There is one 'unreleased mix' I really would like to get on vinyl. The
Unreleased Mix of Strings of Life, released only on
Retro Techno / Detroit Definitive -compilation on Network Records.. It
is by far the best mix of 'Strings' - beats don't come in until the end
and the piano loop seems to go on forever..

I always found this strange because if it was unreleased, doesn't releasing
it negate the unreleased part of the title?

I keep thinking it means 'previously unreleased' :)

Seconded - Great to read the words of the man himself. The more I find out
about UR, the stranger it seems.

We don't make music in search of fame and fortune. We make it when we feel
like it. That can be extremely frustrating for artists on the label.

Who is the 'we' in this quote? Doesn't this seem circular? It's the artists
who make the tunes, and they put them out when they feel like it - no
problem, yeah?

There's other strange stuff detailing the internal politics of UR, but I
don't want to over-analyze my heroes. It's just...interesting to think about
how things go down internally in UR.

This warms the heart though:

If you're an assault DJ, we feel you got skills, manners, respect...

God, I'm full of uselessness today...

straight outta my bag of terror

An Evening With Elliot Eastwick

Talk Film screening
Wednesday 9 June, 6.30pm
£5/ £3.50 concessions
Urbis, Manchester
Morrissey, Marr and Motown; Iggy Pop's early performances in Manchester and
their influence on Ian Curtis; Mike Pickering exploding the myth that
London led the way in House music with deft ease and humour. Elliot
Eastwick's film is 45 minutes of celluloid (well, the digital equivalent
of?) that no music fan should miss.
Urbis is giving you a unique opportunity to view The Sounds of Two Cities
in the company of director and internationally acclaimed DJ Elliot
Eastwick, with a chance to thrash out the many issues the film throws up.
What's the connection between the Smiths and Motown?
In The Sounds of Two Cities Johnny Marr tells us that the drums in There
is a Light that Never Goes Out are stolen directly from a track by the
Elgins.
Marr also confirms the legend of the first time he met Morrissey is, in
fact, completely true.
Drawing on the lines of comparison between the two cities of Manchester and
Detroit, Eastwick will examine the impact of a transatlantic re-absorption
of music styles which has taken place between the two cities.
Elliot Eastwick was the last DJ to play a record at the Hacienda. This is
your chance to discuss the impact of Detroit music on Manchester and vice
versa with one of the major players in today's scene.
Places are very limited and booking is essential.
Call our Box Office on 0161 907 9099 to reserve your place.

Re: (313) burial mix reply

2004-05-27 Thread jason kenjar

First of all- for all those interested in the Burial label and are
considering investing in the Artist's / Version LPs -

I headed to the record store the other day where I listened to a short
sample of the first two tracks on the artist's LP. I could tell that
the sound was very clear, but it lacked the overall power of monster
deep compressed bass being pumped through the speakers. Within 20
seconds I was totally convinced that the LP just gave up too much of
what I loved in the burial sound.

If you just want the songs (I like most them! ) on vinyl for a cheap
rate and/or you aren't up for searching out the individual 10s, get
the LPs. But it just kills me to pay a shade under $40 for two 12
vinyl's of second generation Burial material with the crust already cut
off. I'd rather keep looking for those 10 records with the magical
pressings, rather than a crowded LP with a weaker press.

Going into the record store with this on my mind, I wasn't expecting
the LP pressing to be exactly the same as the 10, but how close would
it get? This isn't a small time, nickel and dime record label (bless
them !), or some crazy rouge bootleg squadron. Moritz and his
mysterious entourage have proven themselves as a combination of
successful business people, gifted artists, and technological
innovators. Anything is possible with those guys, perhaps they have a
type of vinyl pressing machine that could save me the trouble and money
of shipping the little records in from all over the place? nah...not

Mate, not this or any other time! You're talking about physics. It's simply
not possible to have the same sound on a 5-track 12 side as it is on a
one-track 10 side. I mean, just look at the things side-by-side - they are
physically very different. It's like expecting a guitar the size of your arm
to sound like a Strat.

My opinion is that I really like single-piece LPs, and they are a rare thing
these days. You lose amplitude (volume), but you gain a nice 'item'. Worth
it, for me. The 10s are still being pressed, so what's the problem?

