welcome back bill. you and I met several years ago in some kids living room in ann arbor. it was you, me, two friends of mine, greg davis (i think), and hrvatski :) contact mics and msp. good times. glad you're still in the mix - Original Message - From: Bill Van Loo [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2006 12:39 PM Subject: (313) hello, old friends. Hi there. I was browsing the (313) archives recently, and realized that it might be fun to get back into this conversation after being absent for a few years. I recognized a lot of the names that I saw in the 2006 archives still, which is a good sign (Kent, Matt McQueen, Minto, Tristan, and on and on), so hopefully the ground hasn't shifted beyond recognition. What really sparked my thought of getting back to the list was when I was writing the liner notes for the record of mine that just came out, entitled chromedecay tracks pt2: 2001-2005. I included the (313) list in my thank yous, because it really was such a huge part of my musical development for a number of years, and I thought it fitting to get back to it and see how things are. http://www.chromedecay.org/releases/cd003/ A little catch-up may be in order here. In the last 4 years, I've been actively producing music (some of which is compiled on chromedecay tracks pt2), involved in the Windsor-Detroit collective Thinkbox, became a father a few times over (3 kids now), and became a Christian. All of these have changed my life in many ways, of course, and so I approach things from a perspective that's different from 4 years ago, but hopefully in a new and vibrant way. For those of you who remember me, I'm glad to be back. For those of you who weren't on this list when I left a few years back, I hope to have some good conversations with you. peace, Bill Van Loo -- chromedecay tracks pt2: 2001-2005 now released! http://www.chromedecay.org/releases/cd003/ http://www.chromedecay.org || http://www.billvanloo.com

I should have written 'averse' as well. All this stuff is really helpful. What does everyone think of Mark Passarani? I've just ordered his album. I can really recommend Voom Voom's Peng Peng too - just avoid that weird rock track, all the rest is sublime. I played it last night and enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the album before with the song Love. Wondered what/if the essential Slater tunes for 313 listees would be? I definitely wasn't feeling his last electro project, though I'm not adverse to some of the new pop electro (love Kelley Polar, Goldfrapp, etc) PAS Archives I and II are easy ways to get a lot of good stuff in his later Peacefrog style. There are some gems on the earlier Slater releases on Peacefrog, but pretty scattered in my opinion. His Morganistic album on Input Neuron Musique is my favourite thing he's done, and probably the only thing I'd rate every track on, although that's quite a bit harder to come by. I wound up selling almost all my 7th Plain stuff. I didn't think they held together as albums very well. A few good tracks on them though. For that style I quite liked the Shades Amaze Concept EP, which I kept for 'Bigfield'. Generally I think his biggest downfall is quality control. He'll put two dope tracks on an album and the rest really won't compare. Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I quite like 'Age of Hypocrisy' http://www.discogs.com/release/298990 and 'Tribute' http://www.discogs.com/release/139116 as Analogue Fingerprints. The B-side to 'I'll House U' is good too, although I'm kind of tired of the title track. The Peacefrog album has some nice stuff on it but I was never bothered enough to pick it up. I'm not expert on him by any means though. Some people were going totally mad for all the Final Frontier-related stuff a few years back and I kinda caught on at the tail end of that. I like most of it quite a bit, but didn't feel the need to chase down the entire catalogue or anything. Anyway... much of the other stuff on Pigna is quite similar to his stuff on Final Frontier at the time. Two on Pigna that I picked up then were Raiders Of The Lost ARP's Funk Series Part 2 http://www.discogs.com/release/234724 and Starship 727's 'All Depends On You' http://www.discogs.com/release/361144. I also always wanted to pick up the Raiders of the Lost Arp album, but never got around to it. Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Re: (313) Luke Slater
Very interesting - I interviewed Mr. Slater back in '98 for a radio special feature, and he said then that he was done with 7th Plain. Maybe it was the sour taste from his parting with GPR - just speculation. I hope the new 7th Plain is a return to his old GPR-style material. I haven't paid too much attention after Freek Funk. Thanks to those who mentioned the Morganistic release on Input Neuron - It slipped my mind somehow (senility, I guess). He also did an very different style EP as Morganistic on Irdial that's worth checking out. That one may (or may not) be available as a download from Irdial's web site. For those who like it rough and dirty, the Deputy Dawg EP on Peacefrog is very rough and dirty indeed. I don't play out in clubs or anything and have to be content with a radio gig, but one of these days, Id like to drop Quadphonik in a place with a big sound system. I heard someone play out Leaf off the Morganistic album in a club a few years ago, and that was pretty satisfying... The 7th Plain stuff kinda grew on me. The guy that originally turned me to techno practically shoved 4 Cornered Room into my hand and told me to buy it back in '94. I didn't quite get it at the time, but it finally dawned on me what lovely emotion-laden stuff it was (and still is). Yellow Wise Rug is also a favorite. As a bonus, if you stare at the album cover long enough you see extra stuff (it's one of those hidden 3-D pics). Goodwrench KFJC-FM 89.7 Los Altos Hills, CA www.kfjc.org Tristan said (thanks for the heads up, BTW): Y'all know about Mote Evolver? http://www.mote-evolver.com. It's his newish label/net label. Looks as though the new 7th Plain is out in November. The current release is some vile elctrogash, so my hopes are cautious. I can't see him resurrecting that moniker for nothing though... I don't know the whole story but GPR seems to have been a music industry nightmare for everyone they ever released. Apparently they went tits up with thousands of copies of Black Dog's Temple of Transparent Balls locked in a warehouse somewhere -- probably ground up by now. Beaumont Hannant never seemed to do much after GPR died either...
