(313) Jumble Sale Wild Kingdom

2008-03-13 Thread Richard Hester
Last week's Wild Kingdom playlist is at
http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=29790 . Saturday night/Sunday
morning's set is back to the normal 3 hours, featuring a scattershot of
tunes From Pierrot Premier, Air Liquide, Sutekh, Lexanculpt, Plaid, Leo
Annibaldi, HIA vs. Deep Space Network, OST, YO3, Black Dog, and more.

"The Wild Kingdom" airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday
Morning, 12A-3A (7A-10A GMT). The webcast is at www.kfjc.org (follow the
links). Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived there.
You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show "Just
Desserts" that aired on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived
playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve
1999/2000.

If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to
let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all
over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events.
If you want to do some fairly serious promotion, contact the KFJC
promotions department at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to arrange ticket giveaways
and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks
to those who have sent promo music so far.

RE: Re: (313) Kraftwerk US shows in April

2008-03-13 Thread rg
In autumn 1990 or 91 I was in Prague Czechoslovakia, a random visit as
someone had given me a few days left on a rail pass and I was in
Switzerland. I saw posters in Czech for 'Kraftwerk' in the city, so wrote it
down and on the day headed out with 6 hours to spare. Ended up at the wrong
place, finally got to this 60's modernist cultural center next to a big
river directly off the train, no roads, the station was at the edge of this
complex and I could hear the music, appregiators but can't remember the
song, I think it was the model...it had just started, and there was no one
anywhere, deserted, but with krafwerk echoing through all these concrete
passages and tunnels and chambers. I eventually found the ticket booth and
presented my money and the women there told that I had to have bought a
ticket somewhere else in the city and could only present it at that booth,
or something like that, like it had started and it was seated, I couldn't
work it out...so absolutely no entry...so I listened to a few songs through
this closed auditorium door, as it got dark in this monolithic concrete
civic centre, it was weird...like no audience noise, no rubbish, no
drinks...and then I got fed up and left feeling weird enough as it
was...never forget it though...just so wish I'd run in that door man.

In 2004, I had a ticket to see them at Coachella, and a plane
ticket to San Francisco to go see them at The Warfield.

A week or so before Coachella, I came down with adult Chicken Pox
and had to miss both shows.

Did Akufen actually play the festival? I remember seeing him at an
afterparty, but not at the festival.

Also, Orb, Richard Devine and Photek played, but aren't listed below.

it might be finite, but there is still room for alot of great people
who havent played as well as repeat performances by some of the better
ones.

miss closed out the festival twice, 03 and last year. derrick has
played at least 2 or 3 times that i can think of. that list was not
exactly accurate i guess.

that would be ideal, yes, but i'd bet that what has really happened is
that the overall number of performers has increased, while the detroit
representation has stayed about the same. and, realistically, i think
the problem is that there are just a finite number of people djing and
making music in detroit. hence KMS getting booked a ridiculous five
times. it is a crime, however, that rob hood has only been booked
once. and derrick and jeff have only played once as well.

what we need is the percentages by year to see what the breakdown is
like. my personal favorite year was 03 (i missed the first 3 though)
and that one had to have been like 75% detroit area artists.

WTF on saunderson 5 times, grant and huck deserve to play every year!

the facts:

only 114 (36%) of the 315 individual performers over the last eight
years (perhaps excluding 2001) have been from the detroit area
of the 48 or so who have performed more than once, 38 have been from
detroit (80%)

Kevin Saunderson has played five times, and Mike Grant and Mike
Huckaby have each played four times.

Looks like most of 2001 was omitted; and yet Kenny Larkin is on there
4 times.. did he really play 4 times?

Re: (313) lineups? Re: (313) demf 2008

2008-03-13 Thread Frank Glazer
the facts:

only 114 (36%) of the 315 individual performers over the last eight
years (perhaps excluding 2001) have been from the detroit area
of the 48 or so who have performed more than once, 38 have been from
detroit (80%)

Kevin Saunderson has played five times, and Mike Grant and Mike
Huckaby have each played four times.

actually, you didn't. I know at least Autechre, Kit Clayton, Titonton
and myself played the second year at the underground stage. ;)

Looks like most of 2001 was omitted; and yet Kenny Larkin is on there
4 times.. did he really play 4 times?

note that none of this has to do with the actual festival. the music
quality for the festival keeps going down.

im only laughing at your haircut.

unquestionably this is possible for those of us like the very small
number of people on this list. for other people who dont know about
the extras, they are never going to find out because they can get a
better festival lineup closer to home with more advance preparation.
so what good is that? i like chilling with the heads, but surely it is
better to actually spread the experience around.

of course they are, but the number of people who ARE clear on the
concept is very very small.

