Yes, it's her, too much hidden in this macho dj's world.

She deserves better, I used to fly 8000 miles back in years just to go down
at her Go Deep party, Memorable parties, particularly those on John R
street, music still sticks in my mind...

Korie is the Korie that has often tag-teamed with Planet-E's Hanna. Korie
has thrown many successful events in the Eastern Mkt area, and has been
holding down a weekly for at least a year now at the Hunter House near
Harmonie Park. She plays deep house, in case you were wondering. Very good
stuff-- nice to see her on the bill.

not to be missed. seriously. he'll likely do an incredibly inventive

I fully second Ben's recommendation of Ben Bracken. Super nice guy
and very inventive - a bold and interesting sound artist.

His sometime-partner-in-crime Persona (Eric Cook) is also playing,
which is a welcome and exciting addition to the lineup. Very happy to
see Jimmy Edgar (aka Krisuit Salu from m3rck records) on the lineup
as well; somebody mentioned him a few days ago regarding Detroit
hiphop/techno connections, and this should be a nice spotlight for
him.

Really, the list of people I'm excited to see and hear is almost as
long as the lineup itself. Should be a great weekend.

I think its kind of a shame that virtually none of the consistantly
playing detroit djs (plaslaiko, gonzales, chuck flask, acidpimp, drew
madox, todd osborn...) are playing. then again, they;ll be the one's
rockin the afterpartys which are always more fun anyways.

DEFINITELY not to be missed. Will absolutely be the surprise of the
festival for a lot of people. They are noisy a la Throbbing Gristle.
They build instruments and make a fantastic racket. They rock, basically.
I'd gamble that their DEMF set will be talked about for many years.
You're nuts if you miss it.

Legenday session keyboard player and recent Moodymann collaborator - has
done a solo EP on Genuine with a KDJ remix, plus contributed to the Detroit
Experiment (including a great cover of Stevie Wonder's Too High) and is part
of Amp Dog Knights on KDJ's new Mahogani label...

> Andres?

KDJ and Moods & Grooves artist, very much in the style of Moodymann and Theo
Parrish...

> Ayro?

Detroit keyboard player/broken beat/soul artist, records for Omoa
(http://www.omoamusic.com), has done remixes for John Arnold on Ubiquity,
played keys on the Detroit Experiement, played keys in Norma Jean Bell's
live band, etc

> Peven Everett?

Now I'm just going to be lazy and copy from
http://www.redt.co.uk/triptych/biogs_mr.html

Peven Everett
With a vocal range to rival the soul music greats Peven Everett refuses to
be classified as an artist; jumping effortless between jazz, soul, deep
house, hip hop and everything else in between. He is a producer, writer,
vocalist, performer and a multi-instrumentalist, playing professionally
eleven instruments. At the age of 17, Berkley School of Music gave Peven a
full scholarship right out of High School. He left school to go on the road
with Betty Carter, Winton Marsalis and Brandford Marsalis. Latterly he
started recording deep house records with collaborative efforts on timeless
cuts like 'Watch Them Come' and the tune that kick started the whole 2-step
garage movement 'Gabriel' with Roy Davis Jr. Peven's solo stylings and live
shows are phenomenal - performing vocals with acoustic guitar and Rhodes
keyboard alongside his band, Séance Divine.

Good question!

The business! Used to plays for P-funk, Prince and others. Recently featured
on the first Mahogani record, has a new one coming out that is absolutely
stunning. Other solo stuff that is nice too. Sure to be one the hilights of
the festival.

> Andres?

Another guy with stuff on KDJ.

Jeremy Ellis of OMOA Music. Helps with John Arnold, Recloose, Detroit
Experiment, has remixed Jazzanova. He is going to knock our socks off!!!

No clue.

Of Angora and Gabrielle w/Roy Davis Jr. fame, has recently released a solo
effort that turned many heads. From house to R&B. Should be a treat.

