I've spent the whole afternoon listening to synth pop, and then I just went
back to the site where I listened to the Dave Gahan interview from February.
I then listened to the mp3 files again. I was wrong. It must have been the
Isolee effect. I often don't like some of my favorite music the first time I
hear it.

It would seem I'm pulling a psycho ex-girlfriend on 313 today.

Great...& Vogel's on there too! You can stack your Moby cd right alongside ;) I
notice that Slater hardly reserves his best material for Mute (i.e.
Plantetary Assault Systems). Doesn't that tell you something? Perhaps I was a
little harsh (just saw 'Almost Famous' & was inspired by the portrayal of
Lester Bangs...now there was a man with integrity). But there's no way you're
going to escape criticism in my book when you're a company with a bit of cred.
doing deals with the devil, and laughing all the way to the bank. I wonder who
the joke is really on?

Anyway, let's take it off-list. This has only a tangential relation to
Detroit techno.

Right. I'm absolutely witholding judgement for the album release. But I can
safely say there are a few songs I really won't dig.

I can definitely hear some Mark Bell influence, particularly some Nording to
a few of the tracks (they're using the Nord Lead 3). But you're right that
there's a notable absence of his influence throughout. It's not as obvious
as Homogenic or Dancer in the Dark.

I thaught bringing this back was pretty cool to it also had a line in it
that went "I thaugh you went to the party?" and right looped party for a

Why Can't Synth Pop Adapt?

2001-03-25 Thread Phonopsia
I've finally gotten around to checking out the mp3 files of the new Depeche
Mode album at http://www.depechemode.com/news/releases.html and I'm not
really blown away despite Mark Bell's input. There are four or five tracks
that sound good, but they are the ones that remind me most of their older
material (think: Music For the Masses or Violator instrumental moments).
Some of the stuff that sounds new makes David Gahn's voice sound out of
place IMO. Even the remixes struggle to fit his voice in a newer cotext.

For me this raises the question: where did synth pop go wrong? I haven't
really been happy with any of the output of the one-time kings of the genre
like New Order (I know they aren't exclusively synth pop), DM, Pet Shop Boys
or Erasure since maybe '92-'93. Even the efforts from that era sound today
like they were struggling to keep up with the times. There have been obvious
exceptions to this, like some really good remixes of the Pet Shop Boys,
particularly from Mark Kinchen, Deep Dish and DJ Pierre, or Thomas Fehlmann
remixes of Erasure. But why is it these talented musicians can't seem to
adapt on their own, or in the case of the Pet Shop Boys and Erasure, have
moved towards trance? Perhaps trance is today's synth pop, but in the 80s
they weren't as formulaic about it?

The thing that makes this most confusing to me, is that there is a
renaissance of sorts for 80s music, particularly in Germany. But you also
get Ersatz Audio putting out some strongly 80s influenced music in Detroit.
There is clearly still an interest in this music. Hell, look at Carlos
Souffront's set @ DEMF. Did any track go over better than the New Order he
played? I think Derrick Plasaiko about jumped through the ceiling when he
mixed it in. :)

I know it's good that the synth pop musicians of the 80s haven't continued
to repeat their earlier efforts. I'm just wondering why they've adapted in
the directions they've gone. I suppose the Pet Shop Boys and Erasure are
still making music for their audience. What they're doing is pretty in line
with gay club music. Was there not a time when gay club music was not all
candy though??? I think Depeche Mode may be struggling to adapt more than
them. I just wish I could really like this music, and it isn't clicking for
me. A lot of the elements don't seem to work together. Notably, the
instrumentals sounded quite good. Before the flames come: I think it's
generally accepted on this list that this music was crucial to the
development of techno.

Maybe this is something that happens with all music? Some of the key players
eventually "fall off". Maybe you could extend this question to industrial
music too?

Re: [313] do you remember?

