OT: name the chicago electrodiscofunksoul classics

2001-02-27 Thread .: Caltrop :.
while listening to an old chicago radio dance mix, I noticed that there are
a bunch of really good disco/soul tracks with an electronic edge.

any recommendation that would fit this description?

my fav song at the moment (maurizio clone)

2001-02-27 Thread meta elpH
Hi, just wondering what your favorite song is right
now. If it's in mp3 format let me know where to D/L.
I'll tell you mine:

I like Maurizio (who doesn't) and so I like all the
Maurizio clones. There is this dude, Dick Richards
that has a superb track. I love it! It fits right in
with Maurizio's work. It's called Output 1-2. You
can get it at

http://www.notype.com/drones/singles/043/

Anyway, he also has stuff on mp3.com. Not that his
other stuff is bad, but this song is his best, forget
his other stuff. If you like Maurizio, then check
Output 1-2 out.

Peace.

discussion about this track came up on this list a coupla weeks ago.
essentially, it would seem to be v.similar to Terrence Parker's Love's Got
Me High (from the Tribute ep on Intangible), except that Taxicab hasn't
got the vocal samples from Love's... and the rpm of Taxicab is about 1/3
greater than Love's

the Tribute ep was repressed fairly recently, so you shouldn't have too many
problems finding that one. Taxicab is on a 12 by 2 Brothers and a DAT on
a label called Jackin' Trax. i think someone commented (Ani, with info from
Mike Huckaby?) that the 2 Brothers record was more than likely a bootleg and
isn't readily available, so you'll have to scour the 2nd-hand racks for that
one.

as for the sample which features heavily in both tracks, someone (Mr
Deliverator?) said that it came from an early 80's funk/rock band featuring
one of the geezers from Living Colour.

i managed to get a copy of this from Inner City (cheers Paul) in Leeds.
it's certainly an interesting one and i'm not sure what to make of the
a-side track. the vocals sound kinda heavily pitched down, which is a shame
cos i think the idea of a Stevie Wonder vocal over a BC style track had got
some potential, and the pitching down really spoils Stevie's vocals. if
anyone wants a copy give Paul a call cos i think he has some left, and i
also know that Pelicanneck in Manchester have had it in too.

and talking of unexpected vocals over another track, had anyone heard the
Girls on Top 7 - Being Scrubbed / I Wanna Dance With Numbers. one side
has the vocals from Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody over
Kraftwerk's Numbers, and the other side has the vocals from TLC's No
Scrubs over Human League's Being Boiled. bizarre, in a good way.

They played lots of Italo disco with the typical mechanical early 80's
sound, but that's not really soul, so I guess you could be referring to
early 80's soul/R'n'B that had that electronic edge.
Sorry I can't help much without soundclips, but I bet lot of the small dance
labels output from the EARLY 80's (pre-84) have the qualities you're looking
for, analogue synths, 808 drum patterns and such...

There's just so much, tons and tons of good (or outstanding) stuff that the
WBMX posse/Chicago scene played in the 1980s.

RE: [313] Tha Mills thang

2001-02-27 Thread Ryan Brogan
I thought hpdj didn't play office parties in the US anymore.

I remember the old days in the coffee room behind hp dj's cubicle. That
place was a sweatbox by 9 am.
hpdj used to bang it all day long, except when someone used him to write
faxes or check emails etc.

There was this one time, however, that hp dj got a Melissa-virus and started
playing backwards goa- trance and mixing it with various factory windows
sounds, that was a wild one..

Now everyone just gets high in the office, plays with glow-sticks and
listens to the copier..
