(313) other lists

2005-07-19 Thread Guilherme Menegon Arantes

Hi nice people,

Can you recommend other forums or email lists with nice people to answer
some of my many questions on funk and jazz?? What about another list for
rock/punk/funk/dub/wave early 80's crossover?? Maybe one for disco, both
funk and space variations, with some italo heads is also available??

Any pointers to forums about these or anything in between will be really
appreciated. This way I would not bother you with OT questions.

Many thanks,

Gui

I hear the same stuff about record sales, that old fashionned music
sells less because its been the same for too long, and that young people
prefer to buy stuff fitting more to their tastes (lets say some regular
hard pounding techno).

For the last years ive heard the 25,30 and over people saying it used
to be better, young do not appreciate the good things... Err sounds
like my parents.

I think such parties (ive never been to Lost, but i guess what u mean)
should probably try to get some smaller venues to stay successful in
terms of crowd, atmosphere and music, rather than changing their musical
style which obviously does not fit with anybody (promoters , attenders)
linked to this event.

Dont misundertand me, i like it old school. I just prefer it succesful
in a small club (like that one at Moog with Jeff Mills at Sonar) rather
than big and boring (example that story saying Richie Hawtin was so
boring in 5000 people arena full of people expecting DJs like Adam Beyer).

Well, it must have something to do with his long-lasting relationship
with Lost. I mean he's been playing there for over a decade, and even did
things like that first Space Bass @ Bridge Tunnel for £5 entry, so it must
(at least partially) be due to the strength of the relationship. How many
Detroit promoters have been throwing parties that would book Jeff Mills
(consistently) over the last ten years? The same is almost as true of Rob
Hood (who actually lives in Detroit rather than splitting time between
Chicago and Berlin), no? Correct me if I'm wrong, but Lost must be one of the
longest-running parties in the world (if not the longest at almost 14 years)
 that cater to Detroit techno.

Right on T. I say for all it's faults (most of them fairly recent) it
really ought to be recognized that Lost has played a major role in
keeping a segment of 'Detroit' music alive - at least by flying a
flag, but also by actually funding the producers of it with regular
gigs (at I believe sensibly competitive fees). Don't forget Atkins,
 and of course May.

The problem Lost must confront now of course, is that many of us
punters and the generation of DJs we grew up with, are getting on. We
won't be able prop Lost up forever (sooner or later most of us succumb
to the wife/kids syndrome - I said syndrome! ;-). Or at least,
corporate/career life starts to make more and more demands on our
time, or some other type of responsibility does. Nor will the same
thing which kept us up all night necessarily keep doing that for a
crowd which might visit the institution in 5 years time, let alone ten
years time. Obviously, fresh blood and new ideas are becoming
imperative. Till then, I can't say I won't be back there soon because
I know I will. And I'll enjoy it most likely.

Quotes on EEVO2501 Terrace – City Sounds

Funk D’Void
“Thanks for sending me the wonderful Terrace 12! I love the Lab
Practice track, it's beautiful.”

Laurent Garnier
Terrace as good as ever - beautiful music as always - love this”

Tom Churchill – Headspace/Emoticon/Traxx
“Good stuff - not my favourite Eevolute record ever, but it's still
nice. Very well-produced as usual. Will be playing the A1 track out
- nice blend of electronics and Italo/disco styles, very warm...”

Oliver Kapp - Indulge/Raygun
”great release - i like all tracks, esp. the last one on the b-side
(very dark!!)”

Billy Nasty – Tortured/Electrix Records
”Wicked EP with Ital Disco styled bassline and lovely strings.
It’s a really strong 12”.

Anthony Shakir - Frictional Recordings
”It is a welcome return of a veteran. I love to play it out.”
EEVO2501 Reviews

Interstellar Sounds (www.interstellarsounds.com)
“Breathtaking new EP signifying the long overdue return of
Terrace. Stefan Robbers also recorded many releases for Djax-Up-
Beats in the early nineties under various pseudonyms such as Board
of Wisdom, R.E.C., Acid Junkies and Terrace, making Djax one of the
most respected 'intelligent techno', as the style was dubbed at the
time, labels of the day. Robbers then went on to establish his own
label, Eevo-lute, recording under the Florence guise. This EP
demonstrates Robbers' passion for emotive electronica, near-on
outdoing the long-time Detroit masters at their own game in the
process. Truly splendid.”

