Re: [313] FA: ebay spam (Shari Vari 2x12 White Label)

2002-01-15 Thread phono_funk
Look, we need to put all this selling promos stuff into perspective
here. The techno music business is such that its a good thing that the
record is in circulation and not, god forbid, thrown away or hidden in
someone's collection, not getting any needle time. At least its out
there for people who want it. If the guy is selling the record on ebay,
how much money can he really make off it? A couple bucks? Ok, ten
bucks at the most, for a record that is about to be released which
according to the guy, had purchased it himself. Its called a free
country, its called a free market.

Besides you NEVER include promos in your overall sales. Its an expense
labels have to pay to get their music out to the audience 'free of
charge' and not to mention, when given away it becomes the property of
whoever it is given to and they can do as they please with it. If you
don't want people to sell your promos, then don't make promos.

This is one of the things that bugs me about Detroit/or techno people.
Its not a million dollars at stake here. Take a chill pill.

Like I said even though I have pet peeves doesn't mean I don't have a

Very true, but you're refering to the big time music business there.
They allocate more copies for promos than the techno labels so they may
feel tthe need to keep account of them sent out as promos. On the other
hand, since we see em' in the store bins, it show us how much they
really care at the end of the day. I figure the reason they put that
stamp on there to insure the stations would play them and not sell them.
Perhaps techno labels need to start putting that same stamp on their
promos and it makes more sense because of smaller budgets.

Not that it makes a real world difference, but nearly all the promos we
get at my radio station say this promotional copy is the property of the
record company and must be returned upon request. But I frequently find
the duplicates in the record store's used bin. :)

Try as I might, I can't see the problem here. The guy's paid for the record,
so it's his to do with as he likes: sell, give away, review, use as frisbee,
whatever. He could snap it over his knee if he felt like it, that's his
right. Loads of people buy and sell records for a living, that's part of the
scene, just as it it is in all other musical genres. In fact, they provide a
real valued service to collectors. Someone somewhere will buy this from
him and be glad of it, and if they do pay more than the shop price (which
can vary wildly from store to store anyway) no-one will have twisted their
arm and they will probably consider it worth it anyway in order to get a
promo copy of a major release. Finally, it's not like he's stopping anyone
else owning it - anyone who wants it will have the opportunity to buy it
upon its official release.

If someone IS at fault here then maybe it's the store Matthew bought his
white from. Did they pay for their promo? My understanding is that some
distributors/labels charge shops for promos, some don't. If they didn't,
then they are the ones making a dodgy profit (and even then I wouldn't knock
'em for it, it's hard enought to make a living selling this music and to a
large extent they - the shops - are the ones keeping it alive and viable).
If they did, then surely everyone - label/artist, distributor, shop,
customer - got their piece of the pie? And it ain't often that happens.

Fact: pretty much every DJ, journo etc out there sells on their unwanted
promos, 99% of which will have been unsolicited anyway. It's part of the
biz. That's all.

Flame on.

well thats funny, that is what seems to happend the world over,,
dj's that are not so hell bent on self promotion and are more interested in
the values of music and their effect on human culture
are often left in the dark,, it's like they become this shadow but are still
essential building blocks for the whole movement,, not really recognised
because of a lack of stature.
Some DJ's get credits for playing an extra-ordinary sets based on their

what does that mean !? it probably means that most ppl can't make a fucking

one of the best detroit sets I heard this year was Alvin Hill playing a set
of old school Detroit rarities for about 4 people in Foran's. Rocking
doubles of an old strings of life remix, early model 500, and other old
obscure detroit stuff that I have not heard before or since.

Alvin is one of the most under-rated and under-appreciated dj's in detroit.
It is a shame that he does not sell himself harder, because he could wipe
the floor with a lot of the characters that are gigging around town these
days.

as for worst sets, I have a few real stinkers in mind but I think I have
made enough enemies in this town already. :)

2002-01-15 Thread phono_funk
No flame here cause that's what I'm squawkin'.

Actually, I can't even see the problem with the store selling it because
if it sold, the retailers may decide to stock it, especially before its
due out.

Perhaps retailers do that to see if there's a demand.

Running a label myself, all I hope for by the time promos copies end up
in stores or is sold by individuals in which ever way they do, is that
the promos themselves have resulted in sales, write ups, forged and
fortified beneficial business relationships, and air/dj play, and they
have. That in itself justifies the expense and it beats them sitting on
your living room floor gathering dust.

My 2 cents,

no idea who they are, they made a couple of nice singles but the albums
don't do it for me... especially that one on Gigolo. Maybe they're too
referrential ? I guess I'll stick to my Drexciya EPs (well, some of them)
Gwendal

can someone tell me who japanese telecom is. sounds like drexciya.

[313] label posters

2002-01-15 Thread Jason Donnelly

morning!

Does anyone on the list know if any of the Detroit records labels (Planet
E, Transmat etc...) have promotion poster's available to the public

About to fill up all the empty wall space in my flat and was thinking that
a large Transmat logo/ poster would really be the 'cherry on the cake' so
to speak, I know UR where handing out 'Interstella Fugitives' posters at
there gigs (so not really available to the public).

and feedback would be appreciated?

I'm pretty sure you can purchase the UR poster and also a Red Planet poster
from Submerge. Try getting in contact with them, [EMAIL PROTECTED] , and
see how you go.

X-102 Disvovers the Rings of Saturn Tresor-4
The intro is not on the CD. Classic Early 90s banging proto-trance
Hood/Mills material, complete with orchestra Stabs, and 'ardcore pitch
modulated sawtooth waves. Titan, C-Ring, and Ground Zero (Alan used
to kick this hard) are favorite tracks from the CD.

the track Bill's friend is after is Groundzero (The Planet), which as well
as being released on the X-102 doublepack on Tresor is also the a-side of
the X-102 12 on UR (UR-19.5).

Has anyone else on this list checked out David Donohoe from Ireland??? He
has an LP out on D1 (Day One) that is absolutely brilliant. I can't stop

same vien as the other D1 stuff (most appropriately - Mark Broom).

If you haven't heard it, I suggest you take a listen to it. Very nice and
inspiring.