In 2004, I had a ticket to see them at Coachella, and a plane
ticket to San Francisco to go see them at The Warfield.

A week or so before Coachella, I came down with adult Chicken Pox

Re: (313) demf 2008

2008-03-13 Thread Greg Earle

So JT, in 2 different posts you're basically admitting that you
didn't go to the festival either last year or the year before?

If so, you've automatically lost your right to bitch about it.

Detroit, to me, is not a festival.

Detroit is a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Detroit is about reuniting with good friends, the vast
majority of whom I have met through this list.

It's about eating in Greektown or Mexicantown.

It's about (313) list BBQs at Dennis Donohue's old place.

Or at Ian & Linda's.

It's about going to Record Time.

It's about cruising around Belle Isle.

It's about going to see what's new at the Heidelberg Project.

It's about peeking in the foyers of those beautiful old Deco
buildings downtown.

And it's about the surreal experiences, the Only In Detroit
moments. Like coming out of Juan's crib at 6:00 AM and thinking,
"F--k, I was just in Juan Atkins' basement." Or being in a gallery
in Eastern Market and seeing couples freaking on the dancefloor.
To Rolando.

Yeah. Let's see you get that kind of experience at

You can always find more good music than you have time to see
(hello, afterparties?) anyways. I spend far more time going
to hear music in Detroit than I do when I'm in, say, Barcelona.
When I hear you all bitch and moan about the festival having
gone to the dogs (er, candy ravers), you just make me laugh.

The bottom line for me is that I am firmly convinced that you
cannot possibly have more fun than you can have in Detroit
over Memorial Day weekend. Paxahau or no Paxahau.

Anyone who makes their decision to go or not go to Detroit
based on the festival lineup is, as my brother would say,
"Unclear on the concept".

Re: (313) Festival rumors

Yep, the only reason why I went to the Fest last year was to see R&S
playing 6 hours of dub bliss in the rain. The sound at that stage was
incredible, i think my internals got re-arranged from the subs.

I won't be there unfortunately since I fly in the day after, but by the sound
of it Inohs Sivad would fit your bill.

Hey Everyone...

I know there's a lot of complaints from people about DEMF never
listening to people about what the people want... so I figured I
should ask the enthusiasts of Detroit music what they would like to
see.

I'm Programming the Campus Martius Park FREE "4th Fridays" Festival
that happens within walking distance from Hart Plaza the day before
DEMF begins, and I'm gearing this event towards a Neo-Soul sound with
DJ appeal.

It's got to be live music, danceable, and able to connect with even
those people who may not understand what Neo-Soul, Detroit House or
Techno might be.

I've got a list of people I'm putting forth already, I'm just really
curious as to what the 313 hyperreal board would want to see.

so just a heads up

we have a whopping 23 "Yay's" for the t-shirt [including those
who want the 1 and /or 2-sided [more like a wraparound shirt]

http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapF.pdf
http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapB.pdf

My minimum order was going to be at least 100 so I hope a few of
you other hundred [or least 77] lurkers rise to the occasion.
If that's it then I may be forced to get into the business of
offering the shirts at a standard rate for $15-20 each.

On a side note;

04 April 2008 - I'm DJing with Todd Osborn & Brian Gillespie for
return of FAMILY at OSLO [1486 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48226].

07 April 2008 - I'm doing a production discussion at SUBMERGE for
Red Bull Music Academy in Detroit. I'll be going over the changes
in production methods over the years, scratching the surface on my
techniques with Logic, Live, and incorporating it with the right
hardware tools.

Let me know if you're in attending and I can forward you the
information about signing up.

(313) Festival rumors

2008-03-13 Thread tevans1111
This is such a hateraid list, who didn't have a great time last year? The
sound was great, 6 hrs of R&S, a great kicking dancefloor in the detroit tent.
I would much rather hear real detroit music in a tent than on the main stage,
where people are stuck in some spectacle of watching a performer, more than
actually getting down.
I got one tiny rumor, DBX live. if this is true that pretty much makes it all
worth it. I am still sort of keeping my fingers crossed for someone like jay
denham or t1000 or rob hood. But I will more likely get claude von stroke or

(313) t-shirt update + upcoming dates in Detroit

2008-03-13 Thread Todd Sines

so just a heads up

we have a whopping 23 "Yay's" for the t-shirt [including those who
want the 1 and /or 2-sided [more like a wraparound shirt]

http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_1sided.pdf
http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapF.pdf
http://www.scale.gs/client/313/313_shirts02_maps_wrapB.pdf

My minimum order was going to be at least 100 so I hope a few of you
other hundred [or least 77] lurkers rise to the occasion.
If that's it then I may be forced to get into the business of
offering the shirts at a standard rate for $15-20 each.

