Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
i think it's easiest to describe detroit techno if you describe the prototype records and dont worry about how it's evolved and branched off over the years. ie strings (!), soulfulness, depth, experimentation, futurism etc etc. you dont have to worry about giving a picture perfect description. thats what people have ears for. and like any other genre of music you need a bit of context to get the point across. somebody who is unfamiliar with dance music isnt going to be immediately open to the nuances, they will need some reference points. screw it, just give them a copy of techno rebels and a tape/cd. that's what i've done more than once. jt _ Get rid of annoying pop-up ads with the new MSN Toolbar FREE! http://toolbar.msn.com/go/onm00200414ave/direct/01/

On topic: lots of 313 connections on Phthalo: PH04 (later licensed to Mille Plateaux) is from Crank aka Low Res who worked with Juan Atkins on a couple of the cuts on his Mind And Body album--the title cut and Psychosomatic, which was also the B side to the Be Brave single. PH38 from Mimi + Boyd is a project of Mark Vapourspace Gage and Michelle Punisher Hermann, and the forthcoming PH40 Consumer Vs. User from Andrew Duke is partly dedicated to the late great James Stinson (also the late great Chep Nunez, who did many a fine edit for people such as Mantronix) and features a remix of 313 list member Phonopsia's Frosting. Vladislav Delay released an album on Phthalo as Sistol way back when he was just starting out; recommended for those who dig his material on Chain Reaction. Kit Clayton and Gerald Wenzell's stuff might also be of interest to 313ers. The biggest thing about Phthalo is variety, though, so there is also a lot of experimental material. My album is varied: electro, techno (some of it with a Detroit-ey vibe), downtempo, experimental, etc. Hope this info helps. Lots of posts from you today, MEK! :) Take care. (313) fsk - first take then shake
this sounds really interesting...anyone heard it? i used to hear fsk on the radio here in chapel hill quite a bit, cool stuff, but it's been ages. http://www.diskob.com/c/fsk/db123.html F.S.K. are still the most invited non-english band to attend Peel-sessions and are one of the few german bands besides Can who were granted an entry in a book called the Unknown Legends of Rock'N'Roll. In February 2003 they went to Uphon Studio/Weilheim with engineer Mario Thaler (The Notwist, Tied + Tickled Trio) for the fourth time and recorded their new album with one half of the tracks being instrumentals and the other half (again) songs with lyrics. The roughmixes of these songs were sent to the Detroit-based afro-american techno/house legend Anthony Shake Shakir. F.S.K goes afro-germanic. In september Shakir flew to Munich with his sampler and one more week was spend together with the band in Weilheim producing First Take Then Shake. A band Photograph was shot in front of the legendary BMW building: motor cities united. The first praise of this unusual cooperation already appeared in the most important german music magazines months before the album's release. _ Check out MSN PC Safety Security to help ensure your PC is protected and safe. http://specials.msn.com/msn/security.asp

(thats on novamute I think) alex eh...the remixes of 'fun to be had' and 'getting closer' are much more rawer, harder and esential-er than the mayday mix of 'shame' (in my ever so humble opinion) and yeah, I was around for 'join in the chant' its first time on the dance floors... =)
RE: (313) fsk - first take then shake
John Peel played this last week. It was OK - the only real Shake influence I could hear was on the drum track. -Original Message- From: J. T. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 25 March 2004 16:29 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) fsk - first take then shake this sounds really interesting...anyone heard it? i used to hear fsk on the radio here in chapel hill quite a bit, cool stuff, but it's been ages. http://www.diskob.com/c/fsk/db123.html F.S.K. are still the most invited non-english band to attend Peel-sessions and are one of the few german bands besides Can who were granted an entry in a book called the Unknown Legends of Rock'N'Roll.