DJ Magazine (Richard Brophy)
“In the 90s, Stefan Robbers and his Eevolute label typified the
adventurous spirit of European techno as much as fellow Dutchman
Speedy J. Suddenly, Robbers went to ground and, apart from the odd
release, has been strangely silent for the best part of a decade.
‘City Sounds’ might be a comeback record, but it shows that he has
stuck to his trademark sound. The pulsing electro backing of ‘Lab
Practice’ makes nods to current trends, but at the heart of this
record are Robbers’ emotive, uplifting melodies and his brittle,
fractured funk sensibility. 4/5”

Martin Dunst – LittleDetroit.net
“I haven't heard any Terrace since 1991, so this was most welcome
return. This is the first of 4 EP's in the series from different
artist that are somehow related, not that I'm sure how but somehow
it doesn't really matter as it's a pretty fine record all on its
own. It's an odd own to place, influences from Kraftwerk, Donna
Summer, ItaloDisco, Detroit and Dub - they are all here but there's
plenty of space woven in-between these making for something that
has you nodding your head and thinking of distant lands. I wouldn't
go as far as trippy but it's pretty close minus the damp hippy! The
A-Side Lab Practice and Absense seem to capture this best,
crisp drums, driving electro b-lines and cascading strings and 8
bit-riffs - it simply translates as big smiles on the floor or even
in the cans. Looks like I've got a lot of catching up to do!”

Alex Waltz – Groove Magazin
“Stefan Robbers produzierte in der Mitte der Neunziger Jahre als
Florence und besonders als Terrace die besten Detroit-Tracks aus
Europa. Bei ihm scheint sich kaum etwas Wesentliches verändert zu
haben, die neuen Stücke auf seinem eigenen Label Eevolute nehmen
jene Verbindung zwischen Detroitiger Außerweltlichkeit und
Europäischer Floorbezogenheit auf, für die man ihn damals so
liebte. Die Tracks können sich in den

RE: (313) Music I've heard this week

2005-07-19 Thread dave cronin
Since it's a little quiet round here today, here's
what's new my uptempo crate:

Henrik Schwarz - Leave My Head Alone Brain
This cool little groover features some dubby sounds (a
la deepchord), yummy organ, funk bassline and bluesy
soul vox. A variety of mixes range from pretty rootsy
to a bit more tech-house. Would work well the new Dark
Comedy bizness, and is way more dynamic and varied
than some of the more stripped-down Henrik gear.

Domu - Discotech EP
Yeah, yeah, I know I'm always on about Domu. This one
is pretty cool-- he takes his more freestyle/bnb
approach and applies it to house music. The results
are a bit Theo/KDJ, complete with samples all over the
place, off-kilter beats, and satisfying basslines. B2
is a bit different with a bit more of what you expect
from Domu-- nice detroit-ish moody pads, brokenbeats
and some dnb influences.

Kid Sublime - Bassment Works Vol. 4
More lowlands minimal deep house with prominent KDJ
influences. For me the real winner is the Side B.
Totally grrooovy with good builds and changes,
featuring a nice little vocal loop (keep on doing
what I'm doing). I also just picked up Basement Soul,
which is a full-length RB/Soul album-- very nice, but
much more song-oriented.

Spymusic - The Start of Something Big
This 6 track mini album features warm, organic sounds
(electric guitar, electric piano), a smattering of
synth tones and nice beats ranging from house to
downtempo. The overall effect is funky and musical but
with a serious groove.

Joakim - Teenage Kiss
Well-moving vocal number with an acidy punk funk
groove combined with some glitchy sounds. B/W Volga
Select - Transe, which is kind of a proto-techno slash
punk-funk thing that would sound great in a set with
the Black Devil Disco Club records. Would love to hear
this on a proper rig.

Also loving (in the jazz/downtempo crate):

Dwight Tribble The Life Force Trio
Malik Flavors - Ugly Beauty
Ammon Contact - New Birth
Luke Vibert - Lover's Acid

K... Back when MP3.com was actually a good site, I ran across an artist
called Microlife. He had some excellent music and I had his entire
collection of tracks on MP3.com. I was particularly fond of one called M
Path, but lost my entire MP3.com collection to my 2 year old (she broke a
bunch of my CD'). I can't find much of anything on this artist except for
one track on http://www.juno.co.uk/artists/Microlife/.

Anyone have any of the old MP3.com stuff or more info on this artist?

its a disco loop kinda jam but really dirty and nasty.
