I think it's a bit like the Oscars. You have to put it in
perspective. Do the best films get nominated, the finest
actors always? It's a good thing but is not always representative.
Denzil should have won an Oscar years ago...( Though I will
be happy if Heath Ledger gets something for Brokeback
Mountain. ;)) The Grammy's are so off kilter most of the time
it's hard to take some of results seriously but it would be
nice for Juan, though obviously not what he fully deserves...
Most of the dance acknowledged by the Grammys is so wack
(Thunderpuss!) no one outside the US corporate arena could
 take it seriously.

Ultimately it's a nice recognition and nothing more. If it happens,
excellent, but to hope for an equivalent to a life time achievement award is
just silly. Many of the most innovative artists and thinkers have only been
appreciated posthumously or in their dieing days. Not to say we shouldn't
try to lobby for their recognition, but to hope that Juan Atkins will be
recognised as something more than the guy who was sampled in Sir Mix-A-Lot
and Missy Elliot in the major music industry's consciousness is hoping a bit
much IMO. Why don't we try to thwart Clear Channel first, and then hope for
'Clear'. That said, if you are one of the few who can vote, do it!

Oh, and what's up with June Atkinson's comments on this:
http://www.discogs.com/release/162067 Prolly nothing to do with Juan, but
silly none the less.

2006-01-13 Thread max
These Suburban Knight tunes are Yummy (PLANETS!!!), but actually what I feel
UR stuff has been missing recently.
I've personally found the quality of UR material slipping of late, and I am
a die-hard fan and have all but a few of their releases.

One example is the Galaxy 2 Galaxy LP I just listened to on Juno. I was a
disappointed with the new tracks (all 4 of them?), Sounds like a theme tune
to a day time television show said a friend referring to the first track.

Don't get me wrong, I will most probably buy it, I like it, but it's not the
ground breaking stuff I was hoping for.
The first tune would sit happily along side hi tech jazz on that EP, but
that was over a decade ago. All the old tracks on the LP all have a place in
my heart and back when I first heard them they were futuristic and ahead of
their time. They are what put me on the path to listen to more jazz in the
first place. Maybe the newer ones were produced at the same time, but not
released?

Or maybe I'm just spoilt for future jazz these days with the quality coming
out of west London and the whole broken beat scene, as some of those guys
manage to merge techno with jazz that really does sound ahead of its time.

If I'd not heard the older tracks on the LP before, I'm not sure how
impressed I would be of this in 2006. I have a few Jazz Head friends that
are getting into Detroit stuff so it will be interesting to hear their
opinion; someone that can approach Nation 2 Nation or A Moment in Time with
fresh ears.

Then again I'm probably just getting a little too upset about a few extra
tracks on what I suppose is a retrospective album of Galaxy 2 Galaxy work.

And no doubt there is another Codebreaker or Transition just waiting round
the corner that will have me jumping like a Looney again.

ROLL ON INTERSTELLA FUTURTIVES 2!

James Pennington's recordings as the Suburban Knight pioneered the moodier
side of the Motor City with classics like The Art of Stalking and The
Groove. And though he collaborated on the biggest hit to come out of
Detroit, the techno-pop monster Big Fun by Inner City, he later recorded
with subterranean mainstays Underground Resistance. It was through his
connection with another Detroit mainstay, Derrick May, that Pennington began

recording. May had set up his own Transmat Records in 1986, and Suburban
Knight debuted the following year with the third release for the label, The

Groove. He had also been working with Kevin Saunderson, and co-wrote Big
Fun with Saunderson and Art Forrest. After vocals were added by Paris Grey
and the record was released, it became a worldwide hit and virtually defined

early Detroit techno for many foreigners. Though Pennington only released
one more single for Transmat, it was the dark classic The Art of Stalking.

With the rise of Detroit's second wave in the early '90s, Pennington became
a mentor for Mike Banks and the Underground Resistance crew. With UR, he
released the singles Nocturbulous Behavior and Dark Energy.
Finally new production work by Darkprint supremo SUBURBAN KNIGHT (UR -

'TINY TOYS' harks back to SUBURBAN KNIGHT in his DARK ENERGY faze on UR, a

Judging by the clips below, Its going to be a belter!

