My high school used to offer classes in electronic music. This was back in.oh, 1986. We used Sequential Circuit Pro One synths and recorded to 4 track reel-to-reel. Learned all about FM synthesis. Best class in high school ever. I doubt they still offer it. There's a couple of clubs in Cardiff (Holodeck) and a good free party scene... Yes, was just about to say. Cyclone, Wales doesn't really have any big cities (1 only?), so while I don't really know, I wouldn't imagine there's a big club thing going on. But, as Martin rightly mentions, there seems to be a free party every weekend in North Wales. Very healthy 'scene' by the sounds of it, although I've never been to one. Wales is a pretty beautiful country, stunning coastline, mountains the lot. Kind of go there to escape normally, as opposed to party... Tell you what, there's some strange ol' people living in them there hills tho. ; ) Alex _ - End of message text Is your business ready for the new era of accounting? http://www.ifrs.co.uk This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. The redesign is mostly finished and I've restored a decent chunk of the mix archives. Many of the older mixes are in 128kbps mp3 for the first time (previously only in low quality Real Audio). This covers most of my mixes since 2000. I've also added the beginnings of a pics section and archived charts. I used to have about 50 of my songs up at mp313.com until we let that die a year or so ago, at least half of which are up again. I'll be uploading the CD mix I did for mp313 that featured nothing but mp313 artists when I find some time to re-design the page. After all that I'll continue to upload mix archives, and let you know about it here. Eventually I'll get around to archiving some of my radio shows from '92-'97, which should be a fairly interesting time capsule. You'll get to hear me totally geek out on the air and read Iowa weather forecasts/Public Service Announcements. JaMaul said... If you wanted to reach a younger, less-educated crowd with the intention of giving them some insight in the history of the music, how would you go about? My Tuppence I don't think you can say hey kids this is the music listened to back in the day. You end up sounding like 'The Dad'. We have to reinvent this music, forget about labelling it, make it exciting and accessible without selling out. Then maybe people will want to get into the music that influenced our exciting new music. Then we say the music from back in the day was techno, what were doing now is techno too. I'm not too good with words but me quote you these ... I've found you've got to look back at the old things and see them in a new light. - John Coltrane, 1960, Down Beat magazine or I'll play it first and tell you what it is later. Miles Davis - But when all the youth are into hip-hop/indie/rock how can you turn them onto House/Techno ??? Rav. (((Submerge))) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 10:12 AM To: Redmond, Ja'Maul; robin; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Market elec music vs educate (Was: Electronic music culture in America) I also believe the 'age question' and the marketing of electronic music is an important factor in the success and distribution of the music. I also get the feeling most events/clubs/artists/hypes are marketed towards an audience that is generally a lot younger than most people on the list/most people who have been into techno since the beginning. Ask the average sixteen-year old visitor of a big techno event who invented techno and I wouldn't be surprised if some say Adam Beyer or Sven Väth. I've been thinking a lot about the question whether it's worth the trouble of trying to (re)educate them kids, but I'm afraid it's a collossal task that's not realistic. So let me throw this question into the group then: If you wanted to reach a younger, less-educated crowd with the intention of giving them some insight in the history of the music, how would you go about? John I believe the age thing is a big factor. Which is why I was so focused on the misguided marketing or promoting of techno. I think I would be safe to say that most electronic music is marketed towards a 25 and under crowdi.e. dance night clubs, raves, bars, small records stores, cliché' magazines,,etc. But for most larger cities and small cities the 25 to 40 crowd is the largest in population demographic. Come on we have to be honest, once we hit 30 it's hard to make it to these late night events with all of our other responsibilites. I'm starting to promote my live P.a.'s to Daytime, weekend festivals, Gallery Crawls,Park festivals, Car shows, Electronics or computer events, etc. and I'm getting way better response not to mention better pay. WAY more people actually buy c.d's and ask for contact information. The music at these events are usually reserved for Rock/top 40 or even some hip-hop. After getting booked I asked why aren't more electronic music being showcased and the event coordinator would state simply,,, No one from that music approaches me. For 25 years techno in america has been marketed to a demographic that's getting smaller and smaller and more divided. Of the number of 25 and under group, most are into hip-hop and top 40 and the rest are even more divided now days between the plethora of sub-genres within electronic music. Our techno shows very rarely pull progressive house heads or d-n-b crowds and vice-versa. An come to think of it, Even within 25 and under crowds we're poorly marketed. How many 18 year old non d.j.'s actually buy vinyl? Why is it that in almost every University sponsered event electronic music is missing in action with the exception of the occasional big name trance d.j. hear and there.? How do we expect for american, electronic music culture to grow, when our music is only expose to such a small portion of the population. I guess I'm ranting now, but a bunch of us down here in the south have been discussing this very thing. -Original Message- From: robin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 07, 2004 4:54 AM To: 313 Org Subject: Re: (313) Electronic music culture in America when i first got on this list i was in my mid twenties with the world in front of me. now i'm in my mid thirties with a growing family that keeps on growing. much harder to go clubbing. Even if they dont have the songs available at the moment surely if they have a database of wants lists from people there is an opportunity to put a certain track/artist/label online for a short period and notify those who are waiting for it. Yes indeed. Plenty going on, mainly in the cities. Here in Cardiff, the capital, we have a few techno nights with some good resident DJs. DJ Rolando is playing next week at a new night, Funktuate. Martin mentioned Holodeck, a very