RE: [313] Larry Levan
The SalSoul CD contains tracks from the SalSoul catalogue only, and it's an unmixed CD. 1. "I Got My Mind Made Up" Instant Funk 2. "Handsome Man" Sparkle 3. "First Time Around" Skyy 4. "Double Cross" First Choice 5. "The Greatest Performance of My Life" Loleatta Holloway 6. "How High" Salsoul Orchestra 7. "Make It Last Forever" Inner Life There's an equivalent CD on WestEnd, but of course, the tracks stem from WestEnd's catalogue only. Also unmixed, called "Larry Levan's Classic West End Records Remixes" 1. "Heartbeat" Taana Gardner 2. "Serious, Sirius, Space Party" Ednah Holt 3. "No Frills" Taana Gardner 4. "Dont Make Me Wait" New York Citi Peech Boys 5. "Lets Go Dancin" Sparque 6. "Is It All over My Face?" Loose Joints 7. "Work That Body" Taana Gardner 8. "Give Your Body Up to the Music" Billy Nichols 9. "When You Touch Me" Taana Gardner Not to be confused with the "Live At The Paradise Garage" mixed double CD, which features loads of tracks from various sources (see http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A3z320r8au48n for a list). A pretty good historical document if you ask me, but I prefer Levan's production to his mixing skills (mind you, in those days the tools were much more limited, and the tracks were much harder to mix. But still, guys like Knuckles and Farley seem to be much better at it, judging from the deep house mixes page archives.) Hope this helps. sqrrt -Original Message- From: Maarten Baute [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2002 3:17 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] Larry Levan Dear 313ers, I have the chance of buying "larry levan - paradise garage" on sal soul records. if you mean "Larry Levan's Paradise Garage" on Salsoul, just take it. not one track of it appears on the West End release. "Handsome Man", "First Time Around" & "How High" are my favourites. armin Maarten Baute schrieb: > Dear 313ers, > > I have the chance of buying "larry levan - paradise garage" on sal soul > records. Re: [313] yellow magic orchestra
Just to reiterate, I strongly suggest checking Hosono's SFX and Philharmony as well as Technodelic and Technodon - the lattter is quite a brilliant record and largely overlooked except by the most rabid fans...perhaps because it's quite hard to find. jeff At 09:17 AM 1/3/2002, .: Caltrop :. wrote: ah nah, the self titled one is my favourite. yes, it's cheesy, but that's also why i like hotbutter's 'popcorn', he he. along the lines of the first album is also Ryuichi Sakamoto's first solo lp "thousand knives" "solid state survivor" is also a great one.pretty much a follow up. Re: [313] yellow magic orchestra
well, of course, 'least favourite' still means that i like it very much as i'm definitely a ymo fan. and i also like their 'cheesy' stuff, 'rydeen' on 'solid state survivor' is my favourite ymo track, btw some of sss (e.g. rydeen) is on the us / euro pressing of x infinity multiplies it's just that all other lps work better as albums anyway, to put it right, the debut is also a very nice record i don't wanna miss in my collection, and, anyone else out there who thinks that ymo have only put out good albums. haven't heard technodon however. [313] NYE @ Plastic People
I had one of the best NYEs I've had for a long time this year at the Plastic People event. We arrived around 10.30 at the small venue, where we relaxed with a beer, listening to the Maurizio boys playing old dub for an hour or so, then headed to the big venue for the rest of the night. Arrived at Planet 2000 around 11.45 and after checking out the (very impressive) venue we saw the New Year in to the sound of Pharoah Sanders playing an epic drawn-out performance of 'My Favourite Things' to an incredible reaction. Then wandered around for a while, checked out Weatherall playing dub and dubby techno with Adrian Sherwood which was good fun, but the highlight of the night for me was Norma Jean Bell's live set. Very very impressive - she had the crowd in the palm of her hand - singing, playing soprano sax, working an MPC and playing keys. She was flanked by a guy on percussion and a guy behind a bank of Rhodes/ synths/ MPC who i assume was Ayro of Omoa/upcoming Jazzanova remix fame as they performed a full live version of 'Let This' (from the Omoa sampler) in the middle of the set - can anyone confirm this??? They finished with 'I'm the Baddest Bitch' - quality stuff. We then checked out Dego and Charlie Dark playing broken beat anthems (Afronaught's 'Transcend Me', P'Taah vs Opaque's 'Crossings' etc) then Theo Parrish playing some classic Detroit techno ('Strings of Life', 'Good Life' etc) then Gilles Peterson playing dusty old hip-hop and funk. Very good night all in all - lovely venue, not too crowded, well organised, nice vibe, amazing music, good fun... [313] Plastic People at Planit 2000, London
Went to Plastic People and my night revolved around 3 acts that I wanted to see (see below). The club itself was very well run and spacious and the staff were friendly. 1) Pharoah Sanders After a long soundcheck, this started pretty badly. The sound was muddy and I think that they were not used to playing to a cheering (!) crowd and so played louder to compensate. The sound improved as did the band and Pharoah looked like he was more into it (he looked pretty gruff at the beginning). The last song was truly memorable, because the band were playing to their abilities, and everyone was clapping along to a call and response carribean style number. Should have been on earlier (12 'o' clock was a bit muted) but overall a success. 2) Moritz and Mark (Rhythm and Sound) These were annexed off at the Plastic People club down the road which meant a bit of effort getting to it. Quite a let down! The place was empty and Mark was putting on (quality) dub in quite a disinterested fashion. It looked like they were having a nightmare. They should have had a room in the main arena, but they weren't exactly exuding the happy new year vibe, nor playing any of their own productions. Jolly nice people, though. 3) Theo Parrish By this time I was looking for a dance! Theo Parrish came up with the goods with a 110 bpm (I estimate) set throughout which came off through his own enthusiasm and innovation. This was the first TP set I have witnessed and, sure enough, disco, funk, acid house all came into the mix, along with a brave 5 minute spoken word poem (I would guess at it being Saul Williams) about the serious things going on in the world at the moment. A cheeky, vivacious personality. All in all, an interesting musical night. -- Warning : The information contained in this message may be privileged and confidential and protected from disclosure. Jeff Mills, exclusive London NYE at Mass, Brixton ... with clips from his film project. Unforgettable and not too expensive! Do check out the 'Lost' parties if you're ever in London. My biggest problem though, when I go and see techno, is getting anyone to go with me! Can't always even convince my girlfriend that it will NOT be a night of shrill atmospherics with fearsomely deep and loud beats ... Techno has a poor name in the UK. RE: [313] NYE letdown
It was like that all over. The nightlife industry(bars, clubs, restaurants...) got hit pretty hard this year. The last few years they have been getting great turn-outs because of the 99-00-01 hype and a good ecomomy. The 90's are finally over(vibe-wise, to me at least) and the people with money seem to be holding on to it pretty tight these days. I know of a lot of bars that have been selling out of NYE presale tickets well in advance for the last few years, and this year they did not sell even half capacity. I would have gone to porter street because the line-up was off the hook, but it was so expensive. Why spend 35$ when you can have a few gin & tonics at home with your friends and listen to your own record collection? I have a feeling that I am not the only person in town who took the alternate route for NYE. all the party people are old and boring... ;) mt WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE PEOPLE WANTING TO PARTY? was it like that at other clubs across the city and country? -sam _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
