It's not like people are buying tickets in advance.

Putting on a festival in Detroit is super hard, I can se ethat.
There is no money coming from the city of Detroit, even the
African American
museum is in huge debt.
I mean in places like here there are government resources
available for
things like electronic festivals and even then people don't get
it together!

yeah, ive found it difficult to criticise really. i mean, im going
up to detroit that weekend no matter who is playing, and i think
alot of people feel that way. as long as its going on ill be
there. and you can be pretty much guaranteed they wont be booking
crap like oakenfold or whatever. ive never seen anything else free

set friday night was uninspired, predictable (due to previous talk on here
of his dropping out of space, nirvana, white stripes, funky breaks, etc.),
and in some parts downright crappy. he's usually so good at walking he
fine line between techno and trance-- fri. night he stumbled right into
the cheesy side. maybe he was drunk. touch your nose, laurent, and then
recite the alphabet backwards. in any case, out of the 4 or so hours that
he played, an added total of only about an hour and a half wound up
sounding like i was sure it would. and that's adding up all the times he
went back and forth between sounding cheesy and sounding like laurent
(which came in 30min snippets). being one of the people that was
convinced he could do no wrong, i sure was let down. what happen???
guess i'll go back to listening to the detroit disc of his box set and

trying to relive the magic that was that night.

honestly it was my first garnier experience and i thought he was great.
my only complaint was the sound system at sound-bar. It was poor and he
was really pushing it. I thought he played some really nice deep and
melodic techno. The first hour I dont think I heard a single record from
this decade. It was great to finally hear Emotion Content. Windchime
sounded amazing and I think its going to get a lot of play in the course
of the next few months.

I had decided on Friday to go and I was lucky enough to find a cheap
flight from Miami and I had the time of my life. Here's some of the
songs I was able to remember him playing add some more if you remember.

nirvana - lithium
white stripes - 7 nation army
new order - confusion (koma and bones mix)
mad mike and perception - windchime
dj rolando - aguila
funk d'void - emotional content
prodigy - out of space
anthony rother - body talk?
nitzerebb - murderous (phil kieran mix)
marshall jefferson - move your body
laurent garnier - the man with the red face

I also heard a few things off his excess luggage cd as well that was
nice to be able to hear those records out as well. I just hope that next
time he comes a little closer to home or that Miami wakes up and books
him at a nice venue. I think he would be great here since he crosses
genre's so well. I thought he was relentless techno for the most part
and he was always really energetic behind the turntables.

Looking forward to Movement 2004.

So, maybe I'm slow on the draw but...

Kraftwerk Aerodynamik Remixes

Kling Klang Dynamik mix -- almost the same as the original with a more
atmospheric intro, and a few different pad overlays. Nice to have if you
don't have the album on vinyl, but nothing earth-shaking.

Alex Gopher/Etienne De Crecy mix -- can you say Acid? I guess acid is the
new old thing these days. This works in a fairly cynical, dance floor
manipulative way, but not sure I like it. I might play it, but I'd feel
cheap afterwards ;-)

Francois K Areo mix -- subtly different than the original, but builds
nicely. Not equal to the FK 'Tour De France' remix but after all, what is?
I've started buying anything I see that he mixed or edited, which will probably
involve some disappointment and heartbreak, but the man is a scientist.

missed a trick by not trying to get the original re-released - the original

Don't know this track but i like 'sleeper in metropolis', i dig the whole
raw electronics and poetry type thing - i think cold/dark wave it might be
called.

I suppose being a fan of vladimir m/terrace production this is some of the
only stuff i can file under my interpretation of this category.

It's interesting how this dark view of the future contrast is in contrast to
the early techno 'future is great' vibe as discussed recently. Maybe these
thoughts are more relevant for today.

Isn't the problem with early techno more due to the fact of how fast
technology has moved on tho, it must be murder trying to write Sci-Fi these
days, even if you re-read some of Gibson's early books it amazing how dated
they've become.

Yeah, admittedly the Space Odyssey series veered off, but then again, 2001
is an absolute masterpiece, so at least it started well.

His short stories, and other novels are pretty mindblowing.

2004-05-04 Thread alex . bond

can someone explain to me the attraction people have to 'our darkness'

I heard it in a club not long ago.
and now I need one!! I don't need it for £45 though. £45, sheesh.

I heard Environ were doing Gaz Nevada's Special Agent Man soon (dunno where
I heard that), that's one I can't fathom out, so I know what you mean.
I dunno, different things float different peoples boats though I guess.

just thinking now, I was totally unaware that there were any edits of it,
maybe I heard an edit?

or maybe not.

what came first, the chicken or the egg?

all these things I'll never know the answer to.

yeah i don't have a problem with the Anne Clarke themes/mood of the
piece as much as the sounds and sound design itself,,, they're thin and
shrill just sound so dated now... unlike a lot of dark/synth music from
that era which still holds up fairly well. THe percussion is weak,
etc. THis coming from someone who it could be argued plays 'dated'
records a lot... hahh

anyway, different strokes

there is definately a Dark Comedy album separate from the Narcessist.

Not sure on the release schedule (or who is doing it) but Kenny dropped me
a review copy, so i know its real

heard it from some dude who works at a label that was considering the albums
before peacefrog, but maybe he's mistaken. and since i now count 3 albums
being mentioned, maybe there is still at least 1 more out there.

i really like the idea of a techno blues style even if its just a new name
for something thats been around...i've always heard a lot of the blues
feeling in lots of the deepest (and my favorite) detroit stuff, and finally
here is a nice marketing name for it...plus i just love the idea of some
super walter davis inspired techno or something..my favorite theo stuff has
a lot of blues in it i think..

I've heard that one of the other 2 lps is a Dark Comedy album. Don't know
 much more than that though.

Seriously though - anyone have anymore details on the other 2 lps? e.g.
when they're due, who's releasing them, style etc.

sure! there's definitely a conceptual argument there. but even
beyond that,
i hear some of the same sort of notes, tonality, musical ideas,
in some
stuff. i dont know enough about music to describe it more
clearly. but for
instance theo's heal yourself and move has a piano riff that
very much
reminds me of old blues...and tho it's not uniquely techno,
portamento and
pitchbend can remind back to blues a lot...i dunno, i hear a lot
of the same
feelings coming thru, but maybe it's just because i have heard so
much
blues..

the blues is pretty much the grandfather of modern music anyway.
nearly everything has been influenced by it in some way: rock,
heavy metal, funk, soul, hiphop, jazz, reggae/ska, etc etc. it
might not be immediately apparent, but everything sort of goes
back to it in the continuum of music. it would only make sense for
house and techno to draw from it as well.

my guess would be that one or more key acts/events are still being
finalized, and they don't wanna announce without them. I noticed that the

I don't think so. I understand the frustration but...
It's not like people are buying tickets in advance.
And even people from os are going for a fest, not a particular
 act.
Putting on a festival in Detroit is super hard, I can se ethat.
There is no money coming from the city of Detroit, even the
 African American
 museum is in huge debt.
I mean in places like here there are government resources
 available for
things like electronic festivals and even then people don't get
 it together!

yeah, ive found it difficult to criticise really. i mean, im going
up to detroit that weekend no matter who is playing, and i think
alot of people feel that way. as long as its going on ill be
there. and you can be pretty much guaranteed they wont be booking
crap like oakenfold or whatever. ive never seen anything else free
planned on such a large scale, so i dont even know who if anyone
can really understand exactly what goes into doing the festival.
