i was keepin quiet, but this is a f**king travesty.

what has juan done besides make some special records 20 YEARS AGO!!!

derrick and kevin deserve this award, because they've put their time,
energy and $$$ into making the Detroit festival happen. but no matter what
they do, they'll forever be tied to juan- the man who couldn't even make
his DEMF gig (and hundreds of other gigs)

The man who as recently as this summer blew off throwing the opening pitch
at a tigers game and i believe skipped the Metro times Motor City Music
Awards after they flew him to Detroit to recieve a lifetime achievement
award.

Sure, the guy made some influential records. So friggin what. If I were
Derrick or Kevin, i'd be disgusted, that after all their recent efforts,
they still have to share the spotlight with a person who has done nothing
to benifit the city in the past decade.

All because some European idiots with too much time on thier hands and a
collection of ancient texhno wax felt that made them experts on Detroit
civics.

friggin shame

Hi all, a track for free...

http://wildtek.free.fr/DimitriPike-WaitingAMovement.mp3

It's an electro track I ve recorded during Movement weekend 2004. It's a 'Thank
You' track for Scan 7 and Techno Brings People Together.

They have put my name in their thanks/help list and I was proud of that but sad
to can't be in Detroit for Movement and TBPT. I hope next year it will be
possible for me. If not...? I will record a complete album ;-) always free for
your final scratch !!!

All constructive critics/feedbacks are welcome and why not? If you want to remix
it, contact me.

TP is definitely the master of the gospel house jams.

Matt, to answer your question, yes, he's playing some of the
Romanthony stuff. Check his 3 downloadable mix sets page (though it
seems the 3rd mix, which contains a Romanthony track, isnt' available):

My church actually had TP out this summer for one of our worship in
the park events (along with Double Helix - Ypsilanti represent!) and
it was off the hook. The man is really an amazing DJ, and an awesome
Christian out there doing his thing, representing his faith in word

Re: (313) Dullards digital music Q

2004-09-15 Thread jbartuski
that's the standard "CD-quality" sampling rate. I believe you can record at
48khz with Sound Forge -- which is slightly better technially speaking, but
you'd need to convert to 44.1khz to record to CD anyway.

44.1khz should sound fine on a big system, but this is just the inherent
properties of the file - how many times the waveform is being sliced up per
second. If your original material sounds like it was played through an AM
radio that's 20 feet away from the microphone, it will sound like that no
matter what sampling rate you use. Intelligent use of EQ, compression and
effects will make a much more pronounced difference in its sound when played
back at full tilt.

I think I've wrong posted my reply to this post first time I do it again and
all my excuses if it s a double.

In my eyes, the best mixer in the world is done by RODEC

No gadgets, impressive quality and longevity. A sound not comparable with other
mixers due to elements used in conception. And if you really need
efx/options...Why do not add a pioneer EFX 500? The best unit effect actually
available.

All spare elements available ...if a day you need one. It's a long term invest.

I contributed my old half-working Numark to some friends, who have made a
"noise wall" out of old/broken mixers. they basically connect everything
improperly to generate feedback, which can be at least rudimentally controlled
through EQ, fader, external effects etc. the 'crown jewel' is this old Roland
unit with built-in DSP and a three-band EQ isolator. it's a great idea and
endless fun to play with, but it would get me kicked out of my apartment in
seconds. :)

True, true - but if you read everything he wrote, you can see he is
struggling with it all himself - it's clear that he doesn't know what
to do for the best (himself), so he's said he going to take some time
out and have a think after Xmas - even if he only takes a month out and
then comes back - what does it matter? He's been open, honest and
shared something that is troubling him, something that is clearly
hurting like hell.

For that, I will forever have a place in my heart for him, if only
everyone could be as honest...

I'm not knocking you or speaking for Claude - just trying to tell you
how I see it

Lets just show him what I believe he deserves - some respect...