popular night which is rather more banging (acid techno and so on). They've got Mark Broom/Rue East next. I promote a monthly night, Machine Meadow, now one year old where we play electro and 313 stuff. Recent guests have included Tom Churchill, a former Cardiff boy and Acid Casuals, who had a 12 on Novamute. Other than techno, there's tonnes of quality nights doing hip-hop, house, drumbass and reggae. Out in the valleys they have lots of working men's clubs, if you can imagine a Welsh version of that scene in The Blues Brothers. Drop me a mail if you're ever coming down. It wouldn't surprise me if there's no music actually sitting on their computers at all - they may well have just populated their database directly from Discogs. The whole enterprise looks highly dodgy to me. I hope it doesn't indicate that sharky mp3 net entrepeneur types, scared off by the powerful and litigous RIAA and BPI, have decided to focus their attention on us poor and lawyer-less types in the underground/non-commercial world. In many ways the underground must look like easy meat compared to major label artists. It wouldn't surprise me if there's no music actually sitting on their computers at all - they may well have just populated their database directly from Discogs. nah, that might hold true except for the fact that they have more than a few tracks from artists that have never been released as well as a number of trax already released from netlabels (which are always free). smells like some snakes in the grass. sorry to intrude with this but I thought some people might be able to help I got this from a reggae dub mailing I'm on (I'm looking for some place in the US to donate to but this might help the UK peeps) __ THIS LETTER IS SUPPORTED BY CULTURE PROMOTIONS AND WE PASS IT ON TO OUR ENTIRE WORLDWIDE DATABASE EVEN ALTHOUGH THE CONTACT ADDRESSES LISTED BELOW ARE PURELY FOR THE UK - WE ARE SURE YOU WILL FIND A WAY TO HELP IN WHICHEVER COUNTRY YOU LIVE IN. SIMILIAR SENTIMENT ALSO GOES OUT TO JAMAICA AND OTHER PARTS OF THE CARIBBEAN IN DISTRESS TOO - WHERE WE CAN OFFER SUPPORT WE MUST. ONE LOVE, NICKY, CULTURE PROMOTIONS Dear friends, You will all be aware of the devastation wrecked upon certain parts of the Caribbean recently, in particular the tiny island of Grenada. Of the 100,000 inhabitants, almost ALL, some 80-90,000 people are either homeless or at the very least roofless!! The island has been laterally wiped out by hurricane Ivan. The only thing left standing are the people! our Mothers , Fathers, Brothers and Sisters. It has been estimated that some US$ 1000,000,000 will be required to rebuild Grenada!! Where will this money come from? United States ? Germany? United Kingdom? I don't know. What I do know is that right now, this very moment, the people of Grenada are struggling to survive with little water, NO food, NO electricity, Major flooding and Mass homelessness!! Any of you who have been keeping up with the news will know that this is NO exaggeration. YOU I can do our little bit to help! I am asking that we visit our cupboards for tinned and dry foods, those able to afford a little bit more, purchase a few extra items at the supermarket this weekend or visit the Cash Carry / Wholesalers. Brendanhave decided to focus their attention on us poor and lawyer-less types in the underground/non-commercial world. In many ways the underground must look like easy meat compared to major label artists. Must say, it really does look like that might be the case. It's a shame, because the idea would be a honorable one in principle. I remember we had a conversation about this a while back, and the more knowledgable people on the list told me that this sort of thing was quite costly and difficult to do _ - End of message text Is your business ready for the new era of accounting? http://www.ifrs.co.uk This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. Everyone's on there - Ghostly, M_nus, Plus 8even R.E.M. and R. Kelly (and since when are they underground artists?). One thing that's strange, none of the labels are actually listed, only listed as N/A. I posted this comment on detroitluv.com as well: It seems like they aren't actually selling anything right now, just gathering want lists? You'd think they would get permission before putting tracks up, unless their angle might be to use these want lists to show artists that it's worthwhile to make a deal with them. If that's the case, it's still shady, but I'm wondering if it will be harder to get them to stop if they haven't actually sold anything Also, considering it's a Russian outfit, would artists wanting them to stop have to go through the Russian legal system, or that of their home country? Re: (313) [Fwd: [Techhouse] Jetgroove Attorney Responds]
hmmm, just thought i'd add my two cents. the practice of this jetgroove website is highly questionable imho. i'd probably advice any labelowner to summon jetgroove to take all references to his/her label's releases off the website. basically jetgroove is trying to cash in on the fact that artists and labelowners have spend time, effort and money in getting their music out, and get noticed by the public. now jetgroove tries to generate attention to their PAID service making use of the hard work by other, whom have not given their prior permission. the fact that they place the names of artists and labels on their website, as if these artists and labels have granted permission, could possible even damage the good name and image of these artists/labels, should the practice of jetgroove turn out to be fraudulent or otherwise illegal. jurren _ MSN Search, for accurate results! http://search.msn.nl

hhrm... I don't think I know Jason. Should mention Craig Gonzales. And Mike Servito and on the slightly younger tip- the paxahau djs, drew maddox and chuck flask, are really taking the helm for detroit locals (although i;d say their collection certainly doesn't go as deep as patrick's or carlos') at this point i'm just listing my friends- but i really truly would rather here them play than 99% of the DJs out there- including the good ones. maybe it's just because we all came up in the same scene so our taste are similarly if not exactly formed. Yeah, we had Patrick twice at our parties and he totally killed it both times. Very underrated DJ in my opinion. I tried to have Carlos down in June but he had to cancel due to a sheduling conflict and unfortunately we were doing a party when he played here a few weeks ago at Sonotheque, so I couldn't catch that set either-- he's been amazing every time I've ever seen him too, though. I'm excited to see Plaslaiko and Servito in NYC in November-- that should be awesome, as should the whole party. -- :: atomly :: [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] : www.atomly.com ...
