(313) Wild kingdom on KFJC
Last week's Wild Kingdom was in honor up Yuri's Night, featuring tracks about space and such. The playlist is at http://www.kfjc.org/music/playlist.php?i=30029 . There was a big Yuri's night do at a nearby NASA research center/air base, with over 8,000 folks in attendance - some party. This week's set is back to the usual mishmash, with cameos from Kenny Larkin, Eon, Kerosene, Speedy J, Khan Walker, AFX, LFO, Aural Expansion, and a huge supporting cast. I'm also breaking in a new trainee, so don't be surprised at a new voice on mic. Check the event calendar at KFJC for upcoming specials during the month of May. I'm doing a special on bands/tracks with synth names (remember?), and a 3-part Acid special. The Wild Kingdom airs on KFJC-FM 89.7, Saturday night/Sunday Morning, 12A-3A (7A-10A GMT). The webcast is at www.kfjc.org (follow the links). Present and past Wild Kingdom playlists are also archived there. You can also check out archived playlists from my first KFJC show Just Desserts that aired on Fridays 10P-2A from 1992 through 1999. Archived playlists exist for that show starting from Fall 1995 to New Year's Eve 1999/2000. If you do tune in (especially via the web), please take a little time to let me know your locale. I'm also interested in promo music from all over and in promoting local (San Francisco Bay area) techno-type events. If you want to do some fairly serious promotion, contact the KFJC promotions department at to arrange ticket giveaways and/or to send information for inclusion in our concert outlook. Thanks to those who have sent promo music so far. Regards, Richard Hester Mr. Goodwrench The Wild Kingdom SU 12A-3A KFJC-FM 89.7, Los Altos Hills, California
Re: (313) Porter Ricks Biokinetics CD
I've modified my metal boxes (after my M CD cracked in half) by sticking the plastic from a normal jewlcase inside. After my M CD cracked, I wrote an email to Hardwax, that they should do something about the desing, and they sent me a new copy for free :) Jernej www.octex.si theREALmxyzptlk wrote: That could well be the case, but I burned cdrs from my copies right after I got them and played those, especially when traveling. When I heard people had cracked discs, I checked my own and three of them were cracked. None of them were even opened more than a few times. Chain Reaction figured it out and moved to the uglier 'soft covers' eventually. And I can't find a few of the CDs I have sitting in stacks of slimlines. The notion of a CD banging around on bare metal as packaging always seemed just this side of the legendary Durutti Column LP that used sandpaper for the jacket. Interesting aesthetically, but a tad shy on the function meter (unless you hate Vini Reilly) jeff Not that it's either here nor there, but I don't think that at normal temps, the difference between the expansion rate of stamp metal and whatever plastic they make CDs from differs that much. I think it's as much the fact that a plastic CD case's spindle-holder is made of plastic that bows in when you push on the CD, then pops back out so that a little lip on each tine of the spindle-thingie keeps the CD in place. There is little or no outward force on the hole in the CD.

FE is fine if what you want is in stock. Speaking as someone who'd like to keep on *current* things domestic and abroad musically, it's not so hot. It won't do to wait on them to get in much of anything that's limited, and it's a crap shoot waiting to see if they'll get the records in which create a buzz here. Usually it's a losing bet. On the other hand, they'll often roll out a huge back-catalogue of a label which wasn't that hot last year. It depends on what you want. They are efficient and fast if you specify you want backorders skipped and shipping asap, but as far as keeping *consistently* current on things (save mostly the 'trendy' ends of techno, the Soul Jazz catalogue, and the odd gem here and there) - and especially as Tom mentioned, the Detroity stuff - you're better off elsewhere. Re: (313) Online ecord stores
i should mention that turntable lab often has a lot of obscure represses and hipster disco, and of course they have almost all dfa releases. I have mentioned here before (but still haven't yet got it out of my system!) that I was shafted by TTL twice in a row so stopped ordering from them and would warn others against doing so. The most recent incident involved them claiming my package was returned to them by the US postal service because it posed a security threat (I live in New Zealand, second only to Norway on the Global Peace Index - http://www.visionofhumanity.com/rankings/). TTL decided this was somehow all my fault despite the package having got no further than their local post office, so informed me that if I wanted my records I had to pay for the postage again!! But of course they couldn't guarantee the same wouldn't happen a second time. And they wouldn't refund the postage after I told them to keep the damned things. Interestingly, this all came to pass after I enquired why, according to my account status on their website, the records hadn't been shipped several weeks after I ordered them. They refused to give me any evidence of shipment so I could take it up with the shipping company instead. In fact, they refused to acknowledge any of my emails for a period of months until I gave up and had my credit card take action to reverse the charges. I had a sneaking suspicion the whole time that they had simply forgotten to process my order and were trying to cover up with some bullsh*t story when I asked them about it. In that case a simple apology would have been more suitable. Ironically, I was trying to use a credit note from my previous order which was also problematic. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend those fools. It seems their quality control went out the window when they went big time with the second LA warehouse. [/rant] Andy
Re: (313) Online ecord stores
turntablelab has a nice selection in terms of hip-hop and represses. But their shipping is too expensive. Only thru UPS. And that carries a problem when it comes to custom taxes in Brazil. Courier companies always pay the taxes, ordinary mail, sometimes, pass thru the filter with no taxes at all. I JUST reloaded this CD into my MP3 player after having gone at least 4 years without listening to it. -Original Message- From: kent williams [mailto: Sent: Friday, April 18, 2008 8:35 AM To: list 313 Subject: (313) Porter Ricks Biokinetics CD I just pulled the metal can down off my shelf to rip it, and my copy has a nasty circular scratch in it, and the fricken CD is actually cracked from the center outwards about an inch. Maybe I should send the CD and the frickin metal can case back to Hardwax and ask for another. On the other hand, the silver paint is coming off my Porter Ricks can and it's starting to rust. I was going to ask if anyone had mp3s but miraculously it seems to be ripping OK If you haven't destroyed your Chain Reactions CDs yet -- take them out of the cans and put them in a less brutal sleeve! -- No virus found in this incoming message.