Just for the record, it's a Technasia DJ set, which I believe = Charles
Siegling (not that that's a bad thing).

Unfortunately this is the same night as To the Bone's first anniversary,
which features Hard Wax/Berghain's Marcel Dettman (in his UK bedut, and who
I'm personally quite excited to see) and (a rare appearance from former list
member) Jonny McIntosh (who is always more than a treat). It should be the
nuts. It's a bit of a shame though because Split (and Retrovert before
merging with Flux to become Split) have been doing excellent parties for the
last 2+ years, and many of us Detroit-loving [313] types haven't made it to
their shows in the last year or so when they were doing them at Turnmills
(which is generally to be avoided). Unfortunately I also missed the last one
at SE1 which had Alex Bond and Kirk Detroitio because I was away.

Now this is a serious conflict, on top of the already-existing conflict with
another one our friend's parties at Medicine bar, where he's had some
serious guests in recent months (although that is also not one the more
favoured venues in terms of staff and mgmt, etc). That said, I have no doubt
about where I'll be, it's just a shame that as things have slowed down some
in the last year or so that we have one weekend of the month when there is
always a conflict, and it conflicts with the one regular night that is most
convenient for us South Londoners and most appealing for many of us to
support (being oft-neglected for spots north of the river).

Anyway... To pre-empt Dave 'I do nothing but SPAM on [313] although I have
loads to offer' Stenton's post to the list, here's the full scoop:

It doesn't feel like it, but we've already been going a year. Those of you
who haven't made it down yet - you should be ashamed of yourselves.

TO THE BONE’s first anniversary is brought to you by two exhaustive record
collections - those of Marcel Dettman and Jonny McIntosh. As well as being a
buyer for one of Europe’s premier record bunkers, Hardwax records, Marcel’s
also resident at one of the filthiest, most disorientating and best clubs in
the world (that Easyjet flies to), Berghain in Berlin - all darkness,
dungeons, d*ldos and cool people. Marcel plays all sorts of housey,
technoey, ravey gear, but the unifying theme behind his musical aesthetic
is, as he puts it, “bears LOVE fisting to it”.

Our other guest is record and degree collector extraordinaire, Jonny “The
Which Doctor” McIntosh BA Bsc MA MPhil PHD. If there’s one thing Jonny likes
more than completing the Prescription back catalogue in triplicate, it’s
collecting esoteric degree certificates (which he then sells to Jeffrey
Archer).
Jonny plays all sorts of housey, technoey, ravey stuff, but the unifying
theme behind his musical aesthetic is, as he puts it, “bears LOVE fisting to
it”.

Resident Djs are Tony Little (the man with the p*nis like a baby’s arm) and
Charlie Blue (the man with the arm like a baby’s

The first saturday of March it's Sendex (Bunker) and Max Duley (Lost)

i consider the world of commercial music and awards nights as one big giant
pile of wombat poop. i sort of thought that on this matter i was vaguely
on the same wavelength as others on this list, underground resistance and
others interested in independent/underground dance music.

the time for techno to get the recognition and dues it deserves was 1989
and it did - millions around the world danced their asses off to detroit
music. thousands had their lives changed and started buying the records,
djing, making the stuff, starting internet boards, wearing UR t-shirts and
making pilgrimages to detroit and putting on underground parties. how namy
people turn up each year for the demf (or whatever it''s called)?

do you think techno or juan is getting their dues when a fake industry
award show mentions his name 20 years after the fact.
an industry that ignores you unless it wants to steal your songs (knights

recognition.

It's about standing up for a friend and mentor, home town, and way
of doing things, it seems to me. And a moment of recognition that
not everything is under the control of the programmers, even at the
heart of their self-congratulatory, corrupt, musically reactionary
mess of an industry.

I'm actually thrilled by this. He has certainly had his ups and
downs, and sure Missy is pop, but the whole point is that this
happened because of techno, and it's about damn time Juan got
some serious cred.