(313) Dublin Electronic Art Festival seeks writers
DEAF IN PRINT Now in its 3rd year, the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival is currently seeking writers to contribute to the first of two official festival publications for 2004. Designed by our resident designer Niall Sweeney, DEAF In Print will be published in two parts. Part 1 will be launched in June 2004 to coincide with the start of the festival's Summer Programme when 1 copies will be distributed free of charge in record clothes shops, cafes, music venues and bars throughout Dublin, Galway, Cork and Waterford. DEAF In Print will also be distributed internationally as part of the promotion campaign for DEAF 2004. DEAF In Print is intended to encourage greater dialogue about the electronic arts in an Irish context; however, all subjects relating to the electronic arts past, present and future - in Ireland and elsewhere - will be considered. Contributions may be submitted in any format or style, although it is preferred that they emphasise a discursive approach rather than adopting the more traditional artist feature / interview format. Contributions must be in by 30th April 2004. Further details can be obtained by contacting the Dublin Electronic Arts festival @ [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: (313) billy corrigan meets nitzer ebb
there was a night at Motor, somewhere in 99(?) when the Smashing Pumpkins showed up and were chilling in the back afterhours. Just so happenes that Douglas McCarthy from Nitzer Ebb was hang out that night as well (i guess he's got some family thing happening in detroit) Don;t know if they actually met before the cops came. =) On Thu, 25 Mar 2004, jonathan morse wrote: I was thumbing through mojo magazine tonight and came across a blurb about bon harris from nitzer ebb producing billy corrigan's new solo album. it mentioned a track by the name of 'join in the chant' but didn¹t say if it was a cover/remake or not. anyone heard anything about this?
(313) Carl Craig vs. Adult in new Appleseed movie
Was just watching the trailer for the new CG Appleseed movie being produced in Japan and noticed mentions of Carl Craig vs Adult and Akufen among other electronic artists (Jokenfold) in the soundtrack. http://www.apple.co.jp/quicktime/trailers/appleseed_large.html Hadn't seen it mentioned before on-list, so apologies if it's been covered already. I thought the original Appleseed was a bit of a snore-fest . . . will be interesting to see what direction this one takes. - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno

Definitely some dope tracks on it... btw theo starts his monthly tonight @ APT in nyc! yeah.. morgan geist is also playing. - Original Message - From: Maarten Baute [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Scott K Ellis [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313 List (E-mail) 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2004 10:27 AM Subject: Re: (313) Theo Parrish - Parallel Dimensions - Ubiquity repress Anyone have this record from 2000? Sound's enticing. http://www.ubiquityrecords.com/theo_parrish.html Ubiquity: Frustratingly for many dance music lovers only 1000 copies were ever released on CD and no full length album was ever pressed. I don´t know what they´ve been eating, but I and many other people have this on vinyl. This record was widely available at the time so I don´t know why they are repressing it on a different label. http://www.discogs.com/release/1302 Cheers, Maarten
Re: (313) Theo Parrish - Parallel Dimensions - Ubiquity repress
i have the SS009 double pack, very nice stuff. ill probably have to buy this again on vinyl though with the previously unreleased joints am i the only person dork enough to buy it on double vinyl *and* the Sound Signature CD to get ALL the tracks? Hats off to Ubiquity for spreading the love though, didn't know he only made 1000 CDs? Ya never know how well it will sell I suppose, I must have got it from RecordTime.. you know 1000 CDs can actually be a lot for small label dance music... My favorite cuts are Serengeti Echoes and Violet Green . Also that first Sound Signature compilation CD is sweet.. great round-up of the early releases. Ubiquity should do the world a favor and re-issue that on CD too. I guess I was destined to have it, because I loaned it to a friend, who had his car broken into and the stereo and CDs all stolen, then later found by cops, returned to friend, and then CD returned back to me (case shattered, but who cares the music still plays). It's got Moonlight, Shadow Dancing, Dusty Cabinets... and the spookiest creepiest coolest foggiest super-freaky-deeper-than-deep Dance of the Drunken Drums. peace -- Matt MacQueen http://SonicSunset.com