RE: (313) Funk vs. Mathew

2004-09-15 Thread Tristan Watkins
Since my original comments helped spark this discussion, I thought I should
chime in a month or so later. I'm a bit guilty of spouting off prematurely
[quiet in the back]. At the time I claimed it was record of the year I
didn't actually own it (hadn't seen it in any UK stores yet at the time). I
had heard it out a number of times, and I'd heard it live twice. I think the
version on the vinyl needs to be thought of as a DJ tool, because it
certainly doesn't do as much as when it's performed live (he'll be bringing
back bits of other tracks, the next one, tweaking more, etc), and every time
I'd heard it in the mix it wasn't really left to play on its own for a long
time (rightly). I'm of the mind that this is how it is supposed to be, not
that it's some kind of laziness or unimaginativeness on his part (obviously
that's subjective, but whatever).

Since I picked it up I've been mixing it for a few minutes over other
tracks, because I think it can work really well in that way, but I have to
say there's a part of me that's slightly dissapointed that the recording
didn't measure up to the live performance of it, especially since the
recorded version is so long. I very rarely purchase DJ tools these days,
although I have nothing against doing so. I still think it's an excellent
track for what it is, and I think it really needs to be heard in the right
context to be appreciated. But given that it doesn't move quite as much as I
like on the pressing (and I can't just listen to it at home without wanting
more), I'm less enthused about it than I was. I feel similarly about the
Substatic record. Still can't wait to play it on a big system though!

On this note, I've just heard a clip of "911, How Can I Help You?" last
night, and think it's got more variance for those who absolutely require it
in their purchases. Worth a gander. There's also a new one on IIWII, 'Love
Letter to the Enemy', out in the last few days from what I can tell. I have
them both on the way. The former is in stock at Juno and both are in stock
at http://www.covert.uk.com (or were earlier today at any rate).

Hoping I've helped put my hype to rest (or in a clearer context at least).

well, well, well, well..

workin thru the nite, i took off few hours spending time watching the city
waking up and _listening_ to musik instead of letting it play=)

..

i remember some peeps slagging off Soma-rec, well i came round to listen to
Funk D'Void's older "dos" and the new one: "volume freak"
once again and them good songs just broke my heart. so much of soul and so
much of blues! yet i'm for roughly half of each album, not every song works
for me. Funk's musik goes back to detroit roots but it doesnt sound old -
maybe not exactly futuristic but why should it - its musik of today.
although i dont dare to compare these two albums in detail, there is no
major jump from what've Funk been into 2001.

on the other hand i finally got an ear on Mathew. was i disappointed?
almost. following discussion on a list for a while, i expected something
more special - a great production at least, even if i wouldnt like it
personally. and this is where i'm stuck, cause both "decompression" and
"behind the mirror" EPs appear so average to me.
yeah, Mathew got an unique style to a certain extent [i'd say: by combining
known elements] and even own sound to it [although its more like bad
mastering for my liking]. and rite, his tracks are all groovy and well
constructed and they got a soul too. yet somehow they feel too raw.. somehow
tracks are going so straight, so much nowhere, and transitions are mostly
fades. it would explain if these releases are largely recorded live. and if
i'd like harmonies, rhythmics and sound on those EPs, i'd enjoy them still.
unfortunately it doesnt fit my taste and i cant rave about production as
well.

allrite
lets roll on wednesday!

Hi :)

Last few days i found on web few announcment written by claude young, on
which he say that this
is his last active season as dj and producer... can anyone thell me is that
thrue announcemet or somebody joke..

