RE: (313) otto lives!
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] in regard to nights at clubs shutting down - I think it's been caused by people getting nervous about upcoming elections - not wanting to spend too much money and people just not really feeling like going out because of this and other social-political woes. I'd say clubs experiencing decreasing numbers is not strictly a US phenomenon - there was a time here (Dublin) when 4 or 5 techno nights could happen over a weekend and all would do reasonably well. Not so much these day though, a few clubs have a strong following but the rest might be empty if a Mills or Garnier is in town playing one of the bigger venues. I reckon it's got a lot to do with the fact the dance music - or at least the form of it we discuss here - isn't new any more, so there's not such an urgency to see what it's all about for those people only getting to a club going age now. RE: (313) for the Madlib fans
ken, i will stomp a mudhole...!! hehehe no, my opinion is dumb, i don't really go for jazzy hiphop much these days anymore so whatever. i thought it was done to perfection a long time ago i guess, now it all just sounds like more of the same...it would take some really different, out there jazzy stuff to grab me. (like quasimoto did). and mf doom sounds kinda generic mc to me, but ahh whatever...me dumb. i do tend to almost always like acey's stuff tho (when it comes to jazzy things..) I'm probably just wrong about that... Maybe it's that record he had called 'Broken Soul'! : ) Err... I meant to say 'Broken Techno' when referring to the Nu Era album above, but that's probably obvious. Doh. Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: (313) for the Madlib fans
so now i'm listening to the Broken Soul full-length thanks to slsk (but no worries-- I'm buying this one as soon as it hits on vinyl). freakin' awesome beats-- i think a good progression from the Diggin in Brownswood EP. maybe it's just me, but with some bnb stuff, i can't really feel the groove and it feels like jazzy IDM/breakcore, but a lot of these tracks are really pretty housey but without the explicit 4/4 kix, snare, hats (if that makes any sense and doesn't sound totally obvious/stupid). a question: i know a lot of the Madlib stuff is fairly sample-based. How about the DJ Rels Monk Hughes records? I am certainly not intimate with the whole Pharoah Sanders back catalog, but haven't recognized a single sample on either album. Anyone else? --- Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: - Original Message - From: Southern Outpost [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 12:36 AM Subject: Re: (313) for the Madlib fans I can't get past the Monk Hughes release, it's damn hot property IMHO. Madlib can do no wrong at the moment and i'm lookin forward to hearing the full length Disco mix. I'm really feeling all the new Madlib stuff I've heard lately. The DJ Rels kinda reminds me of Nu Era's 'Broken Soul' for some reason, although I can't pinpoint it and it isn't an obvious comparison. I'm probably just wrong about that... The Madlib Remixes Vol. 2 2x 12 is particularly interesting because it's all hip hop acapellas over samples from 1977-1982. There's some nice disco and even vaguely techno bits in there, as well as some properly 80s sounding stuff. I was [this] close to buying the Monk Hughes but ran out of funds. Sounded great from the clips. Did anyone else pick up the Okayplayer 'True Notes Vol. 1' compilation? I've not properly had a chance to ingest it all yet, but the Madlib with Aceyalone track on there is the business, and I believe it's exclusive to that comp. The Madvillain album is probably the best full length so far this year (to continue my trend of lofty, untimely proclomations). ;) MF Doom is a bad-ass MC.
