yes this album is awesome, NYC art-rock tension with jerky funk. I
also loved the whole 'stop making sense' movie and LP. And I'm usually
not a fan of live recordings unless they're really special.. and this
one was.

From 1983 there was the outstanding (and probably my personal favorite)
'Speaking In Tongues' LP with some very funky melodic tracks. It kicks
off with Burning Down the House, but I prefer the b-side, every track
is strong. Like 'slippery people' (later covered by The Staple
Singers!), 'This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)', and 'Pull Up the
Roots' which is basically a quirky disco track...
mixes like butta with New World Aquarium 'Tresspassers' on Delsin.. you
gotta try it if you have both of these... freaky good combo.

but don't listen to me, all I play is 80s music ;)

(313) slightly OT - suspended DJ tables

2003-08-01 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

I just played a gig last night that had a DJ table suspended from the
ceiling - I've seen these before but never played on one set up this way.
Rather odd and it took a while to get used to - never did feel 100%
comfortable with it, as when I would back-cue the record it would send the
whole platform swinging back and forth.
I can see how this suspension system is great for protecting the turntables
from bass rumbling and energetic DJs dancing around but I felt like I was
riding a ship on the high seas all night.
(also the thing was set low around hip-level on me so my back cramped up
but that's beside the point)

anyone else play have experience playing on a hanging DJ table?
I'd like to know how you've coped with it as I wouldn't mind playing at
this venue again since the crowd was up for hearing fast music as one
patron asked. heh-heh. :D

omg - LOL!!! did they have two on separate platforms? I'm imagining them

hmmm - only experience I had similar to that was using ones that were
suspended by very thick rubber-band kinda straps it took some getting
used to. when doing delicate things I would hold the unit steady with
one hand and work with the other, otherwise the whole thing would go
'boing'! eventually I got used to the sensitivity of them and just
approached them with a lighter touch than non-suspended ones. was kinda
freaky tho'.

Re: (313) slightly OT - suspended DJ tables

2003-08-01 Thread MM
well out here in portland, OR clubs make a regular pratice of suspending
turntables.i have played on MANY suspended setups...alothought i prefer
the ol cinderblock setup from the ol days when parties were in
warhouses.in my opinion suspended tables work ok if it is really done
right ...there are so many ways to suspend them,it just has to be done in an
intelligent wayi mean i have seen people do it and it is just a mess...but
i have played on like 3 really good setups that were just as fine as a regular
setup or on cinderblocksyou always have to watch your touch so if you like
to thrash around and stuff then i would'nt recommend itbut its always
kinda funny to watch someone like TRAXX get crazy with a suspended setup and
tonearms go flying around, slider caps are falling everywhere..i
personally like a solid setup of some sort cause ultimatly you feel
groundedbut if you have a small club or something sometimes suspended
table can work alright.

needles NEVER skipped even from the huge jungle bass.

Ah, that would be the trick in preventing the dramatic swinging - anchor
line to the floor. If I get the chance I'll make that suggestion to the
manager.

I did notice that even with the swinging the needles didn't skip - which
surprised me (happily).

thanks for that info

anyone else play have experience playing on a hanging DJ table?
I'd like to know how you've coped with it as I wouldn't mind playing at
this venue again since the crowd was up for hearing fast music as one
 patron asked. heh-heh. :D

I can't stand them. I like the mixer to stay put when I jack it. :) Also
don't like spring-loaded tables. Yuck!

(313) Attention spotters!

2003-08-01 Thread Tom Churchill
Just got this from a friend...

have discovered an amazing old deep house record, but the only info I have
about it is from a white label copy which has LB104 etched into it.

Believe me, you would also want a copy of this tune.

But can't for the life of me think what LB would stand for... The style of
the tune is kind of old-school and bleepy, could be an old Chicago thing cos
it has a sort of Fingers can you feel it-style sample in it, but i think it
might be a new york thang...

Have tried discogs and google, but don't know where else to search only
 knowing the catalogue number?

...any of you champion spotters got any tips?

Cheers,

Tom

Everyone gets really excited about this, but really, using this
is no different than a faderbox, except for the pretty colored lights.
As someone who actually plays live with computers, I'd think the
main attraction is to associate some physical activity and colored
lights with what are really conventional manipulations of musical
elements.

And technically, it's some sort of magnetic sensor grid, that outputs
the position of 3 or 4 pucks. There's nothing that exciting or
cutting edge about the programming either. It's a cool grad-student
project but nothing earth-shattering.

Re: (313) Audiopad - meet the future of midi control

Ok it might not be all that earth-shattering from a _programming_ level but
from an _interactive/performance presentation_ level I do think it will
open doors to the next step.
Imagine having these pads all over a room where people could walk up and
remix/mix your music live. It's intuitive - more so than most computer
interfaces.

The colored lights aspect does make it hell of a lot more fun to watch and,
I would think, to use - I would imagine it would satisfy/stimulate the
tactile/sensory parts of your brain.
And come on - it's very futuristic in appearance.

I'd like to know - if you had a choice of watching the *exact same musical
performance*, would you rather:

a) watch someone sit behind a grey laptop where you could not see the
manipulations and they moved very little if at all

or

b) watch someone control the music using this device and could see what
they were doing and with color, shape, and movement represent the musical
elements

it's like when Kraftwerk comes out from behind their stands to play Pocket
Calculator - they could easily stay back but it's the presentation that
makes the difference. And people look forward to that moment.

music - like all art - relies on its presentation

IMO it's pretty forward thinking