tx

here you have announcement>>>

Well friends, after some very long night's thinking this over I have decided to
take some time out of the music world for a while.
This was not an easy decision and I want to say thanks to all of you for your
support over the past years.
There is a strong possibility 2004 might be my last year involved in electronic
music so if you get the chance to come to any of the shows in the remainder of
2004 please come and enjoy yourselves.
When u dedicate your life to something for over a decade and it goes completely
off the rails you have to make adjustments or go down with the ship.
People have their pre-conceptions and their likes and dislikes, that's fine
with me, we are all meant to be free.
The scene used to be full of vibrant and creative people but now it's just full
of moaners who support artist who don't give a about them. All they are
interested in is boosting their own name and increasing their bank accounts.
Next time u go to a party and the ticket price is amazingly high for you to see
a DJ u cant event speak to before, during or after his set think about what is
important to them.
Call me stupid but i thought it was only human to engage other human
being's was I wrong???
Someone on a post said "if claude young wanted to sell out he could have a long
time ago but he never did".
Before this though another person sent a post to Detroit-Luv saying "well im
sure he'll make a lot of money charging for the farewell tour".
These comments are not the main reason but they are a factor, how much more of
my life am I to give only to have my work constantly thrown back in my face in
favor of other artist who are only concerned with the bank balance of their
account
Next time this guys shells out a wad of cash to see some guy mix 40 records
together that all sound the same he should ask himself what is really important.
I figure my energy is better served helping people.
So im considering being a volunteer in a foreign country. Possibly an aid
worker or something similar. Anything to help make other peoples lives a little
better.
Every man has his breaking point and I have been on the road since i left
Detroit over 11 years ago, every week. So im taking some time out for once and
if i decide to come back it will be under different circumstances.
I've had bad management coupled with other setbacks as well so if i do come
back ill be handling everything independently with a small group of friends in
Glasgow.

hope this answers all your questions

Re[2]: (313) DJ MIXER: what would be your choice?

2004-09-15 Thread Derek Plaslaiko.

another one to look into, though i dont think they make it anymore, is the
vestax pmc-50. (not the 55. the 55 has different eq's on it)

this always has and probably always will be my fave mixer. its got plenty
of inputs and the eq's they used on it are exactly what i like. they dont
bend when it gets down to it. theres nothing more i hate than when eq's
drop DRASTICALLY when you pull them back around the 8:30 mark on the
dials. not to mention, theres no kind of enhancements going on with the
sound. i really like this about it. when you run music thru a rane, or
even an allen & heath and ESPECIALLY pioneers, you can usually tell which
mixer is being used (aside from them using the gadgets built in, of
course... that would be TOO MUCH of a dead give away), because they all
seem to give things a particular "sound". with the pmc-50, the music comes
out dry. and since theres a ton of ins and outs to it, you can add
whatever type of fx units or anything else you want to use to make it
sound how you want it to.

the mixer is also incredibly easy to get fixed or replace the faders on
it.

they used to run about $1300 USD, but you can find them for around $500 or
$600 on ebay and other outlets.

worth every penny, in my opinion.

if you dont take my advice on it, thats cool at least look into the
allen & heaths x:one series. those would be my second reccomendation, but
i dont like them first and foremost because of the way you have to push
them to sound how i like mixers to sound. ie: the mixer is made to be
redlined... im not into that aspect of it but other then that, they are
great mixers.

good luck,

derek.

PRESS RELEASE

the PHONIQ collective brings you the third in our ongoing series of live
electronic music events. each of these events are designed to act as an
exploration into the different intersections between technology and
music/art making. this time around phoniq will feature an assembly of
artists all working to create an immersive deep listening experience. the
evening will feature: the first ever appearance of toronto's very own
AKUMU, whose recently released 'fluxes' cd on the akumu imprint spider
records, shows us a deeper, lush, dark ambient side to this artist as
opposed to his self titled debut from 2000, which exhibited his more dub
ambient side. for this montreal performance akumu will play a cross
section of his slow-beat dub found on his earlier release and the pure
deep ambience of his most recent 'fluxes' release.
akumu's performance will also feature some of the artists own video work
projected during his performance.

rounding out this evening of deep listening will be phoniq co-founder and
noise factory recording artist NAW, who will be presenting a very rare
live presentation of his microsound/idm experimental musings. panospria
label head and phoniq collective members SCANT INTONE and VARIOUS will be
performing a tag team live pa of glitchy/experimental shapeshifting music.
opening and closing the evenings activities will be modular systems host
and phoniq co-founder CYAN djing the less dance floor oriented
idm/quirky electro and other found rareties that find their way into
her vast music collection.