On a side note;

04 April 2008 - I'm DJing with Todd Osborn & Brian Gillespie for
return of FAMILY at OSLO [1486 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48226].

07 April 2008 - I'm doing a production discussion at SUBMERGE for Red
Bull Music Academy in Detroit. I'll be going over the changes in
production methods over the years, scratching the surface on my
techniques with Logic, Live, and incorporating it with the right
hardware tools.

Let me know if you're in attending and I can forward you the
information about signing up.

(amended for the filters)

yes, please play it safe

there does seem to be some kind of Kraftwerk Kurse for some people

I had a friend who tried time and again to see them
once he got into an accident, another time something else happened and he
couldn't make it (but he had the ticket)
last time was at the last Chicago show
we all got there, he got into the theatre, went to the bar, and some drunk
guy punched him in the face!
knocked him senseless and fnucked up his vision for the night

he spent the rest of the show across the street in some other bar that was
playing Kraftwerk CDs all night

2008-03-13 Thread jwan allen
All excellent points, there have been questionable performers since
the first year (I've attended every festival to date), but since the
first year it's always been about events around the festival where the
real pay-off has been for me. Record shopping, after parties (provided
they don't get shut down) and hanging out in the city that started it
all.

The Pittsburgh crew refers to the festival as the "techno spring
break" and we enjoy are annual trips so much, that we'll continue to
visit the city over that weekend, even if no festival is scheduled.
With the being said the delay in announcing even a partial line-up is
a bad marketing move. Perhaps they are counting on the low dollar to
entice international visitors. But if I was in charge, I wouldn't bank
on the scenario, as I know for a fact that hotel rooms are already at
a premium, since there are many ppl like us who book their rooms
months in advance.

Kraftwerk have done "mini-tours" before, when showcasing or testing a new live
set up. They usually do 1-3 gigs before 1 larger one, which in this instance is
Coachella.

Not sure if this does mean a new live "performance" including set-up and songs,
but it's a distinct possibility.

press releases highlighting stuff isnt going to draw the international
crowd when they have better overall choices out there for festivals to
attend. they can try window dressing all they want, people are not
stupid. any detroit emphasis they try to give off is a joke.

no joke acts as bad as the drum and bass jokers last year and in 06,
or Booka Shade last year. there were other specific lowlights, but 06
featured large chunks of the day where i couldnt find anyone playing
any good music at all and last year featured some of the worst crap
ive heard coming out of the speakers in the years i have done. i dont
care about some ravers coming, that doesnt bother me. but when it is
all ravers and no international crowd and very few "normal" locals,
you have lost the entire flavor of what the festival was about.

improve gradually? at the rate they are improving now, the festival
will be completely worthless in a year or two. i love the better
organization and the good sound systems, but some of the artists over
the past 2 years have been a gigantic joke. maybe you want to go back

i sound negative because i am negative. they could get many more
worldwide visitors for this event by having the lineup out already.
they just dont care to, they want to get the local rave population.
how else am i supposed to feel about that? i dont want the detroit
ibiza connection, that is absolutely worthless.

on that note, putting the festival line up to one side - has there been
any news of good afterparties happening yet? other than the Soul Skate
one...

(313) Kraftwerk US shows in April

2008-03-13 Thread Toby Frith

19 Minneapolis, MN - Myth
20 Milwaukee, WI - Eagles Ballroom
23 Denver, CO - The Fillmore
26 Indio, CA - Coachella Music Festival

I think we might see something new from Kraftwerk on these shows - they're
similar to their mini-tours of 1990 and 2002 when they showcased a new set up
on each occasion.

Yeah, but you know we don't actually feel that way right, because
every message (except maybe Tmo's) has sad something like "I'll be
there anyway", or what I have said, "..I'm glad they are managing the
festival competently, unlike previous incarnations, so that it can
continue and perhaps find it's own identity and mojo again."

To take the rose-colored glasses off, for me, the last year was so
unappealing that I didn't much consider going, so yes, I hope it
improves because if that continues I really will be indifferent about
whether it happens anymore or not. They can't please everybody all the
time and I may be a casualty. For the $500+ the trip costs me, I could
go somewhere else, Europe even, and have a better time. Detroit will
survive, the music will survive. We'll see...I have high hopes for
this year. I have a feeling they'll ask Convextion to play at least,
and I'd go even if just to support him..but we'll see..
