Re: (313) Re: Pheerce citi #4
I picked up the Intergalactic Beats thing from them - its a 2 x 12 but one of the records is completely unplayable. The other one is fine and has the 2 Shop tracks and Bug in the Bassbin so unless you want to pay the full price for those 3 tracks dont pick it up. I have heard from at least one other person on LD who picked it up and his was exactly the same Cheers BT They are also listing Open House: Aquatic on Buzz and Intergalatic Beats 3xLP (in blue vinyl)... So, is HTFR behind the recent Buzz represses/bootlegs? Didn't some of them come from USA? Maybe another Bells of NY type of scam? Greetings, Guilherme

Glad someone else likes sit! I got the distinct impression when it came out a couple of years ago, that people who were discovering the more melodic 'Who Taught You Math,' 'Point Blank' and 'Wire To Wire' Hood, would rather ignore this harder, darker, more archetypally-minimal incarnation. The LP has actually grown on me. After about two years of listening to it on and off, I'm noticing all sorts of themes in there which I hadn't before. For instance, I think there is a very subtly-used, Philip Glass sample on one of the tracks! (I could be tripping but I don't think so.) I find the Logistic Remix project a little puzzling. I mean, the tracks no longer sound anything like the original. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing: there have been some very nice results imo, but it just seems to portray unwittingly that the general atmosphere and tone of the originals (which the remixes are totally bereft of) was in some way defective. Having said all that, the Substance rework is Peter Kuschnereit at his best (even if he might as well just have handed in a brand new track!) k -Original Message- From: darnistle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 27 March 2005 03:45 To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Monobox OOO, THIS IS GOOODDD Just picked up Molecule today and I am tres pleased! (313) Pheerce Citi 04 - The Investigation
Hi there, Being stuck in Coventry for this holiday, I decided to visit the Hard to Find shop in B'ham to investigate this ``rediscovered'' Pheerce City 04. Funny this shop claims themselves as ``probably the best shop in the world specialised in deleted and current dance music''. I couldn't agree more if you exchange ``deleted and current'' for ``bootlegged and ripped off''... Let's go to the records. Pheerce Citi 01 (red label): A1 Sinister [1st Mix] A2 Wiggin [Original] B1 Wiggin [Reese Mix] B2 Freestyle [Bongo Mix] Pheerce Citi 04 (purple label): A1 Sinister [Mellow Mix] A2 Wiggin [Re-mix] B1 Wiggin [Juan Atkins Mix] B2 Freestyle [Mayday Mix] Both are cheap and very low quality bootlegs. You could tell by just looking at the vinyl cut in the edge and internal hole, misplaced labels, with scanned/photocopied fonts... The sound is awful: Compressed with very poor dynamics, quite blurred and dull. Bass is very boomy, medium is nasal/congested and there is no high end... This is for all tracks in both records, but A1 in PC04 (Sinister [Mellow Mix]), which is considerably better (probably mastered from a different source) with better dynamics and decent tonal balance. But the treble is still brittle and grainy. The Sinister 1st Mix is the same available in the Nude Photo 88 (on Kool Kat) and quite similar to the usual version (available in the Innovator EP on Network, etc...) The Freestyle versions are almost exactally the same. One (maybe the Mayday Mix, I'm a bit confused now) is easy to find elsewhere (Innovator 5xLP). The same goes for the Wiggin versions (but the Reese Mix). The Wiggin Re-Mix is the one available in the Buzz Relics 12/Mixes (BZZXL 106060). AFAIK, the two PC 01 original pressings were 1) double A-sided with Wiggin [Reese Mix] and Freestyle [Bongo Mix] and 2) A- with Wiggin [Original], Sinister [Mellow Mix] and B- with Wiggin [Reese Mix], Freestyle [Bongo Mix]. In conclusion, I would forget about this PC 01 bootleg. The low quality is not worth a penny. So the only source of the Wiggin [Reese Mix] is still the originals PC 01 (Am I correct on this?). The PC 04 bootleg can be useful if you want this Sinister [Mellow Mix]. They also have: - Intergalactic Beats 2xLP (blue vinyl). I agree with David Beattie that one of the records is crap and unplayable (the compilation one) but the other (with the two Shop tracks) has almost decent quality. Still a bit grainy and brittle in the treble... - Open House - Aquatic Buzz repress. In the usual Buzz repress quality (quite superior than the PC). - A couple of Blake Baxter bootlegs (Red Zone, Incognito) in very low quality, too. - All those bootleg compilations/best of: Carl Craig Remixes Vol.2 (catalog CCR02), Best of Mr. Fingers (BMR01), Grace Jones Mixes (GJR01)... - The other Buzz ``represses'' were all there in large quantities: Panic In Detroit, Relics Comp. 12s, Equinox Comp. As well as DFC Relics, and Wild Times (Mayday Mix)... I should stop now. It was quite funny, though. You know, I had the impression that everything in that shop was fake and got quite concerned about buying any record (specially because they do not price tag any!)... Hope this shine some light about these PC bootlegs. Take care, Guilherme