BIOS/INFO

PHONIQ
www.phoniq.net
phoniq is a collective of individuals dedicated to promoting bleeding edge
electronic music/art in interesting variable environments, with an
emphasis on exposing aural and visual talent that has not yet been exposed
to the electronic arts communities of montreal and canada. we aim to
showcase upstart music producers, djs, and emerging visual artists all
working in electronic realms. our foremost goal is to showcase off the
wall and raw genres of music and visual electronic arts- not just those
that are currently "en vogue" or will be shortly.

the concept for phoniq came together through the chance meeting of 2
active members of the montreal/canadian electronic music and digital arts
community: ckut-fm dj/host cyan and dub glitch techno producer naw. phoniq
has grown out of the combined histories of these 2 individuals. naw brings
the clonk legacy that he created 6 years ago in toronto, which hosted such
artists as: monolake, kit clayton and sutekh. cyan brings her ongoing
involvement in community radio, event coordinating and
dj talents.

since then the collective has grown to include 5 core members
responsible for keeping things running. after a short 6 months phoniq has
grown from an idea of "how can we create a viable promotional vehicle for
canadian electronic artists", into a music series, an active community mailing
list/community forum, and in the coming months phoniq will relaunch its site
designed to act as a portal resource for the canadian electronic music
community which will include a net-label.

AKUMU
www.spiderrecords.com
somewhere between the spacey soundscapes of dark ambient lounge
music and the scratchy breakbeats of downtempo drum n' bass lies the
wonderful world of akumu. the brainchild of deane hughes, founder of the
independent spider records label, who has previously recorded under the
names thrive and alchemy, akumu ranges from languid liquid synths that
feel like a drowsy summer afternoon, to hypnotic ringing and cascading
full-speed-ahead bass-plus-beats, to spooky synths and muffled electronic
planet-blips. "akumu" means "bad dream" in Japanese, and a lot of his
music has a dreamlike quality to it.

dark ambiences, shadowy beats, haunting microscapes, from electronic
artist and film composer deane hughes, akumu is an exploration of
atmospheres, moods and rhythms. deane is celebrating the release of his
latest akumu cd, entitled fluxes. this minimalist cd was written and
created in guatemala, honduras & mexico over a 6-month time span using
binaural field recordings to construct drone-based and loop-based
instruments. deane will be performing and improvising on material from
fluxes and other material with visuals projected from some of his abstract
video-work at this first ever montreal performance for this artist.

(313) Deep Space Radio Memories

2004-09-15 Thread Ian Malbon

My thanks again to Robin for the space to share.

Happy 10 years, 313 and Deep Space!

Back in the day, Linda and I would hit the parties Saturday night, and
Deep Space was sometimes the soundtrack while driving around Detroit.
I got tired of missing parts of the show, so i rigged the VCR to start
at midnight and grab 4 hours. These are the only two shows I managed
to retain (8 hours total), but they are corkers. Juan's influence in
particular is evident in the July show (Minx hosting).

I hope you all enjoy them as much as I have. Good luck with the
tracklisting, too. This should be fun.

Well friends, after some very long night's thinking this over I have decided to
take some time out of the music world for a while. This was not an easy
decision and I want to say thanks to all of you for your support over the past
years. There is a strong possibility 2004 might be my last year involved in
electronic music so if you get the chance to come to any of the shows in the
remainder of 2004 please come and enjoy yourselves. When u dedicate your life
to something for over a decade and it goes completely off the rails you have to
make adjustments or go down with the ship. People have their pre-conceptions
and their likes and dislikes, that's fine with me, we are all meant to be free.
Call me stupid but i thought it was only human to engage
other human being's was I wrong??? Someone on a post said "if claude young
wanted to sell out he could have a long time ago but he never did". Before this
though another person sent a post to Detroit-Luv saying "well im sure he'll
make a lot of money charging for the farewell tour". These comments are not the
main reason but they are a factor, how much more of my life am I to give only
to have my work constantly thrown back in my face in favor of other artist who
are only concerned with the bank balance of their account Next time this
guys shells out a wad of cash to see some guy mix 40 records together that all
sound the same he should ask himself what is really important. I figure my
energy is better served helping people. So im considering being a volunteer in
a foreign country. Possibly an aid worker or something similar. Anything to
help make other peoples lives a little better. Every man has his breaking point
and I have been on the road since i left Detroit over 11 years ago, every week.
So im taking some time out for once and if i decide to come back it will be
under different circumstances. I've had bad management coupled with other
setbacks as well so if i do come back ill be handling everything independently
with a small group of friends in Glasgow.

hope this answers all your questions

(313) Mathew Jonson remixes Nelly Furtado?