Credited with accidentally discovering the scratch. Yes, *the* scratch.

RE: (313) Yay!!!

2003-05-02 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

some info from allmusic.com

Alder and Elias - Skam records
Amp Fiddler -

Joseph "Amp" Fiddler is a musician who has an extensive list of credits that
extends across a couple
decades. Fiddler, who produces and sings in addition to doing the bulk of his
duties on keyboards,
organs, and pianos, has played on records by Prince, the Brand New Heavies,
Ramsey Lewis, George
Clinton, the P-Funk All-Stars, the Dramatics, Primal Scream, Was Not Was, and
Too Short. With
significant help from bass-playing brother Thomas "Bubz" Fiddler (another
member of the extended
P-Funk family), Amp released With Respect on Elektra in 1990 as Mr. Fiddler.
Although the record
didn't fare well commercially, it was a solid update of '70s funk with modern
production
sensibilities. In 2002, Amp issued a 12" called Basementality on the Genuine
label. Featuring a
remix from close associate Kenny Dixon Jr. (AKA Moodymann), the record was an
even split between
modern soul and funky club music with Fiddler's talents boldly displayed

Andres - Theo/Moodyman style house
Ayro -

Alex Attias, a West London transplant who made the move from his home base of
Switzerland to be
closer to his musical heart? A producer (Bel-Air Project, Catalyst, Mustang),
label-head (Visions
Inc), and DJ, - Broken beat style stuff

Ben Bracken - avant garde guitar/electronics

  MOVEMENT STAGE

To create an intimate environment this year, the
Movement Stage, performance platform, usually atop the
Hart Plaza Amphitheater, will be dropped down to the
lip of the bowl. It will feature some of Detroits most
influential talents, as well as some newcomers and
  international guest artists.

That's really cool - now people in the bowl won't need binoculars to see
the performers

Re: (313) Kevin Saunderson

2003-05-02 Thread Chris Anglesey

Yes, I would also love to get hold of a track-list for the Deep Cyberspace
Radio CDR's
(i'm dying to find out the names of the first two tracks on D.C.R volume
1). The original
releases are CD'rs without track listings. Volume 1 is a house mix whereas
2 is your typical
Saunderson tribal/techno tackle. Also highly recommended is the Daryll
Wynn CDR which
is also available from World of Deep.

Chris.

Who ... uhm ... wot ... me? (Sorry, a week behind in 313 Digests ... again)

Can I be agnostic? I love 'em both :) (But they're very, very different)

Now what would be REALLY cool is if Detroit were like Amsterdam on
Queensday during Memorial Day weekend - i.e. a million people wandering
around the streets in downtown Detroit, people hawking wares on the sidewalks,
wearing silly inflatable orange crowns on their heads ... erm ... wait ...
I meant black and orange Tigers caps :)

Seriously, you haven't lived until you've been in Holland on Queensday.
Just the whole concept of a gazillion people out in the streets (and
not out there to protest a war or anything) having a great time (with
Techno and House sound systems on every other street corner/canal) is
mind boggling to this American. I wish I could've gone this year ... (but
I just booked my DEMF flights/hotel instead. Decisions, decisions ... )

Don't despair, Alex.
He returns to our shores on 2nd August for a gig at Plastic People, possibly
London's finest club (definitely the finest system).
Last time he played there, he played exactly the kind of set he seems to be
playing at Deep Space NYC.
You're right though, his recent Tribal and Lost sets were hardly what you would
call eclectic.

D-e-e-p listening... It's a nod to the old days Would love to experience
something like that...

Its all just simply fantastic music, irrespective of the genre...I wonder how
he mixes the tracks ? I mean Maxwell into The Congas into Pete Shelly (surely
not from The Buzzcocks ??? - don't know the song but im guessing its punky)
how is that possible ??? *scratches head*

I think a crowd would may support it, given time and an open mind.

