You do get a glimpse of Minx, briefly. Not that she doesn't deserve recognition, but in terms of the video as a whole she's the person featured least likely to be a draw for the Moby fans. Paxahau are trying to run this as a going concern, and when your concern is how many bracelets you sell, you are going to try and feature people who might have some appeal beyond the rabid techno fans, like the people on this mailing list. And in case you haven't noticed, as a cohort, 313 listers are aging out of the festival-going age group. What percentage of people under 25 even know what an E-Mail list is? We are not the people for whom Paxahau is working so hard to make a festival. We could have a perfect DEMF for the 313 list, but there's only 442 of us (I just counted), and even if we could count on the general awesomeness of any festival WE curated drawing 20 times that many people, it wouldn't begin to pay for itself. Plus even if the lineup was generated by the 313 list, there'd still be all sorts of hating going on about it. If you're going to the festival, look at the afterparties, too. Maybe it's just me but there are more opportunities to see really fantastic lineups for dirt cheap than ever before. And you can see Omar-S during the day at a rooftop party! Well said Kent. I'm really excited about a lot of the afterparties. And even though there is a lot of silliness booked for the festival every year, there are a lot of great musicians that I can't wait to see perform. The fact that Al Ester and Stacey Hale are spinning, even though they are not producers, is pretty cool. They have been taking care of Detroit's electronic music scene for decades. Minx is playing the main stage - in the afternoon - but it's the main stage! All the Submerge people playing, I'll be excited to see them too. And the electrobounce/Starski Clutch business should be great as usual. Obviously that promo video is not meant for us or for most Detroiters. Paxahau is trying to keep this festival going, and even though they are not putting on a Detroit music festival and they don't do a good job in getting Detroit residents to attend, particularly young people, this festival is still happening here and I think that's a good thing. It would be so fabulous if it really was a festival that was about Detroit music and that drew a larger local and African American crowd. I would love to know if the festival planners actually have conversations about these issues when they plan the festival. I wonder if they debate whether or not to extend a discount or free entry to Detroit residents. I wonder if they really think Moby is the shit. I wonder if they really are big fans of Benny Benassi. I think it's way more complicated than just Paxahau is racist or they are just a bunch of guys from the suburbs who don't care about Detroit. It's not a big secret that the daytime main stage slots are actually the booby prizes of the festival. It can be rainy, or hot, or both, and the crowd seems to not be much into it until the sun starts going down. I wonder if they really think Moby is the shit. I wonder if they really are big fans of Benny Benassi. I think when you promote shows for a living your standards are a little different. You want to make money -- not just greed at work, but also the 'pinball' part of the job -- if you win you get to keep playing. You want to work with people who are professional, and not a pain in the ass. Benny and Rich are successful professionals who are guaranteed draws. And whatever you might think about their music, or whether they should be headlining at DEMF, it's clear to me that they both were thrilled to be there. You might think they're soulless hacks, but they're not dumb and they know what Detroit means to dance music. In a sense, Moby and Benny need Detroit a hell of a lot more than Detroit needs them. I think it's way more complicated than just Paxahau is racist or they are just a bunch of guys from the suburbs who don't care about Detroit. While I might quibble with some of Paxahau's decisions artistically, I think it's grossly unfair to talk sh1t about their motivations. Paxahau would be just fine without the festival -- in fact financially, they might actually be better off not doing it. Paxahau does the festival because they want the festival to continue, because they believe in it's importance to Detroit, and because doing a festival of this scale successfully is a huge accomplishment.
Re: (313) who is going to the festival??? Re: (313) festival roll call? anybody making t-shirts?
Me again... :) I don't think the Paxahau folks are a bunch of racists or don't care about Detroit. But that is often the general consensus by many critics. I am really interested in their motivations and personal histories with Detroit. I've interviewed one of the Paxahau DJs and we talked a bit about this. Trying to interview Jason Huvare, but that probably won't happen until after the festival. I think it's way more complicated than just Paxahau is racist or they are just a bunch of guys from the suburbs who don't care about Detroit. I'd worry a lot more about that if I thought the stuff we prattle on about here had any real influence. And it seems to be a sort of any press is good press statement, which I don't really think is necessarily true. Reading about R*ch*e or M*by on 313 list wouldn't likely make anyone go out and buy their music. I can't help but feel like you guys are directing these comments at me because I know you both read my blog. I just wanted to point out two things 1) I asked the question IS Paxahau racist?, I didn't claim that they were, necessarily. I am really really glad that the festival is still going on, and Paxahau is doing a great job. 2) The dramatic change in the percentage of black performers to white performers between 05 and 06 is a fact. Whether or not that was a conscious decision on Paxahau's part is clearly unknown. But the facts are the facts, the festival got a lot whiter when white people were given control of it. And I think that's a shame, and I don't see what's wrong with pointing it out. -- Denise Dalphond Ph.D. Candidate Department of Folklore Ethnomusicology Indiana University http://denisedjsdetroit.blogspot.com/ -- peace, frank dj mix archive: http://www.deejaycountzero.com

Ok, I don't think I have EVER written this much to this list. Frank, I think that the data that you put together and your analysis of it all is really important. Yes, you put the words Paxahau and racist together, but I have also heard a lot from local DJs and producers in interviews I have been doing over the past year and five months here. Some are critical, some are not, some are on the fence. So right now, that's where I'm coming from. And...Carol Marvin is white :) But I read ya loud and clear! Alright now, goodnight! Re: (313) who is going to the festival??? Re: (313) festival roll call? anybody making t-shirts?
Carole Marvin being white, actually, was neither here nor there. That's a whole long crazy story, which you've probably heard most of. It started out the first year she was content to have Carl be Artistic director, and she was content to leverage her experience with the Jazz Festival to help put something together on the Plaza. At some point, though, she kind of lost the plot, and fired Craig, I guess because she felt like the festival was 'hers.' Unfortunately she'd fired a massively popular figure locally and internationally, and came off looking pretty Lady Macbeth. She put on the festival in 2002 with a group of people who traditionally did not get along with the 'Detroit Inner Circle' so well, and ... well I'm sure you can read up on it. She still owns the trademark on DEMF as far as I know. I feel kind of sorry for her because she went from hero to villain in Detroit, and I don't know if she ever quite figured out why. You should try and talk to Alan Oldham some time. He lives in Chicago now. Whatever you hear in Detroit he's the contrarian. He's a great guy, but whatever someone else in Detroit tells you is white, he'll tell you it's black.
