(313) Ms. Laura Gavoor
i feel like i need to express some of my thoughts on laura. this isnt intended to be a eulogy, so please bear with me on my ramblings. im a little thrown off by the whole thing. im in frankfurt right now. i was awakened with a phonecall around 8 pm german time concerning the very untimely and extremely unfortunant death of Ms. Gavoor. i dont have anyone over here to talk to about it with (besides rich), and unless the funeral is next wednesday, i wont be able to attend. so, i figured i would open up on here. i met Laura on a wednesday night down at alvins in 95 for family funktion. i kinda jumped into a conversation between her and claude young. until then, id never seen a woman (let alone a human being) freely discuss their passions for detroit techno, as well as the development of its artists. she floored me with it! the thing i awlays respected about her is that she never pulled any punches. she always told the story straight, or at least how she saw it. she may have been considered to have (for lack of a better term) a big mouth, but she was never one who couldnt be corrected. for this, i always had the utmost respect for her. in this world of backbiting snakes around every corner, she was always up front, as well as being open to suggestion. She set the record straight, and she stood up for detroit artists, wether they were managed by her or not. i think this is more than i could say about most of the people ive come across in her exact same position. anyhow, i sat with her and claude for at least 2 hours. barely spoke. interjected here and there... maybe a nod or a naive little YEAH! TOTTALLY! here and there. surely, not something that contributed in any way to the conversation at hand. i ran into her again about 3-4 months later. i wanted to say hello, but figured why would she rememeber me?? and left it alone. near the end of the night, she made a point to come say hello and tell me she was leaving. i never forgot that. i keep thinking about all the countless people ive met where i had to think ahead of time on how i would say hi and what would be the best thing to refresh their memory with, and because of this instance, ive eternally felt bad whenever i get approached and dont rememeber meeting the person who approaches me. ive learned over time that these things just sometimes happen, but for whatever reason laura rememebered me. and i think im not alone with this. for about a year or 2 after that occasion, i would run into her all the time. shed always be in the middle of the floor, shakin it. metroplex 10 year anniversary: stacey pullen in the main room... her and adriel might as well had a spotlight on them. didnt matter really, cuz her energy straight lit the floor up on its own! plenty of other occasions, but this one has always stood out. over time, she kinda stayed more in the background. i didnt see her as much, but at the important events. it was always a joy to see her out. thinking back to the good ol days of 95 and such when everything was all about fun (har har). and then i rememeber when i had jumped on as resident at family. when things started cookin down there, laura was a permanant fixture on tuesdays. part of the original true spirit of the night. id be playing, and just seeing her on the floor partying always gave me an incredible feeling! i mean, shes heard them all! if laura was dancing, then the dj most likely was doing something right. seeing her on the floor gave me more encouragement and confidence. then around 6 months into family, she gave me full on support. offering her booking services to me and such. although i declined her offer (im a kinda do it yourself kinda guy), i was thoughoughly grateful for her even having the interest. looking back, i kinda wish i had accepted, as this would have been the only chance her and i wouldve had for working together. laura will be missed. by me, by the party scene in detroit, as well as her spirit for the city itself. there might be some people who dont have the kindest of things to say about her. im not one of those people. if youve read this far, you should kinda aska round and make sure claude is aware of this. ive lost complete touch with him, but im positive hed want to know. my thoughts and prayers go out to lauras family. and to you, Laura, go find armando and larry levan. the party is waiting on you. rest in peace. love always, derek. _ The simple way to read all your emails at thatweb http://www.thatweb.com

Off the top of my head.. 1) Sleeve art Juan 3MB's album with the TDR artwork - all over the shop, vibrant. Plus I love the label art as well. The Concept series - clever concept ;) The Navarre mixes of Suburban Knights Art of Stalking. On music art, labels, covers, artwork with turntables/vinyl, and to a minor extent flyers, I recommend the book Discstyle - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/3283003696/qid=1033536497/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/103-5960765-436?v=glancen=507846 2) Lucky finds I received Sean Deason's Allegory Metaphor for US$0.01 plus postage today courtesy of eBay. Some white labels which were Phuture tracks for a few dollars. Naomi Daniel's Feel The Fire double pack for nix aswell. -- Benn Glazier [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.royaltech.net -- http://fastmail.fm - One of many happy users: http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/quotes.html

