mannequinodd.com - Original Message - From: Sakari Karipuro [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jose bello [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, December 05, 2000 8:19 AM Subject: Re: [313] the creator On Tue, 5 Dec 2000, jose bello wrote: who is the creator of this words ? in the beginning was jack... RE: [313] Gemini
He had at least two EPs on Peacefrog, Hibernation has a blue and red cover, with slower, slightly darker techno tracks, the other has a purple and green cover, contains the track A Blue Night, and is more of a house-meats-dub in the world of Gemini techno script. Hope that makes some sense. All of this comes from memory @ work, so I may own others that aren't coming to mind. If there's interest, I can try to start a Gemini discog from the approximately 10 records I have of his, but I doubt that even begins to skim the surface. His set fluctuated between Deep house and tech-house. I also have a couple of his releases on a label which I can't remember at the moment. They are sort of on the Trip-hop tip: some really mild repeating vocals, and kind of ambient minimal music behind. Decent records.. If anyone is interested I can look them up and give you a more accurate description and review... Re: [313] weird pressing tricks...
Both track's grooves were cut side by side so it looked like a normal track. You never knew which one would be playing if you dropped the needle on the record. Isn't that how Apollo by Jeff Mills is? I remember listening to a record back in 92 where there was literally 2 different tracks cut into one side like it was a one track! Both track's grooves were cut side by side so it looked like a normal track. You never knew which one would be playing if you dropped the needle on the record. To come to think of it: is that even possible when mastering is concerned??? Or was I dreaming...? Proffit _ Get more from the Web. Re: Mixing speeches and music
I just wanted to know who started the tradition of mixing speeches with music, in particular, the Martin Luther King speeches.. I came across a reference to a Label in NYC, Paul Winley Records - label that released: Africa Bambaata's death mix live, super disco brakes 1-6 and 'Sweet T' Winley, Paulette Winley, Ann Winley, harlem underground band (George Benson), Zulu nation throwdown etc..which you can still find for sale online. This label released music and speeches of allegedly bootleg nature (i.e no payments to artists). Apparently Bambaata and fellow DJ's of the time used to mix MLK speeches over the music they was playing..so this go's back to the 70's at least and it's fair to say that the Chicago and Detroit DJ's (certainly Frankie knuckles) would of seen these sorts of DJ's at that time. Last week i came across a reference to Paul Winley store in New York (the same rundown shop as featured in David Toop's 'Rap Attack' (published way back in the early 80's - reissued last year as 'rap attack version 3'). Apparently he and his daughter still sell records out the front of the store on the sidewalk! Dave P.S.: i bought that Frankie Knuckles 'Choice' collection of his favourite tracks, including my fave - Nick Straker Band's 'just a little bit of jazz', who was the DJ at the DEMF that was using two copies of this record at the beginning of his set?? - that sounded cool!.