2004-09-15 Thread Antonio Alves

Apologies if this has been discussed before.

While wondering in the Mutek site I found this:

"... Mathew Jonson, known for his minimal house compositions on the
Itiswhatitis label, has worked with artists like Luciano (‘Alpine
Rocket’ on Perlon) and remixed the likes of Nelly Furtado..."

and then further investigation led me to this:

http://www.kbig104.com/iplaylist/album/574127/

Check the credits. Has anyone heard this? I tried to check Discogs but
I've been getting errors when loading individual releases pages.

Whoever said this, I have to agree 98%.

I picked-up "Decompression" and "Behind The Mirror" and I have given them
both as fair and open-minded and thorough a listen as I could muster. I've
had both for about a month and I've listened to them at least 2 times a week
during that time. The reason being that there has been such a kerfuffle
about Mr Jonson on here recently surrounding his merits vs other people's
opinions that these had been overstated. But above that, I remember people
have been singing his praises forcefully (for his productions) for over a
year. All I can comment on is these two records though, as I'm not sure if
I've heard anything else by him. To me they are not poor, not bad, but there
seems to be a mismatch between them the hype (in some quarters) which have
preceded them, and the records themselves (to my mind). I like both tracks
on the "Behind The Mirror" release more than the "Decompression" ones
although having said that, I like "Ultraviolet" (side b of "Decompression)
more than the actual main track.

Like the person I quote (sorry, didn't see your name) I expected something
much more special, production wise, style wise; something new, adventurous,
something outstanding maybe. But these tracks are not that. (imo).

What this says to me though is not that people are wrong to expect so much,
but that I need to check out those earlier releases! Also, it seems people
*want* to like the guy and his productions an awful lot. I can see the
reasons for that: he's young, 'new', seems to be promising (his dad was a
musician) and from what I hear, he seems an ok guy. Mostly though, what this
situation seems to underline to me is a big need for new blood in this
favourite music of ours, to take things to the next level or simply to pick
up the torch of those who perhaps might need to consider handing it over.
Wether MJ is going to prove one of the more notable examples of new blood in
years to come, is still open to question, of course. I don't see any reason
why he he oughtn't to be! But I don't think if he is notable in coming
years, it will be for these two releases.

To me they are not poor, not bad, but there
seems to be a mismatch between them the hype (in some quarters) which have

on the "Behind The Mirror" release more than the "Decompression" ones
although having said that, I like "Ultraviolet" (side b of "Decompression)
more than the actual main track.

I can see the
reasons for that: he's young, 'new', seems to be promising (his dad was a

situation seems to underline to me is a big need for new blood in this
favourite music of ours, to take things to the next level or simply to pick
up the torch of those who perhaps might need to consider handing it over.
Wether MJ is going to prove one of the more notable examples of new blood in

why he he oughtn't to be! But I don't think if he is notable in coming

Right. I get the feeling some people thought I was taking the p**s.
Yeah, I was taking the p*ss, but not out of the indviduals concerned, out
of the fact that some joker made up yet another genre.

"Inspirational House"?

Do me a favour. It's flipping house music.

we've previously been using xone:32 yet as strange as it is, a lot of
DJs complained on "strange controls". gotta check out the

2004-09-15 Thread alan.heneghan
The Pioneer is a good mixer, but clips too easily when pushed into the red, and
the x-fader isnt as good as the P&G, (not saying any of you guys throttle the
hell out of a system, but I've seen it many a time) and as the original post
was what was best a for a club system, sound quality must be a priority, so it
has to be the Allen and Heath 62/92.
Friends of mine who run free party sound sytems have all now has replaced the
Pioneers with A&H.