(313) Laura Gavoor: Microcosm to Macroeconomics
I had a few email conversations and unfortunately never met her. But how could someone like Laura Gavoor not leave a memorable and positive impression. A great beacon of integrity connecting the amazing and essential world of music with the necessary but utterly crummy world of the music business, and providing some needed sanity to the latter. I join with those of you who knew Laura personally, this is a great loss and as we go forward let's not forget to honor others who like Laura respect and embrace the music, the people and life itself. The past is over and can never be repeatedor can it..?? What has been discussed has been due to the fact THAT THERE ARE NO black American DANCE artists of any number nowadays, sporting the same opportune major label distribution or recognition as their white counterparts...of whatever aspect of dance music they represent. If they are producing electronically driven dance music, are known and American...chances are they've got a pretty good situation with a major American label. What came before has set today's climate in this industry. There are NO BLACK Rock n'Roll artists today...FOR A VERY GOOD REASON. They were eliminated from the playing field a long time ago,but once upon a time the music was THEIRS alone born and bred. No one could tell me that all Black American rock n' roll musicians/bands...just disappeared. There are probably still black rock bands trying to get signed that will NEVER be afforded the opportunity in today's America. Why?? Because they aren't smart enough or talented enough? Please someone factually contradict this phenome with even the smallest exampleAlan? The game is old...competition...dirty pool...whatever you wish to call itbut it/the past solidly outlines what is to come--if we let it. Okay, Carl Craig's with Caroline...King Britt has made it to radio...anybody else??? Anybody? Kool Keith??? He's frustrated as hell and gits no marketing support (or radio play) from his label and therefore will remain right where he is. Who else? Let's update this to present day and back up our discussion/argument with facts. My tirade was in response to lack of respect for those 313 trail-blazing artists, business peeps, record store owners and promoters that came before affording a way for the young and inexperienced types on this list to presume expertise about garnering success in this country. Most of you have no clue of what these artists/peeps have gone through or what they are faced with TODAY in order to sell product. I'll wager that, just within the dance music arena, that there are even LESS black artists with major label deals/ties TODAY then there were back in the dusty (according to Josh) days of Juan Atkins/Lil Louis. Just within electronic dance musics' major categories (House, Techno, Dn'B...) Let's keep this mainstream american labels/mainstream subs only, K? How is this relevant to the so-called underground?...again microcosm to the macroeconomics of the entertainment industry at large in this country. If artists like Blaze, (is this recent enuff?) once signed to Motown failed at getting exposure and radio play for their product even while housed in a majorwhat chance, then, do the independents have to facilitate/develop market base or penetration to sell their product to potential fans in America? Whether you accept this or not...that is their goal--SALES and market penetration...not just ot be coolly exclusive for y'all to selfishly consume. Answering that, begs further questioning...do some of you presume that their product WOULDN'T be taken to or enjoyed by said potential audience? Cuz the success that we independents have garnered (as well as this thread) have proven that a fallacy. Independent (mostly public and college) radio actively play our products which gives a little hope and exposure for new sales/market penetration. But again, opportunities afforded us are the result of 20 or 30 TIMES the work of our counter-parts and non-ethnic competition. Roll callfor dance music artists either signed to or with major label distributioneveryone submit/post those that you know. While I have preference for good music of any color..I'm rather certain this discussion will still break out skewed in favor of non-ethnic (politically correct enuff?) artists, both good..mostly bad, based in this country. Because of the severe lack of support and active dis-interest, our mission in establishing a base of

This is not meant to be an eulogy. But, I am very shocked of this Terrible Great loss of Laura Gavoor. My Deepest Sympathy, Thoughts, and Prayer go out to the Gavoor Family. Laura was one of very few Women in the Detroit Electronic Music Underground Scene when I started my Record Label in 1990 (Acacia Records), that help Build our City's Techno Dream in the past decade. Laura not only Booked myself on various DJ Venues, but alot of other Artists in Detroit and the Surrounding areas, such as Norma Jean Bell, Theo Parrish, KDJ, Kenny Larkin, and Juan Atkins to name a few. I met Laura in the early 90's . She was always so full of energy, dances (at Clubs), very down to earth, and extremely Supportive of the Detroit Electronic Music Scene, including ALL of it's Artists. She not only managed her Booking agency for over 10 years (and did very well), but Organized and Promoted, some of the Best underground Parties with Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Jeff Mills to name a few. Laura also Administered, and Consulted a couple of Detroit's Most innovative Independent Record Labels. She was like a Sister to me, being one of the first most Prominent real Female Supporters of Techno Music I met to date. Someone who I can call anytime of the day and night and say Hey, what ya working on now?, or just how are you?, she would just chat away. Her energy, Free-spirited Soul, and History of Support and work will dearly be missed We Love you Laura- May you rest in Peace K-HAND Kelli Hand Detroit-History.com

