Re: (313) Prince (Computer Blue/Darling Nikki)
Hey I found an unreleased mix of this on Soulseek. anybody know the story on where this comes from? its got a great and very sample-able bit in the middle that goes like: (girl voice) Poor lonely computer Its time someone programmed you Its time you learned Love And lust They Both have four letters But they are entirely different words Poor lonely computer Poor lonely, lonely computer... Do you really know what love is? ...and then it gets in to this great funky funky jam. the mp3 quality sucks and I'd love to find the cd - even if it is a boot. Of course, ideally this would be great on wax!!! Free 20MB Web Site Hosting and Personalized E-mail Service! Get It Now At Doteasy.com http://www.doteasy.com/et/

If you are into old school deep house djs (unfortunately the trax tracks are few and far between, but they show up late) The End Up has failed me little. Reminiscent in vibe to Marques Wyatt's Deep in LA or Shelter or Body and Soul. Last Sunday they had Tony Humphries of Zanzibar fame. and the week b4 Timmy Regisford from Shelter ( he sucked :( ). Also this Saturday Ron Trent is playing at Club Six, and on July 25th at Club Six Steve Silk Hurley, Jesse Saunders, and Chip E. Playing together for the first time ever! The gay/straight ratio can be pretty high if that's an issue (of course then this probably wouldn't be your city or your music I imagine). Tony Humphries finished with a very deepnfunky remix of Donnie's Cloud 9 , anybody know what it is?

RE: (313) New Planet E 12 ( capsite)
I don't know but maybe it's a misunderstanding with the remix (10'') of François de Roubaix who is an old composer of movie soundtracks (like the samourai with alain delon) from the 60-70's. mat i heard through the grape vine that the vocals on Demented were sampled from and old french movie. is that true? ryan From: Mathieu Roussotte [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) New Planet E 12 ( capsite) Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 16:45:31 +0200 IMO it's a good record, but as it has been said there's nothing new. It's like the new alaska by L.Garnier (back in the old days). Innerzone orchestra, a great thing done but I wish carl had find another way to create than mixing jazz with techno., with regards and respect to all jazz fans. mat -- Faites un voeu et puis Voila ! www.voila.fr

Re: (313) john rocca
I think D.May was living in Amsterdam at the time? and I think, but can't remember, was there a dutch dj called dimitri? - did he own outland/spiritual and was d.mays hook up in Amsterdam? John: You lived in Amsterdam for a while. Why exactly did you choose to live there? Derrick: Eddy De Clercq! Eddy De Clercq was the reason that I moved to Amsterdam. Eddy brought me to Amsterdam to play my first party in (continental) Europe ever. I played in London for the very first time one month before that. When I flew to Amsterdam it was my very first time in (continental) Europe in my entire life. When I got of the airplane this guy picked me up. He was a nice guy. He took me to this nice little hotel. I'll never forget the very first time I saw Amsterdam, that very first day. It must have been designed for me to come that day to make me fall in love with the city. It must have been one of the very few days in Amsterdam history where it was over 30°C. The sun was shining, it was beautiful! It was just too unreal! It was like the city of enchantment, the gingerbread city; it wasn't real. I remember that I said that very moment: 'I'm going to live here.' I said that immediately at that moment. I played a party at the Roxy that night and that would be one of my very first experiences playing clubs. In Detroit I had played only four or five parties in clubs. I played in London and a few small clubs in England, but I hadn't played any proper clubs outside the Music Institute, which had only just closed. No wait, the Music Institute was still open at that time. So to come to Europe and play a party in a major club like the Roxy, that was an event for me. That was monumental stuff. Back in that time you didn't approach a nightclub with the idea you were only going to play two hours. I didn't even know about that concept of two hours until I went to Germany for the first time. I was playing and the guy said to me: 'Ok, it's my turn now.' I said: 'What do you mean, it's my turn? I never heard about anybody having a turn. I'm the guest and that means that I have the right to play as long as I want.' It should be. Unfortunately it's not. You've got local guys who want to play after you. It's ridiculous. I didn't understand that. That was what made me fall in love with Amsterdam, it was the way Eddy treated me, the way he made me feel comfortable. He showed me around Amsterdam, just everything. He was just the nicest guy you could possibly imagine. It completely changed my whole perspective of the way I lived my own life and the way I wanted to live. Eddy De Clercq was that important to me at that moment and he became a good friend of mine too. That's why I moved to Amsterdam. (c) 2003 Technotourist.org I don´t know if the outland was owned by dj dimirti.. but dimitri did some really great sets in those days. Cheers, Maarten

