Jupiter Jazz????
First of all my best wishes for the new year to all 313ers. I'll post some of my London experiences later because I'm still way too tired to think clearly. UR rocked, that's for sure! Found nice records and hooked up with some really interesting people, but more about that later. Wanna hear some Jupiter Jazz? Check this out! http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/cassini/acoustic/ John aka the very tired technotourist
Re: [313] Beautone - Farben
From what I know, Farben = Gramm = Jan Jelinek. Berlin-based producer who has released: 4 eps on Klang Elektronik as Farben; a great album on Source Records called (personal_rock) as Gramm; and a 12 on Pole's label Scape called Tendency. One of the best of the best currently pursuing the abstract minimal/glitchy techjazz sound, IMHO. yes. correct. the farben stuff is great, indeed. heard him play live in cologne @ @ popkom this year. very serious show. haven`t checked his record on scape yet, but all the others were excellent. (especially the farben/klang stuff. i think i read somewhere that there`s gonna be a track of him comming out on background aswell, among with dean decosta and somebody else i don`t remember anymore. rob roy
Re: [313] London record stores
Thanks to babydiddy and others for the record shop suggestions. I've been to about 15 over the last few days (couldn't make it into Smallfish because they were closed last Friday), but my faves were: 1. Vinyl Junkies, the owner J-P (Jean-Paul, I think) is originally from France and quite a character, The only place that like American stores lets you preview new and used right off the wall and the boxes. (Just about every other shop in london I tried, you either couldn't listen to anything, which is the policy with the used record areas; or you have to request the staff to pull records off the wall or the store play-copy box. A fair bit of Detroit stuff tending toward both the KDJ/Moods and Grooves vein and electro. Lots of jazzy UK house, including very good back catalogues for quite a few labels (I finally got a listen to most of the Shaboom releases I've missed, for example). 2. Music Video Exchange, which has the best second-hand/throawaway bins. No listening stations but there are plenty of good obvious picks. I think there are four of these now, and everyone agrees that the one in Camden Town is the best. In general, I found record shopping in London to be a chore. , and it gave me increased appreciation for the good American stores like Record Time, Tweekin (SF) and so on. phred
RE: [313] London record stores
Same here: thanks to the guys helping me out with the record stores. I found the prices of new releases to be a bit too high with the exchange rate being really high for us poor Belgians right now. As Phred said I also don't like the fact that you have to ask for the records before you can listen. I usually take a stack and start listening. The Music and Video Exchange stores saved the day. The Camdan one is very good, but so is the one on Notthing Hill Gate (Hi Johny!) where I found Drexciya on Warp. I paid 15£ for it, a figure I normally never would pay for a record, but this was a worthy exception. Other recs include: extra copy of Gravitational Arch of ten (crazy about that track!), Themes from Vapour Space, Public Energy: Slumber (two bad copies at steep prices! :-( an old Bandulu, From Our Minds to Yours 1, Garnier's Shot in the dark, Justin Berkovi: Charm's Hostel, Orgue Electronique, Mistaken Identity, K-Hand etc. Sorry, can't think right now, mind is blurred and I'm starting to get ill just like my girlfriend is right now. Does anybody know who Mistaken Identity on Synewave is? It think it's The Advent. Cisco also releases under Soul Destroyaz on that label, but the Mistaken Identity sounds awfully Adventlike if you ask me. John out P.S. How's Amsterdam Phred? Did you catch your connection in Brussels. I saw you had about four minutes to catch it... Thanks to babydiddy and others for the record shop suggestions. Re: [313] UR in London, how was it?
Personally I thought it was all very disappointing - a real let-down - and my review in the February issue of Jockey Slut will reflect that point of view, which seems to be shared by everyone I've spoken to, both at the event and since. Anyone else? That said, it was really nice to hook up with some people from the list like John O and his illin' girlfriend (whose name I forget because it was so late), Otto Koppius (inserting CD now...) and Rob Needham. Also good to see Nick Craddock and Alice again. Missed Rob Webb and quite a few others, though. But don't go calling me no Londoner! ;-) - Tom MF Well, speak up Londoners. Tristan
RE: [313] Detroit techno isn't techno?
I spose everyone has their different ideas... Looking back in time the origins are blurred. It doesn't really matter anyhow... What characterises the detroit sound?.. What does detroit techno actually sound like? I prefer music to be a stew of influences, which everyone interprets differently and creates new offshoots where their own ideas and mentality come into play... Techno probably doesn't necessarily have to be electronic... what is techno?... I assume it's possible to make techno without using electronic instuments(?). What is music anyway? Where do you draw the line between music and just sound and noise? Nick (Dj Pacific:) --- Sean Deason [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: yes Virginia, Detroit Techno is very funky! reminds me of a conversation I had with a girl at a bar couple weeks back. she was trying to explain to me the difference between techno and electronic music i couldnt seem to get my head around what she was saying (to me techno *is* electronic music) since she obviously knew more on the subject than I ever would she was adamant that techno meant hard/harsh/fast and that electronic was more pretty/musical/ambient sounding. I finally conceeded to her superior knowledge on the subject. learn something new everyday. I've had numerous conversations like this where people explain to me what techno is or isnt and explain to me why the rest of the world is so much more clued in to the whole techno thing than Detroit is :^) guess we just havent caught on yet. -sean -Original Message- From: ab [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 28, 2000 9:37 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Detroit techno isn't techno?