But I cant think of many dj's that would would be brave enough to even attempt
such a set on a regular basic in a club. Might work in smaller inimate bars tho.

2003-05-02 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

the track with the woman talking about getting wooped could be the Josh
Wink "Track 9" so-called bootleg single (it's on Ovum). It uses a sample
that has been used tons of times over _ can't remember the name of the lady
who is talking but a mate of mine knows and I'll try to find out from him.
Track 9 has basically her voice and some filtered synth coming on strong
between her vocal bits and then fading back when she's doing her do. If
it's not this track I know it's the same woman doing the v.o. - she's
really raw and has been sampled for loads of stuff either in a complete
form or just for her "whoop!"

here's a link

the MLK track could be just about anything

(313) Fw: New Robert Hood Album

2003-05-02 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
Artist: Robert Hood
Title: Wire To Wire
Label: Peacefrog
Format : 2x12" / CD
Cat Number: PFG042 / PFG042CD
Release date: 30 June 2003

>From the opening bars of 'Make A Wish', the lead track on Robert Hood's new
long player 'Wire To Wire', you know you're in for a musical treat. Robert's
long association with the 'minimal sound' is well documented, and rightly
so - his 'Minimal Nation' release on Axis is still considered the benchmark
for the genre nearly 8 or so years on. But, Robert is definitely no
one-trick pony. His rare and beautiful 'Nighttime World' on Cheap is a
beautiful concoction of jazzy electronics still sought after by many non
techno / electronic music fans today.

'Wire To Wire' manages to flirt with both of these timeless classics while
still remaining fresh & original - from the beautiful & ethereal 'Make A
Wish', 'Slightly', & 'Fragile Moments', and the haunting and eerie hip-hop
beats of 'The Game' to the dubbed out futurism of 'Upon A Millennial
Moment', 'Wire To Wire' certainly gives us a glimpse into Robert's
down-tempo / electronic prowess. But it doesn't stop there, the real mark of
Robert's production talents are shown when he effortlessly manages to make
euphoric funky minimalism such as 'The Wire' & 'Aural 512' nestle perfectly
alongside. A perfectly balanced album to be enjoyed either at home or in a
club. Classic music that will stand the test of time.

Track listing:

1. Make A Wish
2. The Game
3. Upon A Millennial Moment
4. Interior suspect
5. Slightly
6. Fragile Moments
7. High Plains Drifter
8. The Age Of Eleven
9. The Wire
10. Aural 512

Make A Wish is a suitably spell-binding opening track. Delicate pizzicato
keys paint a melody which ascends and descends over restrained percussion.
Occasional deep bass booms and gently-struck ride cymbals move the track
along, contributing to the playful feel of the music.

The sound of the strings used on The Game will be familiar to followers of
Robert's work, yet they are used with extra subtlety here. They lay atop a
broken-beat, while extra layers of shimmering tones add to the atmosphere.

The deep, organic-sounding percussion of Upon A Millennial Moment continues
the rich and sensual flavour of the album. This is only amplified further
when the sweeping strings and guitar-like instrumentation are added -
providing a true jewel in the crown of this album.

There's something very majestic about the opening chords of Interior
Suspect. It's a feeling which continues to build, as further layers of sound
are added to the mix. The first 4/4 kick of the album appears shortly
afterwards, carrying the music forward into more familiar, but no less
impressive, Robert Hood territory.

Slightly begins sounding like a click track gone wrong. The rhythm can't
decide to settle - adopting a human-like uncertainty, as many different
sounds appear to take a bow whilst never really taking the lead. This
represents the is the king of linear techno going against the grain!

Again well-titled, Fragile Moments communicates just that. The opening
ambience gives way to a slow, house-paced number which is as sun-drenched as
anything you'd find on a Cafe Del Mar compilation.

