Re: [313] Re: ~scape releases (was: Re: [313] in an attempt...)
Sorry for the extra post, but I've just discovered that the [komfort.labor] presents ~scape/Pole mix album is actually on WMF RECORDS. Wes
Re: ~scape releases (was: Re: [313] in an attempt...)
The Pole mix album is on general release, even saw a stack of copies in one of the dear ol' HMV stores here in Tranna today. Apparently, it took Betke 6 months to get right, & is based on the kind of sets he lays down in the back room at a Berlin club called WMF where he has a residency. I don't have the listing handy, but it includes tracks by Vladislav Delay, Maus & Stolle, Kit Clayton, Low Res, Cinematic Orchestra, Flanger, Farben, & Pole himself. An absolutely stunning, innovative mix. The Clayton at Mutek one is a one-off promo-type thing that a friend of Betke's slipped me. Heavy, trance-like (in a good, gamelan orchestra-type way), industrial-strength dub klickery, with lots of extraneous crowd noise that adds to the tribal feel of the whole experience. I like it better than the Monolake/Clayton live set I recently heard here, mainly because he crams so much into 45-50 mins. or so. It never lets up... That said, Henke & Kit's live show really built up over the course of 2 or more hours until it was absolutely flying. They were running abstract, sound-synched/triggered video from their macs onto the wall opposite their live set up, & kind of improvised/took their musical cues interactively from that. The audience could choose to dance, stare at the performers, or stare at the projected visuals. Worked pretty well, I thought. The random, free-floating visuals often seemed related to the beautifully 'textured' images that grace Imbalance/Monolake album covers. As you pose the questions at present, it's really way too broad for anyone to give you advice but what *they* would do - and that's not very helpful for deciding what gear to get or where to move. Different scenes offer different things. For my club going $, I would say Chicago and Detroit are the best places to be. Also, you should do some independent research, find out what you might like about the distinct creative processes of DJing and production. DJing for me offers immediate gratification, and production is more of a sustained satisfaction - for what my $.02 are worth. Both require years of dedication to hone the crafts and both are very rewarding endeavors. I recommend talking to local DJs and producers to get a feel for their thoughts on these crafts, and see if any of them are helpful enough to encourage your growth. A few words on email from people you haven't met are inherently going to be less valuable than personal contact and hopefully some mentoring and guidance with one-on-one contact. Once you get that ball rolling and get a feel for your specific interests and needs you may want to post the gear question to 313TechKnow. Subscribe here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/313TechKnow There's also a good list for DJ & production advice, etc: Amtrak DJs. you can find more info here: http://www.amtrakdjs.org I know that L.A. has a DJ school called Mixxbox or something like that, which could be helpful. I am presently involved in a similar effort in D.C., opening in a few months called Metatrack Studios, where we will offer DJ clinincs, one on one lessons and seminars, recording/practice booths and prodcution facilities/instruction. This is a new world at the moment, and very exciting for me. Many of us, particularly those of us raised on the DIY aesthetic have taught ourselves - but there's a great opportunity to offer guidance, pointers and excelleration of the learning curve without reducing the effort to formulaic drivel. If you can find a studio like this in the area you decide on, I encourage you to feel your way out in an area like this before committing to expensive equipment purchases. aspiring producer need help
Hey everybody, I have now reached the important-life-decisions time of my existence. Graduation will be upon me in a couple short weeks. What next, I've been asking myself. Well, to be honest, I realize for the most part that my academic career has been spent engaging in studies that don't relate to my true artistic passions. My love for techno/electronic music grows by the day as does my desire to be a part of it all. My creative fires need to be stoked before I let life suck away my energies (a phenomenon which I know for a fact to be a reality). So, two important questions: 1. What locations, preferably American, should I be narrowing my focus on? I need a place that has a well-established techno scene and a supportive artistic/cultural atmosphere. Always need something to do, you know? FYI, I'm considering moving to California with my best friend, who has applied to USC and Cal Arts for film. Any key cities out on the west coast? 2. What kind of gear should I consider acquiring? Hardware or software? Which pieces of equipment or programs, specifically? Why? (Let me just add that I would rather work with physical, tangible equipment rather than sit and fiddle with a mouse, but it will all boil down to possibilities, capabilities, and potential.) Do any of you recommend the DJ route? Just so you know, I'm currently into banging, minimal techno (a la T-1000 and Richie Hawtin) but do also have a love for deep grooves and controlled chaos (a la Carl Craig and Claude Young). I would appreciate any feedback and insights any of you can give me. Be aware that I don't plan on following anyone's advice to the word, but I really need some guidance now. I don't want to make any serious mistakes. Plus, my own ignorance seems to make itself known on a daily basis. Thanks guys. I hope to be among the ranks sometime in the not-so-distant future. Look at Cybotron's Rick Davis. Where is he now? You see a lot of the people that co-produced tracks or that had a great deal of influence disapear into obscurity. And it's a record like Nude Photo we're talking about here, one of the first records that came out that you could call Techno, so if Barnett indeed had a part in the record, then he has a part in Detroit Techno history... Re: art vs. get rich quick scheme
