[313] Older Mix I did.

2002-07-22 Thread Fusiontecrecords
Ok so I was updating my site and ended up running over my bandwith, so I have
to store some mix sets somewhere else, anyways so this is an older mix I did
about a year ago. If anyone wants it, the link is included at the bottom. I am
going to delete it in about a week, but I will have a new electro mix up on my
site about the same time.

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/437/allen_gamble_and_dan_kahn.html

Let me know how you like it, I did this mix about a year ago.
Thanks
Allen

::REVIEWS::

2002-07-22 :: Proem  Dryft :: Component Records
Proem's latest No_Carrier 3 CD-EP and Dryft's The Mytotyc Exyt CD-EP both on
Component Records are the latest two releases set to place Component on top
in the field of abstract and abrasive electronic music.

2002-07-21 :: V/A :: Phil Ranelin Remixes (Hefty)
...Overall, the variety of mixers means no one's going to love every
track. I really
enjoy about half of them. So for the money, the vinyl is a better bet than
the CD.
Same tracks, and close to half the price...

2002-07-21 :: Qua :: Forgetabout (Surgery)
...All in all Forgetabout is an excellent debut. Qua covers a lot of
ground across 13
tracks, but also holds things together as a whole. Tunes can be focused on
at a micro
scale, as little contrasting sounds shift the mood repeatedly, or the album
can be taken
as a whole as a rather psychedelic journey...

2002-07-21 :: Bloq  Pellarin :: Couchblip!
Coucblip! (Australia) have just unleashed two powerful debut releases by
Bloq (Life
from the Outside) and Pellarin (Tangible Abstractions) and Igloo Mag had a
chance to
delve into the grooves of these latest two CD's that are well worth the
purchase!

2002-07-15 :: Yellow6 :: Source:Remix (Endorphin Records)
...The Yellow6 sound is an enchanting mix of electronically enhanced
guitar work
with chilled beats and overlaid synths resulting in a serenely floating bed
of aurally
relaxing tones that drift and flow, lulling you into a complete state of
calm and
tranquillity...

2002-06-30 :: The Condition of Musak :: Comp. (Expanding Records)
...The Condition of Musak is a consistently high quality compilation
providing an
accurate and well-compiled overview of the EVS series of singles...

2002-07-11 :: Maps Diagrams vs. Tim Jackiw :: Glaciarc EP (Tundra-Music)
...Tundra Music is a new label founded by Tim Koch (the artist formerly
known as
Thug) and electronic music enthusiast Pietro Da Sacco. Their debut release
features
tracks by two stylistically similar artists, Tim Martin from Cambridge,
England and Tim
Jackiw from Adelaide, Australia. While being about as far apart as possible
geographically,
the two inhabit a similar musical landscape...

2002-06-30 :: Misery Loves Company :: Comp. (Ersatz Audio)
...Misery Loves Company is a compilation that would act as a perfect
introduction for
newcomers or a welcome addition to those already savvy with the scene and
the Ersatz
Audio label in general...

2002-06-24 :: Red Snapper :: It's All Good (Inertia/Keep Diggin)
...As a closing statement to Red Snapper’s recording career, this compiled
audio
statement of their collective musical taste works surprisingly well. Red
Snapper may
be gone, but they are definitely not forgotten...

2002-07-06 :: The Abstract Side of Organic Electronics :: n5MD Label Profile
“I really just want the label to be known for putting out music that people
enjoy.”
 Mike Cadoo.

2002-06-23 :: Dynamic Sonic Space :: Q  A Session with Arovane
...I’m always interested in acoustic experiments. In the 80’s I didn’t
have enough money
to buy a sampler or synthesizer. I took tape recorders to record sounds. I
manipulated
the hardware of the tape recorder to slow down the speed, play tapes
backwards… I used
two or three microphones in different rooms and mix the signal...

Ha, that'll be the brit girl band 'The Sugababes'.
It's been a strange week really in terms of the media.
Seeing Fischerspooner on BBC1's 'Top Of The Pops' was bizarre; although I
don't actually like that tune and think it is a bit mainstream anyway.

In answer to Love Inc R.E.S.P.E.C.T. let's hope so as I still have it about
somewhere. Great record but just wish it was cut a little faster in these
days.