Hadn't seen him since SXSW in '01 and was pretty excited for it. There's something thrilling in an uber-record-geek way about a DJ who removes the platter and cranks the decks up to +/-16 as soon as he gets behind the booth. He put on quite a show before spinning as well, but I won't bother with those details other than to say it seemed like an eternity from when he appeared behind the booth initially until he returned from his disappearance. Seemed like he was really taking the piss then out of nowhere he started and I realised it was midnight on the dot. Weird... Anyway, he turned out a pretty good show, although the energy wasn't as sustained as I remember it being. I might be getting spoiled by having Brendan and Guy in such close proximity. (313) Carl Craig in Sydney?
He was great in Melb at Honkytonks. He DJed with a computer set-up - Stanton Tracktor thing. (I don't know much on this stuff but I observed as much). Started with a 'sample' from Apocalypse Now - a part with the whirling helicopters and dialogue - and played v minimal techno (as in the newer German micro style Hawtin favours too) and gradually built up to Detroit style with a few faves like Strings Of Life - and then finished the arc with jazzy vibes. His last track was one by Detroit Experiment, from memory. I think Carl DJs as a programmer and the new technologies have helped him come into his own as a DJ. Really superb. Most proclaimed it to be one of the best gigs we've experienced in some time. Fabulous, responsive crowd. Christian Vance played live as Phunk De Sonique - layered lush sounds. One of the most talented techno/house producers in Melb. -- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Carl Craig in Sydney? Sorry, that's what all the glitch and chin kids call them up here ;) glitch and chin? LOL! Is that sorta like nipples and bass? ;) The gigs are kinda odd, the chatter is louder than the tunes and no-one dances, kinda goes crash_bang_stroke_stroke__twock. Glad they are doing it mind. Glitch and Chin, it's where it's at. Martin

The middle section of this mix is well deep, love it and the Coil re-edit is fantastically fun... - Original Message - From: the deliverator [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 11:44 PM Subject: (313) FW: [coil] Surgeon @ Breezeblock Here's the download! -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Maarten Schermer Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 3:34 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [coil] Surgeon @ Breezeblock damn bbc streams won't rip! anyway, the same set is available at http://www.dj-surgeon.com/audio.html for download. probably better quality than the bbc stream, but the download hasn't finished yest, so i'm not sure. maarten ___ Coil mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.hollyfeld.org/mailman/listinfo/coil
Re: (313) Carl Craig in Sydney?
Looks like Melbourne definitely got the better end of the deal! It was good to see him in Sydney - the first time I've ever seen him in any incarnation, but the gig itself wasn't really put together with much love; it seemed to be an out-and-out exercise in making money rather than a party put on by passionate folk. Carl played fantastic music throughout - starting off all minimal with some Rhythm and Sound and the new Luciano on cadenza, moving through nice dubby house a la KDJ, into some nice tech and he generally stayed in that tech area for most of the night, colouring it with latin/african rhythms. He played lots of his own stuff (it was great to finally hear his remix of Beanfield on a big system, though I'm a little disappointed he didn't give Angola a whirl) and finished up with some really emotive strings-based tech. When he dropped the seemingly obligatory tracks he did it with panache. Jaguar coming in over Good Girls was a particular highlight. And then the next support came on and played nosebleed techno. And most people went home. Carl seemed to be enjoying himself at times, and there were moments of brilliance, but in all I didn't really feel that he was at any time running on full steam. I think he had a very very tough crowd to please and so couldn't take the kind of risks I was hoping he would, track selection-wise, without alienating a lot of people. Sounds like the Honkytonks crowd were more open-minded on the whole. I'm not really complaining though - as said, it was good to hear some fantastic music on such a great system - and to see so many people enjoying it; a real rareity for Sydney. And from a fanboy perspective it was just super cool to be in the same space as one of my heroes! Just to elaborate on Cyclone's description of his setup - he was using the latest version of Final Scratch with the new firewire scratch amp and full-blown Traktor interface, a DJM600 whose effects he was working from time to time (only delays and echos - no flangetastic nonsense from CC!), and he also had a 16-pad midi controller that he was using to trigger various sounds (and maybe loops and tracks as well). Cyclone Wehner [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/30/05 5:41 am He was great in Melb at Honkytonks. I should also add that the following night (Easter Sunday) I went to see one of the heads of Perlon records, Zip/Dimbiman, play at a small party in the city and he was bloody brilliant. If you guys ever get an opportunity to check him out, I urge you to do so. A fabulous record collection - I've calculated that the night is probably going to cost me a couple of hundred bucks in new purchases... if I can track any of this stuff down, that is...