Best,

Andrew

Just knit picking here, but these pressings have 4 tracks per side. I
knew it wouldn't be the same as my normal pressings I buy (1-2 a side)
but i was hoping that 4 tracks, each off a 10 to one 12 would not
depreciate too much beyond what I was used to, but it did.
I can only thank the laws of physics for that. What's with mother

My opinion is that I really like single-piece LPs, and they are a rare
thing

these days. You lose amplitude (volume), but you gain a nice 'item'.

My biggest disappointment was when I found out they were pressing 8
tracks on one record. It so happens I'm missing every release on the
LP. If it was a double Ip could have used that to complete my
collection in two foul swoops. my pov! I have seen a lot of hip hop
single LPs around though if that fits your bag

Worth
it, for me. The 10s are still being pressed, so what's the problem?

I never see them around here, does anybody know who in the midwest USA
stocks these records on the regular?Seems like everyones got the LPs
but the 10s are scare.

Best,

Andrew

PS. Happy birthday.

thanx

Detroit, May 28, 2004 As part of the 2004 Movement Festival, Ann Arbor¹s
Ghostly International and Diesel-U-Music presents The Three Fates, a party
in the beautiful Crystal Ballroom of the Masonic Temple featuring the US
debut of Germany¹s Alter Ego, Geoff White/Aeroc (live), Matthew Dear (live
PA performance), Midwest Product, and DJs Osborne and Ryan Elliott.

Headlining are German stalwarts Alter Ego, who, despite recording since the
early Œ90s, will be making their US debut at The Three Fates. Having
recorded for such labels as Klang and Sven Vath¹s Harthouse and remixed
artists ranging from Primal Scream to Chicks on Speed, Alter Ego hold an
important role in the German movement from hard dancefloor techno to more
experimental realms.

Also on the bill are: Geoff White, a recent signee to Ghostly whose
guitar-based, experimental debut as Aeroc, Viscous Solid, is released in
July; Matthew Dear, performing a full live set of material from his
acclaimed Leave Luck to Heaven and upcoming releases; Midwest Product, who
will take time away from recording their new album for a rare live
appearance this summer; and DJs Osborne, who has spent much of the summer
touring as Soundmurderer as part of the Rephlex Records tour, and Ryan
Elliott, one of Detroit¹s up-and-coming DJs who performing in the festival
this year.

Located within Detroit¹s historic Masonic Temple, the Crystal Ballroom is a
unique and elegant venue built in 1928 with Italian-style décor and two
giant crystal electroliers. The moderate-sized room will help insure that
the Three Fates is one of the more memorable events during Memorial Day
weekend.

The Three Fates takes place on Friday, May 28th, from 10pm-4am, tickets
costing $15. The Crystal Ballroom is located within the Masonic Temple at

one is disco, the last one carl craig, etc.

cool as.

can't see them stopping the burial mix series now, they're just getting

Press Release
May 27, 2004

Movement ‘ 04, Supported by Michigan and the Dutch

Over the past years the Movement Festival has gained worldwide attention and
attracted more than one million people from all over the world each year. The
coming fifth edition of the festival has attracted an unusual sponsor, the
Dutch government, who will be sponsoring one of the four stages. Two major
Dutch funds, the Mondriaan Foundation and the Dutch Pop Institute together with
the city of The Hague, and the Consulate General of the Kingdom of The
Netherlands in Chicago helped to realize this unique international
collaboration. On this, so called, +31/313 Underground Generator stage will
feature both Dutch musicians and visual artists with a huge dedication to
Detroit music.

Several Dutch government officials will be flying into Detroit. The purpose of
their visit is to explore the cultural influence of Detroit music and the
impact an event like the Movement Festival has on a city like Detroit and the
entire state. The officials are investigating the possibility of hosting
another Movement Festival in the Netherlands so that a relationship can be
developed between the two international cities, Detroit and The Hague.

The Movement Festival has also gained the approval from the State of Michigan.
The State is fully aware of the millions of dollars Movement will generate for
the economy but it is also inline with achieving the objectives of the Cool
Cities initiative. This initiative strives to attract and encourage young
people to live, work, and shop in cool cities like Detroit. The globally
recognized Movement Festival serves as a vehicle to help promote the State of
Michigan to festival participants in the United States and the entire world.
