2002-05-09 Thread Tim Maughan

very bizarely, Gods Kitchen (another lesser known Gatecrasher/cream alike)
are doing a festival in the UK this summer, with a techno tent organised by
Atomic Jam. line up includes Derrick May, Suburban Knight, Funk D'void, Ben
Sims, Umek, Slam and Surgeon among others. Oh, and Mills is playing
Homelands.

which is a bit of a surprise for the UK these days.

To completely ruin any sort of 31337 status I would ever be able to
obtain...I am driving up from Austin, TX (1400 miles). I've always wanted
to attend DEMF, I finally had a chance this year due to being laid off,
and the deciding factor was not a Detroit DJ. It was Dave Clarke, sooner
or later all the Detroit DJ's make it down to Austin or Houston. I can't
ever recall a time when Dave Clarke appeared in Texas. White/Black,
Dutch/Detroit...a rose is a rose is a rose. It's all techno, and I'm
really excited to be taking part this year.

What do you mean? There are Detroit DJs/acts performing this year. Or
you meant to say that there's too many unknown Detroit acts that are not
the ones you like or expect? All those expected to play have pretty
much played already, except Mills, Young, Hood, all of whom were

I personally am quite glad to see those hiphop acts added, Dilated Peoples
is great, and (obviously) hiphop is very very big in Detroit, and deserves
to be represented at the festival. I actually wish there was more hiphop, I
think that would help improve the draw and appeal to the community of
Detroit.

As far as Ministry of Sound, well I'm sure people may have some strong
opinions, but nevertheless it's probably a good move on PCM's part.

Paul Virilio:
"Resistance is always possible! But we must engage in resistance first of
all by developing the idea of a technological culture. However, at the
present time, this idea is grossly underdeveloped. For example, we have
developed an artistic and a literary culture. Nevertheless, the ideals of
technological culture remain underdeveloped and therefore outside of popular
culture and the practical ideals of democracy. This is also why society as a
whole has no control over technological developments. And this is one of the

Yeah! A big thumbs up for that Iridite release. I got sent that mixcd of
Claude Young a while back and during work the two tracks that made look up
to check the tracklist were the Iridite ones.

Keep 'em coming mr. Brunton! ;-)

How about not handling it so poorly that potential sponsors aren't wary of
doing business with PCM? That might have been good start.

Put your negative crap aside people. this festival is STILL the best thing

to not only happen to all electronic music, but to detroit techno

[313] DEMF UPDATE( why didn't they just approach another auto manufacturer? )

2002-05-09 Thread PhedX
Because when Ford dropped out, afterthe Ford sponsored year, (DEMF, and the
let down AREA One) most people saw that the site did not significantly
impact the purchase of new cars...

Then there were all the E stories last year linking raves/techno/and drug
deaths together...

Continued sponsorship would have been costly with only brand loyalty as
reward which is not enough for the million or so Ford shoveled out...

A nd with the new touchy feely, we are a family here at Ford, (with billy
ford in em) campaig n it would not tie i n without use of ones brain which
is not how the ad age ncies work here i n tow n. They like packages nice
neat (brain not to be used on) packages. IE last year was a no brainer

Look how the media compa ny is screwi ng up a pretty brai nless co ncert.
Get good tale nt people come (make sure talent will be there oops...)

hold on there is a new update from PCM lol

PS. (The accountants will not let them...)

PSS. AREA TWO is coming. (area one rehashed???)

RE: [313] DEMF Update

2002-05-09 Thread Matthew Cloney
OK if my understanding of MoS is correct, they do mostly prog house/trance
type stuff right? But if they're not bringing anything into the festival
outside of the techno genre then it probably will do less to taint the
festival's atmosphere than bringing in hip hop acts. It seems like the
lineup was pretty much 100% techno before this point and it doesn't look
like it's MoS that's throwing that balance.

Cheers,

Is that over by the Slinky Stage or Cream's?

I think Pop Culture got desparate for sponsors. Why didn't they just
approach another auto manufacturer?

(I envision Aux88 "My A.U.X. Mind" being used for a Dodge Neon

hahah:0 what you got to understand is that MTv over here is slightly
different to the US. we've got a lot of different MTV channels and I think a
bit more variety of music. "jaguar" got some pretty heavy rotation over here
when it was first released, as is GV's "la la land" at the moment - as well
as that awesome Roni Size/Cypress Hill track. A few months ago even Funk
D'void's "bass Invaders" was getting played.

