Re: [313] Shari Vari Release Schedule
Hello, I am glad to say that I got promo's of this from Keith awhile back. Definitely a release to keep an eye out for. I think the best track on there is the Strand Remix, but then again Mike Grant's Mix took it into a totally unexpected deep house direction, and as usual, Adult can do no wrong. I can vouch for Keith's mastering problems as well. I put three loonies and all the tone arm weight on the A and C sides and the needle would still not track. He is not the only guy in town who has been having problems with an un-named mastering company. It is a shame, because it is definitely a worthy release and it should have seen the light of day sooner. [313] Current 01.05.02 [e2-e4 album feature]
Hello, Last week Current did a feature on Manuel Gottsching's seminal 1984 release e2-e4. After an inspiring tour as guitar player for Klaus Schulze , Gottsching recorded this album in one pass in his home studio on December 12th 1981. Shortly after completion, a tape was send to Klaus Schulze. Three years later Schulze decided to start his own independent record company, Inteam, and in 1984 e2-e4 was released for the world to hear. Although this recording is 21 years old it does not sound dated in the least. A work of inspired minimalism, this recording provided part of the conceptual basis for the work of modern producers such as Carl Craig and Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel. The second hour of last weeks show was used to play this seminal recording in it's entirety. Also, I would like to take this time to mention that Alan Oldham will be making an appearance on Current on 26th of January. Alan will be in the studio to discuss his new project The Sexy Adventures Of Orietta St. Cloud. We will also be discussing the dance music industry, the state of Detroit Techno, international dj'ing, and life in general. Alan Oldham always has interesting and provocative thoughts about life and music. This interview will be both entertaining and informative, I hope you will join us on the 26th. RE: [313] Shari Vari Release Schedule
well for the new years weekend we (Renegade Rhythms) brought out Mike Grant and Scan 7 they played on the 29th and the 31stthe first gig was in a small club with about 150-200 people me and one of our other dj's warmed the party up , mike grant played like an hour of mellower stuff then lou played live for a little over an hour .. after that mike grant finished it up with a nice techno set.the gig on the 31st was a private invite only house party which took place in a basement.my brother opened it up with some nice techno then lou played for like 30-40 minutes he was having some technical problems , i think it was his midi cablesthen mike grant finished up with a AMAZING 5 1/2 hour set starting with some harder techno, ending with DEEP grooves . i really was amazed with lou he was non stop assault when i saw him in detroit he played with like 5 guys , it was just him this time DIRTY ASS RAW DETROIT TECHNO...i loved it. but i must say that mike grants 5 1/2 hour set was just AMAZINGit just kept going and going , never losing his groove. i am not lying 5 1/2 hours and not a dull moment , i just love his style. it was one of the best new years in awhile for me .. here in portland we like DETROIT HISTORY OVER DETROIT HYPE and we got it.as always much love for the D Michael Mitchell www.renegaderhythms.com --- Patrick Wacher [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey Michael, Just wanted to get more info on the Scan 7 gig you put on. That company has a lot of history in the D and a lot of friends ... but despite that I doubt they've ever really made a great deal of money so they still more or less master today as they've always done ... It all comes down to (someone) needing to put their money where there mouth is, rather than merely waxing lyrical (excuse the pun) about Detroit and it's excellent, highly-credible and sincere mastering company (which has pioneered at least one feature on vinyl, which I've never seen anywhere else before) and doing nothing to stop it sliding into oblivion. -Original Message- From: Frank Zappa [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 5:27 AM To: Mike Taylor; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [313] Shari Vari Release Schedule yea, i have heard that most peoples promos have some sort of technical problemlot of them skip . my brothers copy does some strange stuff in the middle of the ADULT mix, it like cuts out and has this real frazzled out sounding part.i on the other hand lucked out completly my copy playes GREAT no problems no skips. and yes i totally agree with you, the STRAND mix is so good! can't wait to hear the gigolo mix. My first thoughts were similar, that it was OK and no more, but repeated listening gradually changed my mind. I think it needs really careful attention to be appreciated fully, but now I've come to the conclusion that it's really good. It's all in the detail, basically, and a step up production-wise, too. TOM I heard an advance of the album last week, and sadly this could be said for the whole thing. RE: [313] Shari Vari Release Schedule
The technology for making records has not changed since the 50's. Digital production techniques are making it difficult to maintain fidelity when transferring to vinyl. People are not making tracks that will sound good on records anymore. I was fortunate enough to hear about a 2 hour discourse (almost a rant ;) about the subject from our nameless masterer. I think he may have a valid point. He feels that a lot of digital production techniques (stereo expanding to the point of no return, certain wacky effects, we know what they are, etc.) sound great when listening to it digitally on our computers and CD's. We have to understand that there is much more room to play in the digital domain. Not so in records. Again, these are all his thoughts. I won't go so far as to say that this may have caused the mastering problems, maybe the equipment is antiquated, I don't know. I'm just trying to give perspective from the horse's mouth by proxy. I think he has been pretty frustrated as of late and he did go on and on about a project he was working on that he could not tone down enough to keep the needle from doing its own dance on wax. No idea who he was talking about, I pretty much let him vent :) My favorite quote in the 2 hours: People like Mike Banks know how to produce a track to sound good on a record. Classic. I was fortunate enough to hear about a 2 hour discourse (almost a rant ;) about the subject from our nameless masterer. I think he may have a valid point. All you have to do to make it sound good on vinyl is this: 1. No out of phase frequencies below 200hz. Basically, keep your bass mono and panned center. You can check for this if you listen to your track in mono -- if the bass gets phasey or fades in and out, you're doing it wrong. This is the main cause of record skip, as out of phase bass will result in a shallow groove at an extreme of the left to right travel of the needle. 2. Don't overdo high frequences -- above 16khz. While vinyl records can reproduces frequencies in excess of 20khz, if they are too loud relative to other frequencies, they tax the ability of the cutting head to move far enough fast enough. 3. Don't go over 12 1/2 minutes per side for a fixed-pitch lathe, and roughly 14 minutes for a variable pitch lathe. Once you go past those time limits the track pitch gets smaller and you literally cut at half volume. 4. It's helpful to make your tracks mono-compatible, which means to go easy on stereo expansion, stereo flange, etc. Listen to your tracks in mono and make sure they don't sound weird. Vinyl has a lot more channel cross talk than digital audio, and really out of phase material will sound fluttery and hollow due to partial phase cancellation. A lot of producers don't bother to learn these basics which aren't rocket science. The biggest problem is the high-frequency overload, which I think comes from people being half deaf from too many loud nights in the club. I know that Keith and the other people working on the Shari Vari project know how to produce tracks that will sound good on vinyl, so I don't think that they are the problem here. My favorite quote in the 2 hours: People like Mike Banks know how to produce a track to sound good on a record. Sure. Because Mike Banks is a good producer, period. Scott i got me the The Other People Place on Warp after some hesitation and now i'm glad i did. it's very moody, if not melancholic, deep with polished sounds, no harsh sounds or raw drexciyan funk here. all tracks are very tracky and repetitive, always rather laid back, never aggressive, setting a mood rather than telling a story. but they never get boring, some catchy vocal samples and small breaks keep them alive. a very economical approach. almost all used elements sounds are widely known and not original, yet the tracks themselfs sound totally new to me. i like to play them with older more minimal larry heard stuff (on Gherkin for example, or Big Bang Theory). the transllusion stuff is similar afaik, maybe with slightly more electro aggressiveness. welcome to the digital age (at last). armin - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