Does anyone else have any books they could recommend? Last good music book I read was Adventures on the Wheels of Steel: The Rise of the Superstar DJs by Dave Haslam: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1841154334/qid=1057157863/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_3_3/026-4611651-9246805 It covers a suprising breadth of ground, not concentrating necessarily on big names, but also on the people who play for their own satisfaction. Dave Haslam, the Hacienda's resident DJ for years and years, is well placed in Manchester, where much of the ground-breaking work has been done over the years, from Jimmy Saville becoming the first big-name DJ (he relates that he never had any trouble at his club - troublemakers always had sideburns and if anyone turned up with sideburns the bouncers there had some clippers under the counter and if they let them shave them off they could come in), through clubs like the Reno, the Spinning Wheel and the Hacienda. There is even a rather odd chapter about the guy who DJs at a Smiths night, ticking off every track he plays on a checklist, with his mum charging on the door. Amazon are linking this one with another nice book, Adventures in Wonderland: A Decade of Club Culture by Sheryl Garratt, which captures a more international picture, with great historical details about the rise of techno in Detroit and house music in Chicago from disco from the Paradise Garage in New York, as well as the UK rave scene and Ibiza. Re: (313) Subject: Re: (313) Music and the Mind
There is even a rather odd chapter about the guy who DJs at a Smiths night, ticking off every track he plays on a checklist... I know a guy who actually does this - at least when I had a DJ night with him. He was a miserable git, completely afraid of touching something he wasn't supposed to on the mixer - not knowing how a mixer worked, totally afraid of anything technological, only into Brit pop (but only played CDs), swaggering all over the place like some dapper playboy from the 60s. He was like an oily used car salesman (if I remember correctly, that's what his dad actually did). Now he was just voted reader's choice for best club DJ by the local alternative paper. All of the people who know him (and aren't fooled by his facade) are convinced it was ballot box stuffing - he's got a huge mailing list. Now he uses that in his adverts in said paper. Twat. RE: (313) Was (Not Was)
Read the fine print, (from memory here?) it says something like remixing by Ken Collier over to the right of Tell Me that I'm Dreaming or something. Remix isn't by Was (not was) as you might assume from the title. I didn't even know Collier was involved with them until recently. Cool! Who else did he remix.. ? Spottin' with a magnifying glass (sorry), Matt PS - I agree 'WHEEL ME OUT' is also a jam!!! -Original Message- From: jurren baars [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2003 10:41 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Was (Not Was) Matthew MacQueen wrote: Don't forget the very nice 'out come the freaks' dub on the flip. (313) Rick Wilhite in Chicago tonight
Subterranean 2011 W. North Avenue (@ Damen) Wednesday July 2 Soulphonetics Boo Williams * Glenn Underground * Rick (Godson) Wilhite http://www.subt.net/ 773.278.6600 Don't know if there is cover charge or what, but this is a small-ish bar/live venue in Wicker Park. Never been on a Wednesday, but I actually love this space. This is where we threw the gig when CiM and Clair did the deFocus mini-US tour. It's nice intimate (non clubby) vibe, lights down low, and drinks are cheap. The Cabaret Room upstairs has 2 levels and really nice sightlines to the stage and dancefloor from the second (kind of U-shaped) balcony floor. From their website: Subterranean of Chicago is located in the heart of Wicker Park Bucktown in a 3-story, 110-year-old building. It's upstairs 'Cabaret Room' was host to a brothel during the 1920's, while 'the Lounge' on the 1st floor was a 'wire room' for gambling. When the guests needed to flee the authorities, they escaped through the basement's underground passage (now boarded up) which led into a tunnel allowing access to the Coyote building across the street.