There's an audible jazz-influence to the keys on High Plains Drifter -
similar to the bubbling, tonal style of Rob's harder work, but employed in a
more soaring, downtempo way here. Drums are kept to a minimum, wisely -
restricted to a subtle selection of hi-hats and soft percussive sounds.

Brooding synths bring in The Age Of Eleven, which embarks upon a wandering
path of an string-led ambience - something which could be considered a
hallmark of this album.

The Wire is one of the only tracks on the album that fires straight into a
kickdrum-led drum pattern but, regardless, the achingly melodic keys still
manage to convey a feeling of fragility. melancholy even. This track sums up
the balance at work on this album (appropriate, given the title), and
underlines Robert's considerable talent as a producer.

The slow latin-inflected percussion of Aural 512 sees the album to it's
conclusion. String flourishes dance with each other, interacting perfectly,
and closing the album in a celebratory mood.

Look out for Robert Hood's 'Omega' (PFG043) the second in Peacefrog's ultra
rare 'Private Pressing' series.

Still available: PFG026 'Who Taught You Math' 12"
PFG029 'The Art Of War' 2x12"

Soon to be re-pressed due to popular demand: PFG027 "Point Blank" 2LP / CD

i haven't been following this thread, so i do apologize if this is treaded
ground already

24k -Morgan Geist
Epoch -Morgan Geist
Jersey Chica - Morgan Geist
Just cant get enough - Morgan Geist (just kidding. it's Depeche Mode)
Ride on the Rhythm - Mahogany (unless it's that MAW redux?)
Cafe De Flore - Herbert
Without hearing it, Get on Up and Dance might be Eddie Harris (mizell
production?? macqueen? kellman? bueller?)...though the tempo would be a bit
off?
Acid Soul- Tiefschwarz
Night Birds- Shakatak (unless it's a cover)

sounds like a good mix. i'd be curious to hear it. ESPECIALLY the Shakatak
into The Rapture. that's genius.

Hmmm if any of my friends are willing to have an
'emergency' so I don't exactly have to *lie* to work
it would be appreciated. I'm also still banking on
Mark and Pete kidnapping me as they promised. I think
calling into work from a trunk gagged and blindfolded
telling them i'll be back on Monday could get me by
too. Perhaps a randsome note might do good 'send 50
Marriott Reward points in trade for young lady'.

Yeah I heard those snippets as well. Todd Osbourne had a hand in getting
these out too. They are more bootlegs than re-edits, only a few small
changes to the originals - so I was a little surpirsed to see brendan (or
perhaps the distributors/shops) putting the ectomorph name on them.

i have advance copies of a couple- the first one has an alternate mix of
"land of confusion", i was told it's called "confusion's revenge." also
has wee papa girls - "heat it up" -basically the original, added filtering
on the breakdown. also has an afx acid track thats not too old..

i heard clips of vol 2. and only recognized liaisons- los ninos.. i have
another one that i don't think is out yet which is all pretty much italo
tracks..

Re: (313) That Friday Question Part Two

2003-05-02 Thread Ramon Crespo
As I said in my earlier post. I would support it anyway, because I myself would
like people to check out my night at some point just on
pure curiosity. If they like it cool. if they don't its ok as well, but
if they like it and tell a freind and they tell a friend you know what I mean.

I'm planning on starting a night here in Miami soon its not Techno or
anything but I think it will do well because of the venue and the music.

As for the night being Techno I would definitely support it we have a serious
lack of techno nights here in Miami. I'm supporting on one Saturday's now with
DJ Stryke. It's not a pure techno night but it does
get heavy in there so it gives me my techno fix for the week otherwords I have
to listen to either live sets from the internet or myself mix.

I would love to see an experimental/minimal techno night like NYEX. I've
been buying that stuff lately and its just been blowing my mind so to hear it
out in a live setting would be nice, I'm considering incorporating some of it
into the night I'm planning here. Maybe once a month we'll do minimal techno
and more trippy experimental sounds.

Regards,
Ramon