I never had the pleasure of meeting Laura in person. I first got in touch with her back in 97 for some bookings to Istanbul. In the last five years, I learnt a lot from Laura through our phone and email traffic. Through other sources I realized she was one of the more important people in Detroit and was a tru believer of this music. I was also in the midst of doing business with her and was wondering why she didn't get back to me. When I read the posts on 313, something left my heart forever. Thank you Laura for all you have done for this music, the city of Detroit and the people around you. May God bless your heart. Mehmet Istanbul, Turkey

I've talked to a friend, and we'd like to get a tribute party together here on the East Coast. If we all pull our resources together, we can make a party happen that Laura would be proud of. If you are interested in playing, or donating a space (or a night you run), please Email me directly. All proceeds would go directly to Laura's family. All DJs will play for free. I'm sure many of us can remember that one or two line private reply to a 313 post from Laura that put a smile on our faces with it's humor and enthusiasm. Early on, before most of us, Laura knew the techno was more than just party music, and her professional and personal efforts to promote it to the world are beyond measure. Her death made me think of what the far flung community we comprise means to me, and it's something that I can't even begin to put into words. The producers, the fans, the promoters, the writers who get it right -- this is a precious thing. I make my jokes when I come to DEMF about it being the techno equivalent of a beanie baby convention, but it's more than that to me. It's family. So thanks be to Laura Gavoor, and James Stinson, for enriching all of our lives, and thanks be to all of you for letting the music pull you into the circle. And thanks for the thousand kindnesses done to me by all the 313'ers I won't mention by name, lest I forget someone. We need to be thinking about how precious each of is full time, not just when we lose someone.

(313) notebook for laura gavoor
Someone on this list who wishes to remain anonymous suggested privately the idea that we give the Gavoor family a bounded notebook filled with the 313 list's anecdotes, tributes and condoloences of the late great Laura G. I think it's a very appropriate way to people to pass on their wishes that can't be in the country or can't make the visitation/funeral. And even if you are going to be in town and would like to contribute, that's cool too. You don't necessarily have had to meet her either to participate. Even if it's just a two line email passing on your condolences, I'm sure it would be appreciated. I'd be willing to spearhead this, so please send your privately (so as to not waste bandwidth on people who hate bandwidth wasters) your thoughts and I will bind them together and present it to the family when I go to the visitation Thursday night. Please have them in no later than Thursday afternoon EST. Thanks.
Re: (313) notebook for laura gavoor
I'm posting this because it states something that hasn't been stated yet. Laura was a _strong_ woman. Confident, assertive and still in this society let alone the microcosm of male dominance that is the techno scene this is not taken well. This is what made her controversial. In thinking I realized that even though it's been over a decade there still aren't alot of women like her with any sort of presence in the scene. Though I'm sure she would not want to make an issue of this she helped forge a path that made it just a little bit easier for women behind to follow. I still lay claim to being a feminist and so her exit to _me_ leaves a gaping hole that will be very difficult to fill. (313) laura gavoor et al
I haven't spoken to Laura via email for some time...and we've never met. But when I heard about her passing it made me think of my best friend, who was murdered a year ago last week. Detroit in the eyes of many people is a wasteland. Even listening to some of the comments of May, Atkins, Mills, and Hawtin, one can easily get the impression that people around the city are just biding their time to turn the lights out. People like Laura saw Detroit not only for what it appeared to be, but also for what it was underneath the surface AND FOR WHAT IT COULD BE. In the face of an extended campaign to discredit and disinform, people like Laura remain DEFIANT, RELENTLESS, UNBOWED, and UNBROKEN...while at the same time expressing a joy for life simply unmatched by any of the rat bast*rds out to sh*t on the city. I teach an Introduction to African American Studies class. Today we talked about Plessy v. Ferguson...for those who aren't familiar, Plessy was a shoemaker in 1890's Louisiana and he tried to sue to have a racist policy of separating whites and blacks on public transportation dismantled. He didn't win...but the kicker to me is the following: Plessy was 7/8 white. He could have simply passed for white and lived a life of relative privilege. But he didn't. Not only did he claim his blackness, he FOUGHT for black people. Now I don't know Laura personally. Don't know if she's black or white, tall or short, big or small. I do know this though. Where the path of least resistance in relation to Detroit and Detroit techno is to simply pass Laura stayed...living, loving, and KICKING *SS. We'd do well to follow her path. She will be sorely missed.
