Re: [313] DEMF Update/gods kitchen
very bizarely, Gods Kitchen (another lesser known Gatecrasher/cream alike) are doing a festival in the UK this summer, with a techno tent organised by Atomic Jam. line up includes Derrick May, Suburban Knight, Funk D'void, Ben Sims, Umek, Slam and Surgeon among others. Oh, and Mills is playing Homelands. which is a bit of a surprise for the UK these days. www.godskitchen.com on 9/5/02 6:40 pm, Jones, George at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Is that over by the Slinky Stage or Cream's? > > I think Pop Culture got desparate for sponsors. To completely ruin any sort of 31337 status I would ever be able to obtain...I am driving up from Austin, TX (1400 miles). I've always wanted to attend DEMF, I finally had a chance this year due to being laid off, and the deciding factor was not a Detroit DJ. It was Dave Clarke, sooner or later all the Detroit DJ's make it down to Austin or Houston. I can't ever recall a time when Dave Clarke appeared in Texas. White/Black, Dutch/Detroit...a rose is a rose is a rose. It's all techno, and I'm really excited to be taking part this year. -Aaron On Thu, 9 May 2002, PhedX wrote: > Detroit is no longer just Derrick Kevin Juan, and now Eddie. > > Detroit is and has more tha n te n djs... Re: [313] DEMF Update
I personally am quite glad to see those hiphop acts added, Dilated Peoples is great, and (obviously) hiphop is very very big in Detroit, and deserves to be represented at the festival. I actually wish there was more hiphop, I think that would help improve the draw and appeal to the community of Detroit. As far as Ministry of Sound, well I'm sure people may have some strong opinions, but nevertheless it's probably a good move on PCM's part. /cyborg k Paul Virilio: "Resistance is always possible! But we must engage in resistance first of all by developing the idea of a technological culture. However, at the present time, this idea is grossly underdeveloped. For example, we have developed an artistic and a literary culture. This is also why society as a whole has no control over technological developments. And this is one of the gravest threats to democracy in the near future. RE: [313] DEMF Update
OK if my understanding of MoS is correct, they do mostly prog house/trance type stuff right? But if they're not bringing anything into the festival outside of the techno genre then it probably will do less to taint the festival's atmosphere than bringing in hip hop acts. It seems like the lineup was pretty much 100% techno before this point and it doesn't look like it's MoS that's throwing that balance. oh goody a DJ Twer! they're talkin about the new mgd tower, the same tower as last year, and the year before. and all new heights of dance! if I didnt know better, I would think DEMF is a big lame trance festival.. if i didn't know better, i would think you were trying to be clever. Put your negative crap aside people. this festival is STILL the best thing to not only happen to all electronic music, but to detroit techno specifically. There has not been one iota or whiff of trance any of the 3 years, yet you all adore to bitch about it. what would you rather have them do for marketing? say nothing? Print flyers on lined paper that says, "a big festival, but its so underground you probably won't want to go unless you're elite." give it up. its getting way too old now. if you don't like it, DON'T GO. it'll make it easier for me to enjoy the music more. _ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[313] An amazing twisted melodic tune I heard...
A couple of weeks ago I was out in Aberdeen (Scotland) to the Richie Hawtin vs. Luke Slater night and I just have to try and find out what that 2nd last track Richie Hawtin used is. If you've heard it I hope you can guess what I'm talking about here - it had a kind of disocrdian sound that starts out of tune and drifts in to be quite melodic in it's own twisted way. I absolutely loved it and would love to know what it is any ideas anyone? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [313] bob brown in urb
This was my review of Bob Brown from sometime last year, just to throw out a different POV. I recall when he was playing in NYC the reaction was not so hot. >>> I was supposed to DJ with him at a small party just outside of DC in January, but unfortunately my set was abruptly terminated by a pyromaniacal raver... Anyway, before that he played for about an hour and a half for a bunch of young kids. He played *some* nice tracks, but also threw in some really uninspired older crap. I generally play a lot of older music too. The emphasis is meant to be on the "uninspired" comment. He was playing some older "rave-y" and east/west coast breaks stuff that don't do a whole lot of anything for me. I got up off my sober ass and danced for about 1/4 of his set when he dropped some nice techno. The one thing that struck me more than anything else was that he seemed really confused as a DJ, and I'm not trying to be rude or destroy his reputation. There were numerous full-on wrecks and most of the time his sets of 8/16/32 weren't lined up. Besides that, when he was in the mix, he did a lot of really obscure tweaking that seemed more of a cover-up than inspiring. If you can't tell, I was pretty dissapointed. For what it's worth, I know it wasn't the gear, b/c the two DJs on either side of him had really nice sets on 3 turntables. I hear his production is good though, and it may just have been an off night on the decks. In his defense, he had to drive through a *nasty* blizzard for almost 4 hours to get to the event, and may have been worn out and put-off by the crowd/venue, and we all have off nights. I know others in the area that have an awful lot of respect for him and enjoy his DJing. If he can pull in a crowd for a techno event near DC in that kind of blizzard, there must be something to him. <<< Tristan --- http://www.mp313.com <- Music http://www.metrotechno.net <- DC techno + more http://www.metatrackstudios.com <- DC DJ/Production studios http://phonopsia.tripod.com <- Hub [EMAIL PROTECTED] <- email - Original Message - From: "Marek" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, May 08, 2002 8:25 PM Subject: Re: [313] bob brown in urb > On May 8, 2002 11:27 am, the following was written: > > i discovered bob brown while i was living in philly...he's just excellent > > both in technical skill and personality...a friend just sent me this > > article that came out in urb about him last month...if you ever, ever get a > > chance to catch him live i would do so. > > > > -kathleen > > He's fantastic on the decks and a great producer to boot, we've got two of > his mixes up if you want to take a stab at them called "Composition 2" (64k > MP3) and "Composition 3" (64k Ogg) on http://www.twelveinch.com - just follow > the "audio" link on the top and then scroll down to pick his name from the > artists box (4th one down on the main audio page).