Y'all can say what you want, but I still swear by my Gemini 626MKII. In the
5 years that I've owned it, I haven't had a single issue with it. No fader
crackle, no channels going in and out, no cold solder joints to fix on the
i/o RCA's, no nothing. I use my decks and a laptop on it's 3 channels, but
may switch to a cd/turntable config at some point. Works great, dirt cheap,
what more can you ask for?

his best stuff so far is typerope and the b side of she is he.
he'll never have anything even close to his collaboration on
Cobblestone Jazz's "5th Element", that track is absolutely
classic. his other joints are very hit or miss, especially the
minus record, which is all miss, and the a side of the sub static
record. the guy makes minimal melodic techno, its nothing new or
groundbreaking. when he does it well it sounds really good.

(313) Funk vs. Mathew

2004-09-15 Thread z99

well, well, well, well..

workin thru the nite, i took off few hours spending time watching the
city waking up and _listening_ to musik instead of letting it play=)

..

i remember some peeps slagging off Soma-rec, well i came round to
listen to Funk D'Void's older "dos" and the new one: "volume freak"
once again and them good songs just broke my heart. so much of soul
and so much of blues! yet i'm for roughly half of each album, not
every song works for me. Funk's musik goes back to detroit roots but
it doesnt sound old - maybe not exactly futuristic but why should it -
its musik of today. although i dont dare to compare these two
albums in detail, there is no major jump from what've Funk been into
2001.

on the other hand i finally got an ear on Mathew. was i disappointed?
almost. following discussion on a list for a while, i expected
something more special - a great production at least, even if i
wouldnt like it personally. and this is where i'm stuck, cause both
"decompression" and "behind the mirror" EPs appear so average to me.
yeah, Mathew got an unique style to a certain extent [i'd say: by
combining known elements] and even own sound to it [although
its more like bad mastering for my liking]. and rite, his tracks are
all groovy and well constructed and they got a soul too. yet somehow
they feel too raw.. somehow tracks are going so straight, so much
nowhere, and transitions are mostly fades. it would explain if these
releases are largely recorded live. and if i'd like harmonies,
rhythmics and sound on those EPs, i'd enjoy them still. unfortunately
it doesnt fit my taste and i cant rave about production as well.

allrite
lets roll on wednesday!

Re: (313) DJ MIXER: what would be your choice?

2004-09-15 Thread turnstyle

I use a Red Sound Infader.

I will admit the mixer has latent noise issues .. and can actually crash
on you now and again . as it was one of the first mixer to use a digital
cross fader section.

It has three faders . one for the bass, one for mids, on for high's

I love the concept, so found a second hand one. Its great to tweak on
at home, and kick at house parties, but never rely on one at a gig.

I think the digital part of the mixer is very voltage sensitive, so if you
spike the sound or get a power flux . it dies . and need to on/off again

// otherwise for drinking and mixing and staying alive, Pioneer :: their
mixers sound like tinfoil but boy to they survive club life.

Best Dj Mixers for range and quality .. would be Rane. Find one that
suits your style . and expect to enjoy that mixer for a long time.

i've had rather good luck with my ttx tables, but my numark mixer is
terrible, and for all the crap i hear about numark layiing off

teehee - free n' workin' - love it! :)

when I picked up one years back it was a 4 channel Numark, 'cos that's
what I was used to. I still have it, and it does a decent job. my only
complaint is that there is slight bleed in two of the line channels,
which I've been too proccupied to do anything about ...

I guess if I had some money to spend I'd get a decent Pioneer - those
look pretty wicked. tho' I do prefer models that are more simplistic,
less to worry about, etc.

If anyone has an old mixer that still works, but don't

to pay something mighty cheap for it.

Perhaps the 92 has got these issues ironed out - it
certainly looks
more rugged, and finally combines features from all
the previous models
into one unit, as well as having 'DJ-style' fader

'engineer-style' fader knobs...

If you can manage without linear faders, the Rane
2016 is super hot.

I do like vestax mixers as well (I REALLY like the
PMC-250 with those
dual EQ's), but don't know how they hold up in terms
of durability. That
new PMC-CX looks pretty nifty; the master isolator

interesting, though I don't quite understand what
it's all about.

Get an A&H 92 though. And let us all come over and
