Its djs playing selections that influenced them either on vinyl or cd

(313) records

2004-06-07 Thread David Beattie
Hi people,

someone last week was talking about an Artist called
Bell, just noticed on Piccadilly records web site
there is a new album out called Seven Types of Six on
Soul Jazz records.

Also, over the weekend I heard Danny Webb from
Picadilly up here in Scotland and he dropped this:

Candi Staton - Do your duty / Evidence (Pepe Bradock
mixes) on Honest Jon's

I would recomment checking this out - ive ordered my
copy already ;-)

Cheers

(313) the Narcissist... different pressings?

Hi folks. I was just enjoying my copy of KL's new LP. I checked out discogs
for some info. It appears that there are two extra tracks on the title listed
at.. http://www.discogs.com/release/248624 .

Are there two different pressings of this release? I don't have dementia
or ancient beats on my copy.

cheers,

I just see it as musical masturbation, just like the old free jazz cats - ie
the only people who dig it are the players and the other wannabe players in the

As it's a bit quiet on 313 traffic today :

On the other hand ..

I see it as using the skills you've got to add something different to the
mix, delivering the records in a new way ( in a way that most DJs can't.)

I appreciate the skill involved enjoy the showmanship.

I'm playing a show on Monday night in Chicago at Sonotheque.
Unfortunately, Carlos Souffront will not be able to make it for the
show, but we'll have somebody awesome to replace him. Come check out
the show- Sonotheque is a great spot (with an awesome soundsystem) and
 it's free.

Somebody awesome turns out to be me, incidentally, although I don't
merit the phrase, nor do I feel adequate to fill in for Carlos... :)

Hope to see you there...

Re: (313) INFLUENCE.

2004-06-07 Thread David Powers
Well,
All I can say is that if you don't like that style of mixing, you really don't
enjoy DETROIT STYLE DJ-ing, as that is a style that is very associated with
313. If you listen to the way Detroit ghettotech DJs mix especially (who IMO
represent the authentic street sound of Detroit), it sounds very cut up and
mixed quickly. Certainly The Wizard helped popularize this style but plenty of
others associated with the D do related things (Terrence Parker sometimes, for
instance). Really, it asserts the DJ's power to control the flow of the music
and not be bound by the form of a particular record.

There are times when that isn't an appropriate style, but it is certainly quite
313. And if you want to hear the record on its own you could always go buy it!

Oh hey BTW Robin, I think Tristan introduced us last Monday... Hope you
enjoyed your visit. Assuming you are the same Robin?!

Peace, David

Lots of pure detroit techno chords and vibe atop booty beats. It's really

Exactly, well said. Derrick May is crazy in the mix sometimes too,
moreso when he was doing stuff with reel-to-reel within his radio sets
too, but definitely very physical in a club too, and almost 'pushing'
the sounds the room as he mixes from track to track. When he was on
the radio too, crazy fast, effects and doubles.

Shake has been known to cut it up like this too, drop-ins, phasing,
doubles, rough tumble cut-n-scratch style across different styles
(house, techno, whatever) within the same DJ set, and Claude has
described Shake as his teacher when it came to DJing.Dan Sicko
said it best IMHO: Claude's style is kind of an absorption of ALL the
different detroit styles of DJing. I think those lucky enough to hear
some of this when this style of mixing was heard on detroit radio in
the mid-to-late 80s... perhaps we just got used to it (and took it for
granted?). To me it doesn't sound that weird or showy, honestly, i
think it's just the creation of something new that's greater (and much
funkier) than the sum of it's parts. Claude has an artistic flair in
his mixes that is very much all his own...

I mean all taste is subjective, of course, but the historical
Detroitness of that style I think was well worth noting!
