Well, given that there were several of 'em at Grooveriders in Encino last

Greetings all,

for those in the cleveland area, Lance still works at bent crayon on friday
evening's, and sometimes saturday morning. John @ bent crayon is a walking
encyclopedia of music as well. I can't tell you how many killer records both
of these guys have tipped me off to over the years. They're both really
great people.

Oh, and there's the Soft Ballet Forms remix of "No One Lives On Mars" too.

Re: [313] Andrew Duke...?

2001-08-01 Thread Michael Taylor
Last I spoke with him he was making some changes in his personal and
musical life. Cognition lost its syndication awhile ago, which is why you
have not heard anything from that show lately. He is still doing a local
show and running a local college station, which is what is taking most of
his time these days.

He has also been concentrating on his own music again. I got a promo cdr
earlier in the year, he is doing dark ambient material. Lance McGannon
praised it when it was making the rounds earlier in the year. Andrew will
also have track on the next issue of Masstransfer.
http://www.masstransfer.net/

I think he and Lance both ran into the same situation. You work your ass off
at something because you love it, but you get very little financial reward.
Time passes, you get burnt out and you need to start making money...blah
blah blah... It is a shame for these lists because both of those guys
contributed so much information. I think the level of education on the lists
has gone down because of the fact that Lance and Andrew are not pointing out
articles or giving 30 release discography info and reviews, followed by 5
artists who you should check out if you are into a similar sound. There are
still people contributing, but it is not like it was.

Either way, Andrew deserves props because he worked his ass off to bring
this music to people who would not have heard it, and to better inform the
people who already had.

Take care,
mt

Re: [313] mekka cancelled?

2001-08-01 Thread Craig Stodolenak
Too much, too big, too fast.

Was the ticket price too much of a shock, the timing too close after Area:One,
was it that people don't care to support a greedy corporate empire such as SFX,
or inadequate promotion that spurred the abysmal ticket sales and abortion of
something overpromised and underdelivered? We'll likely never know.

Sure things aren't. They've learned that now. Hopefully they'll abandon
agencies like SFX in the future and direct their attentions to smaller one-off
events; perhaps more success will be forthcoming and all this talk of caring
and community they belch will actually exist instead of huge corporate
interests and mega (or should that be mekka) dollar signs.

Yes. Too much, too big, too fast -- too bad.

Your right Jayson Baby Ford's work would have had absolutely no influence
what so ever on Detroit and it's early producers. (Insert cutesy character

Re: [313] Titonton/John Tejada/Pieter K in Los Angeles next Tuesday Aug. 7th

2001-08-01 Thread P Swope

From: "Phonopsia" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

A local DJ was spinning before me Saturday and said he had a new record
(dubplate I believe), that was drum 'n bass and co-produced by John Tejada.

John Tejada is friends with several drum n bass djs and producers. He did
mention that he has been making more of it lately. He also has two LPs in
the works for deFocus and Immigrant Records.

Regarding the deFocus material he recently performed a lot of that material
live at the El Rey in Los Angeles. I've only heard two tunes off of the
Immigrant LP and one of them was really incredible!

Could be the same collaboration, or just a rumor?

He has many collaborations planned. He and Titonton have another single
planned. And he might be working with Tom Withers