I was on my way home the other night and stopped into
the 24hr cafe for a burger. If I am not mistaken I
could hear the melancholy chords of blackwater in the
background! sounds like it's been given a vocal mix
too.. most of the time they have the mainstream radio
stations playing in these places , and they play I
guess a slightly more leftfield mix of dance tunes on
fri sat nights. If this tune will make it big in
australia remains to be seen, I was just pretty blown
up to hear something off 430 west on the radio!

p.s. what is a copy of R.E.S.P.E.C.T by Love Inc on
picture disc worth? I picked up a copy for a tenner
 the other day

p.s.p.s. I heard some godawful europop tune that
sampled the hook from 'are freinds elektrik?' by
tubeway army. if you're going to remix something, at
 least do it justice!

[313] mills CDs

2002-07-22 Thread Rusty Blasco
Here's a quick but very subjective question. Yesterday my best friend
communicated to me a desire to pick up his first Jeff Mills CD. He lives in
West Hollywood, blocks away from Amoeba Records, which he says carries an
extensive collection. I didn't know what to tell him, since my focus
recently has been primarily vinyl. He is specifically seeking some good
hard techno, y'know, the Mills banging variety. Suggestions?

Re: [313] STACEY PULLEN 'Today is the Tomorrow You Were Promised Yesterday'

2002-07-22 Thread stewart
Well here's the review I wrote for World Technoi Nation at the time

The long awaited new album from Detroit's Stacey Pullen has met with mixed
reviews since its release. This may be due, in part, to the high expectation
following his excellent Theory of Silent Phase album on Transmat, an album
that, with great standout tracks like 'Bodyrock', was soulful, organic and very
Detroit sounding in the tradition of Mr May's label. What we have here,
however, is something of a departure, an exploration of the kind of jazzy
electronica that artists like Ian O'Brien or 4 Hero have been doing for some
time now. Whilst all respect has to go to Stacey Pullen for trying to push the
boundaries of his own music, the overall effect is of an artist experimenting
and trying to find a groove that really works. The album lacks a clear
direction and, whilst the majority of it spawns from Pullen's love of jazz and
funk, the sense is of a collection of tracks as opposed to a cohesive and
flowing album. Having said that there are some high points on offer. The Nu
Jazz fusion of 'Futuristicfreakqueen' provides a frantic and live sounding drum
beat (I'm not sure if all the drums were programmed or not, but its definitely
the live effect that is desired), with a deep bassline and all manner of spaced
out and futuristic effects that rise out through the drums. '40thstreetblack'
is a slightly more laid back and groovy affair with a nice squelchy bit of
analogue bass. Where the album is at its weakest is with the epic sounding and
somewhat trancey workouts of cuts like 'Tsunami' and the more 4 to the floor
orientated 'Powershot'. These tracks sound rather old and are not at ease
sitting with the jazzy experimentation of the rest of the album.
On the whole though, it is an interesting, brave and surprisingly mellow album
that shows a lot of ambition, but lacks an original edge to really stand it
apart from similar excursions.

So a friend and I were at the 700 Club in Philly last
night.

There was this track played. Description:
When it starts it sounds like traditional Indian
music-we both thought it must of been folk music from
India, but then..
Then something similar to a sample sounding like the
nightrider beat sets in
Then the bass is HEAVY, almost close to a hip hop
beat.

This track was infectious. When I asked what it was,
the DJ just said it was a dubplate and it didnt have a
name. grr

Ok, you trainspotters in the know..any ideas? It was
bugging my friend and I all last night and today.

gracias, and good luck

[313] CrossCurrents NYC

2002-07-22 Thread d.pinter
For all those NYC 313'ers, I'll be spinning a new and classic Detroit set
tomorrow night at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum as part of the
CrossCurrents series. The evening is being hosted by noted product designer
Karim Rashid. The event will take place from 6pm to 9:30pm in the courtyard
garden (weather permitting) or in the great hall inside the museum if it
doesn't. The whole evening is FREE and the museum will be no charge as well.
Worth checking out is their current exhibition Skin/Surface which focuses on
product, fashion, architecture, and transportation.

Cooper-Hewitt is located at 2 e. 91st St
There will be a bar so I'm told.