And anyways, just a few days ago wasn't Mr Sean Deason saying he was getting

[313] An amazing twisted melodic tune I heard...

2002-05-09 Thread Steve Robertson
A couple of weeks ago I was out in Aberdeen (Scotland) to the Richie Hawtin
vs. Luke Slater night and I just have to try and find out what that 2nd last
track Richie Hawtin used is. If you've heard it I hope you can guess what
I'm talking about here - it had a kind of disocrdian sound that starts out
of tune and drifts in to be quite melodic in it's own twisted way. I
absolutely loved it and would love to know what it is any ideas anyone?

[313] OT: Fw: Fischerspooner live in the UK

2002-05-09 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
Fischerspooner

First EVER UK show + EXTRA SHOW by popular demand
The Bridge, London SE1
Thursday 30th May & Friday 31st May, 2002

New York's newest electronic superstars Fischerspooner are to play their
first ever UK shows at the end of May.

Presented by Metropolis Music, Fischerspooner bring their jaw-dropping live
experience to The Bridge, Weston Street, London SE1 on Thursday 30th May and
Fri 31st May. The Thursday event runs from 8pm - 1am and features a DJ set
from special-guest (and International Deejay Gigolos supremo) DJ Hell. The
Friday runs from 8pm-2am with special guests Erol Alkan and Rory Phillips.

Reviewing the recent New York Electroclash Festival, NME was moved to
describe the Fischerspooner show as; "Like Siegfried & Roy meets a drunken
Cirque de Soleil. A Vegas show with the honesty and unprofessionalism of a
punk soundcheck. It is beyond a show .It is a happening. The only way to
describe it is to say that it is indescribable. Finally, something new".

Tickets, priced at £15.00, are on sale now from Rough Trade record shops,
credit card hotline 020-7403-3331 (24 hrs) and online at
www.gigsandtours.com. This is shaping up to be the hottest ticket of 2002
and fans are strongly advised to book tickets early - and hacks after
guestlist pick up the phone right this second!

Fischerspooner's debut album '#1'(previously only available on import) has
been properly mastered and sequenced by Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner and
is in shops this week, released in limited-edition special packaging on FS
Studios/Ministry of Sound. The duo's debut UK single, "Emerge" will be
released on 8th July.

I'll go to jak if someone can assure me the sound system will be toned down

lush, bass heavy minimal rhythms of SCION (a.k.a. VAINQUEUR and SUBSTANCE

Re: [313] bob brown in urb

2002-05-09 Thread Phonopsia
This was my review of Bob Brown from sometime last year, just to throw out a
different POV. I recall when he was playing in NYC the reaction was not so
hot.

>>>
I was supposed to DJ with him at a small party just outside of DC in
January, but unfortunately my set was abruptly terminated by a pyromaniacal
raver... Anyway, before that he played for about an hour and a half for a
bunch of young kids. He played *some* nice tracks, but also threw in some
really uninspired older crap. I generally play a lot of older music too. The
emphasis is meant to be on the "uninspired" comment. He was playing some
older "rave-y" and east/west coast breaks stuff that don't do a whole lot of
anything for me. I got up off my sober ass and danced for about 1/4 of his
set when he dropped some nice techno. The one thing that struck me more than
anything else was that he seemed really confused as a DJ, and I'm not trying
to be rude or destroy his reputation. There were numerous full-on wrecks and
most of the time his sets of 8/16/32 weren't lined up. Besides that, when he
was in the mix, he did a lot of really obscure tweaking that seemed more of
a cover-up than inspiring. If you can't tell, I was pretty dissapointed. For
what it's worth, I know it wasn't the gear, b/c the two DJs on either side
of him had really nice sets on 3 turntables. I hear his production is good
though, and it may just have been an off night on the decks. In his defense,
he had to drive through a *nasty* blizzard for almost 4 hours to get to the
event, and may have been worn out and put-off by the crowd/venue, and we all
have off nights. I know others in the area that have an awful lot of respect
for him and enjoy his DJing. If he can pull in a crowd for a techno event
near DC in that kind of blizzard, there must be something to him.

He's fantastic on the decks and a great producer to boot, we've got two of
his mixes up if you want to take a stab at them called "Composition 2" (64k
MP3) and "Composition 3" (64k Ogg) on http://www.twelveinch.com - just follow
the "audio" link on the top and then scroll down to pick his name from the
artists box (4th one down on the main audio page). He's also got a web site
http://www.frameworkmusic.com which'll give you a bit more about him (dates,
releases, etc)
