(313) Soma records - subdivision?

2003-08-26 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Is anyone aware of a sub-label of Soma Quality Recordings that released
downtempo/breakbeat type records around 1997?
I just found one at my local shop but don't remember the name of the
artist(s) on it or the name of the label. It was a 2x12 of some downtempo,
sort of breakbeat/trip-hop type stuff but there were two really choice
Detroit influenced downbeat techno tracks.

just looking for info on any sub-labels of Soma that might have existed.
I've checked the Soma website but can't find anything on other labels.

2003-08-26 Thread john arnold

Hello list,

Does anybody know if:

1. Ableton and Final Scratch can be used at the same time on the same
computer?

2. Does Ableton allow you to record midi information on the fly? i.e. live
keyboards that can be played and looped at the same time.

3. Has anybody used the mpc control pad with Ableton and how is it?

4. How is the u-controller?

thanks,
john

I've come across that sub-label myself before and I think I might own some

 1. Ableton and Final Scratch can be used at the same time on

I was able to run Ableton an Traktor at once, and since FS now runs in
special version of traktor it should be possible.

 2. Does Ableton allow you to record midi information on the

No.
There's version 3 coming out soon, and maybe it will add midi support.

I have a whitelabel on Fenetik by Daniel Ibbotson. It features three diverse
tracks - a moody electro-ish song with female vocals, a housey downbeat
track and a John Tejada remix of this track on the b-side. It isnt a bad
record if you can hunt it down, especially for the female vox track.

i always thought fenetik was affiliated with glasgow underground.

but than from what I've heard
ableton runs really slowly on OSX.

It runs like a dream on my machine, I've had no problems with it at all...

Back to the original question - I can't see any reason why you couldn't run
Live and FinalScratch at the same time under OSX - FinalScratch has its own
audio hardware/interface so Live could use the Mac's internal audio output
or a second audio interface...

Tom

Now i knew nothing about this DVD thing, but as far as im concerned its just

If he wasn't DJing then he was pretending to DJ for a couple of hrs!

I must admit I did wonder what was goin on at first when he appeared on the
screen but wasn't actually on the stage, but after a while the lights came
on Jeff waved to the crowd.
What I want to know is why he disappeared for half an hour let Bicknel

RE: (313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix

2003-08-26 Thread Robert Taylor
Maybe you're too short (;-) but you could plainly see what he was doing on the
stage and he was DJing - unless he makes a great show of switching things on
and off. If he does, he must p*** his missus off switching on and off
lightswitches round the hous

10 mins at a time hey?-well i didn't time it but i remember it being longer
then that.

Are you sure he was djing or just switching the video display off? How do you
know? There was no camera on the decks and you couldn't see the desks way back
and up on the stage.

I don't understand why you felt cheated.
They only showed the DVD twice for about 10 minutes at a time
 - Mills mixed into and out of the DVD segments live. The
publicity claimed that Mills would be previewing his DVD and
that's exactly what he what he was doing - he wasn't
cheating. Only the DVD segments were pre-recorded - the rest
was Mills mixing live, though it wasn't the most inspiring of sets

Lost was pretty cool night no doubt, great atmosphere, better
venue then heaven, except for one thing. I was dancing
around then i saw Jeff on the screen, went closer to the
front and noticed he was actually wearing a different shirt
to the video. The music was in time with the video and fader
movements, so wtf was happening at the decks? Where they even
on? Was that even Jeff there? At that point i and others felt
 cheated and just left.

Now i knew nothing about this DVD thing, but as far as im
concerned its just cheating and being *^*^* lazy. Why didn't
they just put up a cardboard cut-out and play a DAT tape?

(313) re: Subject: Larry Heard Track ID

2003-08-26 Thread David Hampson
I recognise this from the description and I'm sure its something I have - my
first thought was that it could possibly be a Black Lodge 7 which is based on
a track on the Dumbo soundtrack (I think the title is Pink Elephants on
Parade but someone may correct me) - its in old recycled 7 pop sleeves
stamped with a black bull shape... but I'm starting to think its something
else now...

You may still get the Black Lodge 7 from Piccadilly records - even if its not
the same track I think you will like this one!

David

Towards the end of Larry Heard's set on Friday, he played this track which
intros like (for lack of a better term) evil cartoon music. It's got
alternating down and offbeat bassoon, and maybe clarinet, in a boomp baamp
booomp baaamp boomp baamp bomp bamp [repeat] fashion (imagine
weeble-wobbles, but with knee-less legs, marching up a hill in procession
swaying back and forth, quickly). It then busts out into this full-on cut-up
big band sample with a few lyrics, the only one that stuck in my mind was
crazy. I suspect it may even be a white label remix of Brian Setzer
Orchestra or something. It is really cool and I want it. Know what it is?

 Hello Michael,

I've come across that sub-label myself before and I think I might own
some
stuff out on it too. But I can't remember what, I will go home and have a
look and report back. However, it strikes me that Lars Sandberg's Chaser
project, sounds like it might fit into your descriptions of what the
label
 puts out ...?

Is anyone aware of a sub-label of Soma Quality Recordings that released
 downtempo/breakbeat type records around 1997?
I just found one at my local shop but don't remember the name of the
artist(s) on it or the name of the label. It was a 2x12 of some
downtempo,
sort of breakbeat/trip-hop type stuff but there were two really choice
 Detroit influenced downbeat techno tracks.

just looking for info on any sub-labels of Soma that might have existed.
I've checked the Soma website but can't find anything on other labels.

RE: (313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix

2003-08-26 Thread John Osselaer
Ok, it's shameless self-promo, but it might help clearing things up a
bit. Here's an extract from an interview I did with Jeff last year
around this time.

TT: You just mentioned disappearing and reappearing. At Sonar I saw you
disappear at some point, but the music kept playing and there were
images of you playing records. I was pretty confused by that. Was that
done on purpose or did you just need to go to the loo?

Jeff: (laughs) No, that was on purpose. It was designed so that at one
point the film would take over. At a certain point there was no need for
me to be on the stage. Once the film took over I left and stood on the
side and watched for my cue to come back up and take over from the film.
That was like a test as well, to see if the people would be able to
continue on with the party if say something was simulated. That was an
experiment. I don't think it worked out so well because the venue was so
large that the people in the middle or the back couldn't see anyway. We
tried it once before in Tokyo and it was the same thing. At first the
people were confused, they didn't understand where I had gone, but the
music was still playing and there was still this image of me playing on
the screen. What I had hoped to get from that was the indication that
the people wouldn't mind dancing to an image and that would lead us into
this holograph thing where at a certain point they would actually be
dancing to a simulation of myself or multiple DJs.

Sorry but pre-recorded just doesn't cut it.

I recognise this from the description and I'm sure its something I have -
my first thought was that it could possibly be a Black Lodge 7 which is
based on a track on the Dumbo soundtrack (I think the title is Pink
Elephants on Parade but someone may correct me) - its in old recycled 7
pop sleeves stamped with a black bull shape... but I'm starting to think
its something else now...

You may still get the Black Lodge 7 from Piccadilly records - even if its
not the same track I think you will like this one!