Whoa, this is a little out of hand, and quite off the mark... First off I suppose I should have made myself a bit clearer... I was more referring to these guys DJ sets more than their tracks... They all tend to just bang away, and my personal preference, (not saying it's the only way, just the way I like) is a DJ that at least in some way takes you somewhere... Not just pounding through an hour of your life Yes the question records are good, I have them all... But Carolla doesn't play like that live... Or at least I have never heard of him playing his deeper slower stuff... My remarks were in response to the idea of these guys not being at the DEMF and I was commenting on their DJing... I love and play alot of those guys tracks... I'm not necessarily knocking all of their production work... Especially their more recent stuff where they have expanded into more than just compressed minimalism... DJ wise they do tend to have the same style/sound... Except maybe Gaetano As far as insulting my understanding of the vibe of harder/experimental techno styles, you are just way off the mark... I was heavy into Beyer, Parisio, and the like between the years of 96 and 99... But after a while I just started hearing the same record over and over again... So I started to listen to some different stuff and went back to the classics and more material coming straight out of Detroit again... My knowledge and record collection as far as the Swedish and Italian scenes is quite extensive... I think you may have jumped the gun with your attacks... And as far as the disco house comment... You are just killing me... Yeah i like house that's deep, and some of it has disco samples in it, but look at my Carl Craig collection, or my great admiration for Aril Brikha's work, or my old school freestyle collection, or my Herbert collection that spans the gamet of his work, or my love for latin jazz... Don't make me laugh trying to Pigeon-hole me into one type of music is rediculous... The get rich quick aspect of it came from the idea that they were releasing new records at a rate of almost twice a month for some time that sounded the same as the last almost... I understand that that was their genre, and their thing it's cool... I wasn't making a personal attack on their character, just an observation... Sometimes people on this list are so touchy... I was not attacking you or your tastes, just making a few comments... - sb One Ear to the Ground Communications http://www.totheground.com (Coming Soon!!) AIM: sbtotheground
Recording Hawtin set...
er...its kinda piracy and all, but Richie Hawtin will do a 2hr mix on UK Radio One tonite... Is there a way to record it on the computer?? 90 minute tapes or 80 min Minidisc is a pain in the arse.

LA 313ers
For those in LA, Stacey Pullen is playing tonight at the Hollywood Athletic Center. Also I got handed a flyer a few weeks ago for a small ritzy LA club night called Motion that has Juan Atkins listed as a rotating house (house as in jack not as in resident) dj, has anyone checked this out? His name is given equal weight to local djs so I wonder if the promoters of this night even have a clue about Juan's past ? Just wondering. Hurlbot
Music + math
Honestly, if you're really good at math, and that's your thing, you could probably handle some more fundamental programming environments for music. I know there are books out there that teach you to build music objects and program sequences in C code. If you're familiar with C and are good at math you could probably do well with that. One level up are graphical programming environments such as cycling '74's MAX/MSP bundle. As I think of it, the way you're going to be applying numbers to create music may be different than the way you're thinking about it. Rather than looking into applications of the numbers in a traditional composition environment, you might find that you are applying your knowledge of higher math to programming sound structures and constructing sequencing environments from which you can compose and manipulate. One list that may be good for this is the microsound digest I belong to. Don't read it that much myself, but people on the list do work with numbers (some). Also if you haven't, check out Cycling '74 's web site for info about the MAX and MSP programming environments. Peace- DBIT
On-Line MP3 Mixes
In addition to the sites already mentioned, I would like to add: http://www.techno.cz/ Tons of stuff there. My fav is the DJ Mary tech-house set (it's actually a bunch of chain reaction stuff). http://www.713tekno.net/ I downloaded several 2 hour mixes from here. I actually found 2 hour sets from Claude Young, Surgeon, and Marco Carola! But they changed their site and I didn't see them the last time I checked. http://www.adapteri.com/betoni/ Just went there the other night to get the Osm mix. Good luck, elpH. __ Do You Yahoo!?
