RE: [313] techno/house divide (was Peacefrog Records special on B BC)
the greatest dancer, on m_plant is definately house...disco house even, since the main loop is from a disco song...as far as i know... look..i brought robert hood and house back together! - Hi Good point. I tend to think of the music I'm into as techno (Detroit stuff, Trapez, Perlon, etc) but techno's kind of a dirty word around these parts (because it's been subsumed by the hard monotonous European variety of techno), so when I'm asked what I play I say deep electronic house (or sometimes minimal house, but then minimal's kind of a dirty word too). At the end of the day techno and house are two ends of a spectrum, and the distinction is sometimes difficult to make. Do you think techno as originally defined and produced by Juan Atkins would be considered techno if released today? I think it'd probably be called deep house. But I guess most of Rob Hood's stuff is very clearly techno, the Nighttime World albums excepted. And I haven't actually heard the Peacefrog album yet. Cheers Chris For people in Sydney: we're starting up a house night on Thursday August 29, and Inertia (Australian distributors) are giving us copies of Robert Hood's Point Blank album to give away on the night. I'll post more details later, but essentially it's a $6 dollar night at the Hunter Bar in central Sydney, featuring Declan Kelly from Melbourne's Honkytonks and Research Development and Simon Caldwell from Sydney's Mad Racket. RE: [313] techno/house divide (was Peacefrog Records special on B BC)
Hi I think the is it house or is it techno thing isn't really that important. There's lots of bad techno, and even more bad house, but good house and good techno are to me almost the same thing (I don't know what the word is for it, and I guess it doesn't matter). I do think, though, like politics in most Western democracies, that the middle ground has shifted to the right. Maybe the term techno needs to be reclaimed by the deeper producers -- and maybe I should say happily that the stuff I play is techno. I read somewhere that Herbert considers his music to be techno... some people use techno as a blanket term, others to describe a specific form of electronic music -Joe - Original Message - From: senslo [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: FC3 Richards [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Saturday, August 03, 2002 10:22 PM Subject: RE: [313] techno/house divide (was Peacefrog Records special on B BC) Hi I think the is it house or is it techno thing isn't really that important. Re: [313] techno/house divide
funny this should come up. I friend of mine, who was born and raised in Detroit but has been living in California for the past 10 years, came to visit Detroit for his High School reunion recently. I took him to some of the hot clubs and parties around town and he asked me later so tell me something... when did house and techno become 2 different scenes? He'd come up in the early Detroit club days of the Music Institute, City Club, ect. and wasnt around to see the gradual polarization of the 2 scenes. it was pretty eye opening. sean From: FC3 Richards [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sat, 3 Aug 2002 15:24:49 -1000 To: 'senslo' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: '313@hyperreal.org' 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: [313] techno/house divide (was Peacefrog Records special on B BC) the greatest dancer, on m_plant is definately house...disco house even, since the main loop is from a disco song...as far as i know... look..i brought robert hood and house back together! - Hi Good point. He'd come up in the early Detroit club days of the Music Institute, City Club, ect. and wasnt around to see the gradual polarization of the 2 scenes. House is based on song forms, techno is not. It's more like through composed. I recently posted something to the IDM group regarding a similar idea - vocal club tracks: It reminds me of the classic criticism of opera: The words and the song form slow down the action of the drama. I get the same feeling about a lot of vocal club music. The vocal part slows down the energy of the trance/techno sounds. (Maybe it's expectations of what those sounds/rhythms are capable of?) Techno and trance have a very different feeling than house and one of the big things that make it different is the nonreliance on the voice and vocal forms. I'm not talking about vocal snipets, like ya baby, or take me higher. I'm talking about a song form like intro, verse and chorus kinda stuff. Where the form of the track is determined by verse and chorus repetitions- something that you usually don't find in techno - and I know there are exceptions. I'm just hearing more and more vocal tracks that are trying to blend techno and trance sounds with a vocal track. Is there a commercial reason for these vocal tracks? Like you have a better chance to break into the top 40 with a vocal track? Any Ideas? mediadrome - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [313] techno/house divide
I live in Iowa, and the best local DJs have always built sets from techno AND house records. Because of eastern Iowa's proximity to Chicago, house music has been popular in the underground scene for 14 or 15 years -- there's a continual two way traffic between Chicago and Iowa, people bringing records home, people moving to Chicago, etc. But it seems like the #1 criterion for playing a record is that it be a great track that ignites the dancefloor, and not where it was produced. The most interesting music being produced at any point defies easy categorization -- there's loads of brilliant tech house being made right now. Which is to say that it's minimal, not based on RB, but has that little swingskip feel of house music. Iowa City is also a place where it actually works to do a show with Hip Hop, IDM, House, and Experimental music all on the same bill. The biggest hip hop heads in town love a good set of techno house music, and the art students out for a noise artists will even drop their ironic detachment for a minute for a good DJ. It really is all music. DEMF 2002 proved to me exhaustively that dance music monocultures are a drag. As much as I like hard banging techno, I like it a hell of a lot more when it's not all I hear for days ... On Sun, 4 Aug 2002, sean deason wrote: funny this should come up.