2001-03-25 Thread dj revolver
i'll have to agree with kyle - i expected some harder , darker techno but to
hear rich play some funky tech house and even disco house (hatiras' space
invader) was pretty inspiring to experience as a dj. rich's set had
beautiful flow all night and he is the master of creating break downs and
builds ups with the use of mixer eqs and effects. flawless mixing skills
were demonstrated and the crowd ate up every track he threw down. i'll have
to say that was probably the best show platinum has had to date and the best
thing to happen to windsor (musically) for a long time not to mention it was
nice not having to drive more than 5 minutes to get to the venue.

the vibe:
as i eagerly approached platinum i first noticed a large m-nus symbol
hanging from platinum's outdoor rafters blowing in the wind. when i walked
in to the ever so familiar platinum i noticed right away that it had been
transformed into a plus 8 event with the parachutes hanging low on the
upstairs floor. and it was great to see john acquaviva up high in the newly
constructed, all silver, metal dj booth smiling, spinning and drinking.
while i only stayed upstairs long enough to order a couple drinks, it was
long to here john throw down some cool old school disco tracks. as my wife
and i walked down the stairs to the lower level we noticed that the couches
were replaced with bass bins and the room had never sounded so great. it
was extremely dark, warm, and smokey and from the back of the already jam
packed dance floor you could see rich's bald sillouette and black glasses
glowing above the red, smokey dj booth. as we found our way to the vip
lounge rich was spinning some really nice minimal, almost dubby techno.

the vip lounge:
my beer buzz was strong and to hear phat beats made me feel even better.
the vibe was cool back there as rich would laugh with some of his friends
during record changes. m-nus' technical wizard steve had the adat machine
recording rich's entire set (i'd love to get a hold of those tapes). the vip
room was dark and had a platform in the middle to sit on and there were some
candles lit. there was a small room with access to the bar to the right and
some couches elevated on a platform to the left hand side. as i hung out
with some old friends and got caught up on past events i saw some familiar
faces such as theorem, christian smith, magda and more. troy robinson
(platinum's owner) looked very satisfied every time i saw him as well.

we decided to leave about 0430 and were already satisifed with everything
we've seen and heard as rich was starting to play some old acid tracks.

great job m-nus/plus 8 crew. another event well planned out and windsor
thanks you for coming home.

RE: mixing problems

2001-03-25 Thread armin holzgethan
just do the beat-matching with that part of the track that has beasts,
then go back to the intro and drop it at the right moment ... most
intros start on the first beat of bar 1 ... then make adjustments by
listening to the overall rhytmic feel...if there's no explicit rhytmic
element you'll have to work with the strings, pads etc (they're all
rhytmic too) to marry the two tracks ... knowing your tracks helps.
... that's if you really want to mix the intro. personally i'd skip it.

consumers know what this actually means?

I would think that anyone who knew enough to think someone an "amazing dj"
due to the "flawless"ness of a mix would understand what digitally mized means.

Isn't it all about the resulting product and it's effect on the end-user,
anyways? Whether you mix vinyl, cds, or tracks on a computer, realtime or
previously recorded... isn't it about how it sounds in the end?

Wasn't there a similar argument made by traditional musicians when
synthesizers first started to pop up(same for drum machines, etc)? A
general "they're cheating" attitude, or something to that
effect... Eventually, I think it all distills down into how the final
product sounds, not as much how much skill (talent and creativity yes,
skill no) and good timing and luck it took to get to that point.

It's the "misrepresentation of talent" part that bugs me... a djs job is to
choose tracks, combine them into a set, to the end of creating a
synergistic piece that entertains whoever listens. It's been shown that it
doesn't require vinyl, or even cds. It's the human ideas and creativity at
work behind that process that is the special, unique part, and that will
exist as long as there's people out there willing to listen, computers or not.

Oh, no. Has the http://www.psychoexgirlfriend.com meme caught on this fast?

Curious to know more.

do you remember?

2001-03-25 Thread Kyle J Dupuy

i saw hawtin & acquaviva last nite at platinum in windsor. the venue
looked really good - decked out with black sheets & parachutes. john was
spinning upstairs for a couple hours, playing mostly funky house.
after acquaviva finished up, clark warner took over. rich
went on downstairs about an hour after doors. he continued to spin for
the next six hours. hardly played a single banging techno track - mostly
stuff on the tech house tip. even though i didn't get to hear any hard,
evil techno which i so love, i still thuroughly enjoyed his set. i
thought the crowd was really nice too.

"what were you doing?"
"who were you with?"

-samples repeated throughout the set, in an eery female voice,
and distorted with effects. added a very nice touch.
